I always imagined humanity would go up to space and become something akin to Star Trek. A space punk future always seemed to be the most likely to me. If not that, then become enveloped to the brim with AI machine tech and have androids walking about everywhere in a cyberpunk future. If still not that then be full of genetically engineered exotic beings in a biopunk future. Yet now that I see what the world has become in the 23th century, I kinda feel like it pulled a fast one on me.

It wasn't an apocalyptic future of any kind. Yea there was a world war, but humanity bounced back from that like it was nothing. The technology is indeed very advanced compared to the familiar 21st century standards. I feel like a complete boomer trying to interact with it. My brain is simply not developed for interfacing with such things compared to kids born in this age. It's like how a child naturally interacts with a tablet compared to their grandma.

Let me set the scene. There is this brain implant tech that reached mass adoption a century back like the PC did during my time. It allowed people to control the equivalent of IoT (internet of things) using their brain. Screens in their minds, lights turn on by thought kind of thing. Enter a company, let's call it Brainmatter Inc. Brainmatter was one of those hype tech companies that had no concept of a brake pedal. Its vision was to use this brain tech to let people shape the world around them. So they made nanomachine particles that can form bonds and shape into anything. Like, uh, those nanobots from Big Hero 6.

That was just the prototype. It was those nanomachines at first, but then they shrunk it down real small. Like how does this not break the laws of physics kind small. Existing that small made it not even normal matter, but some kind of sub particle. It was not hazardous. It did not take over the world with a mind of its own. Yet it replicated and spread and infected the fabric of space itself. I don't understand what it is and I gave up trying. All I do know is that it allows people to do magic using the brain tech.

Yes, this world is literally full of mages. People pull things from what is basically a hammerspace. I've seen people literally firebending on the streets. One guy had some kind of holographic boombox floating next to him in the air blasting music. It was also quite weird seeing there being no physical stores at all. It makes sense since people can make anything, but it's not like an average person knows how to make all the things they want to make. So they go online and buy scripts that make those items. Basically DLCs.

By the way that Brainmatter company did not have a happy ending. Everyone in it was found guilty of gross negligence by unilaterally introducing this element. I think what they did is pretty cool, but it did also make many people do crazy things and governments declare state of emergencies when it happened. The world eventually adapted learning to deal with everyone being a mage and whatnot. In all essence, it's like the real world got transported into VR. I think I will call this VRpunk.
