I like your choice, seems more comfortable and "ergonomic".
I play 4K only and I play it with the arrow keys.
My S key doesn't really work in LNs

personally I don't mind the defaults either, its just I like the space between my handsiZaIxSP wrote:

Though for me its the default: D F J K, sane defaults are always my go-to
For 5k (since I ocasionally play CloneHero) just add another at the end: D F J K L, using spacebar for the center key just makes no sense to me, since both my thumbs rest on the spacebar and the playfield shows the middle note like the rest (albeit with a distinct color) and makes it confusing.
for a azerty keyboard and a 7k player, my key setup is : AZE Space IOP

I do QWOP (And ZX./ sometimes) for 4k.
<y12 with qwertz layout (only 4k since I cant play other keymodes)
QW [] / QWE SpaceBar P[] - my standard keybind the rest has a similar pattern besides 6k because no space bar
SDF SpaceBar JKL - secondary that gives me more stamina and more kps
458+ - When I play on my keypad
456 Enter +-Backspace - also another keybind for my keypad that I sometimes use for maps below 3* because I can't press more than 5 keys with it
