[added] [Proposal - osu! Standard] Including Slider Tracks in kiai luminosity guideline

While reading the combo colouring part of the ranking criteria I noticed that currently:

''Avoid using combo colours with ~220 luminosity or higher during kiai times. They create bright pulses which can be unpleasant to the eyes.''

It is worded like so.

Now while changing slider track colouring isn't something that is seen often it is still a feature that mappers use from time to time and considering slider tracks also flash creating bright pulses during kiai times I feel like it would be a nice thing to specify as well that using a slider track colour with ~220 luminosity or higher also shouldn't be okay.

Since mappers can change slider tracks that don't match combo colours they used in the editor itself.

The reason why I decided to write this was because slider tracks are bigger than slider heads/tails which means that during kiai times most of the flashing comes from the slider track as you can see in the example below:

(thank you M a r v o l l o)

My suggestion is for this part of the guideline to be rewritten into something like:

''Avoid using combo colours and custom slider track colours with ~220 luminosity or higher during kiai times. They create bright pulses which can be unpleasant to the eyes.''

While not being a huge change in wording I do feel like it's a necessary thing to include.

To give an example for people not familiar with the terms or the feature:

Taken from this map

these are the combo colors in the osu! editor that the map uses, this is all fine.

but you can notice that the slider track (road/path of the slider or well the slider itself) is light grey color along with the border being pinkish color.

This is a feature in which you have to go in osu notepad to change:

and these colors work just as the ones in editor meaning you can put any value you can in the editor itself.

i guess the usage won't be too high but yea seems like a sensible extension to the guideline
The Fart Lord
Makes sense, agreed
Malphs
agree, makes sense to apply the same guideline for tracks.
Cris-
yeah, seems like a valid extension to that guideline
Daycore
i'd say that 200 lum would work better, but i still agree

I've played maps with high track lumi and it was pretty unbearable to play especially kiai for example
Visionary
agree, i see no reason for these to be excluded when they’re often more prominent than the hitcircles themselves
frozz
well slider body color kinda dumb anyways, especially when i always enable beatmap skin
but including that on guidelines won't hurt i guess

it also good for player who might suffer from epilepsy thingy

sounds reasonable
yukic
agree thanks stompy
Stixy
sounds fair
kanpakyin
it's a legit extension to current guideline so why not?

yeah seems fair, the slider body color is dumb anyways might as well make it more bearable (I was paid to say this)

While I don't change slider body colours for my maps personally, I think it makes sense, it also makes the rule clearer so why not

I'm glad people seem to take this change positively.

Thank you all for providing your opinions!

Hmmm may need to look at if it's best as a 1:1 same rule for both or a seperate item, because due to slider body shading the in game luminosity is always a bit darker for slider bodies than it would say for the color. Ex. A color measured as 230 may be more like 220 or 210 in game on the slider body.

If seperate, would need to get an idea of the acceptable upper limit by measuring how different the color vs. In game brightest values are

Just a question of if it's worth worrying about or not

Generally good idea and reasonable to add. Probably simplest to just do the 1:1 factor since they're rare enough already

Sure thing! Thank you

seems legit

fair enough

I'm probably late to the party but I agree with everything that has been mentioned^^

to add to noffy's point: imo the rule should be 1:1 same not neccessarily over 200 luminosity

as mentioned in the thread slider tracks mess with the actual sliders more than color is + kiai flashes are a thing
