i think how most instances of this are mapped fine for other reasons, but mercury's 5 note 1/4 stream is not ok

whatever speed I listen in, I hear one drum per 1/4 tick, 5 total (white tick to white tick). I don't understand how it's 1/3, where there would only be 4 drums total, one per 1/3 tick.

it's more likely to be 1/12 so I think the simplification to 1/4 is ok.
