Wait so does an elephant also count as a furry?
I can think on two ways, it's up to you:
1. Choose the animal which is close to you in real life (personality, symbolic meaning, your "totem" animal if you have one, etc.)
2. Imagine your fursona your ideal apparence and choose what you prefer
If you hesitate between different species you can make an hybrid

still, I didn’t get a clear idea of my oc till around 2-3 years when I get to know this fandom, and it took another 2.5-3 years to finalise my oc. before that I use characters from open IP as pfp (and I still do it now), so it’s perfectly fine to take time in deciding your oc
idea wise my oc is tigon with some magical fey/elven blood in it. I took some references from dungeons & dragons universe. dnd could be quite resourceful when you want some fantasy with logics stuff
