Asobi Asobase

While I didn't think it was bad, like, there weren't any things I believed were genuine problems like with the last anime, I for sure didn't like it.

Asobi Asobase is a comedy anime following three high school students, each one with a very marked personalities, pretty standard stuff. The main difference of this anime with other of the same genres, and the reason why I disliked this anime, is the type of comedy they employ.

Asobi Asobase mainly employs gross humour, pee and poop jokes, extremely non-moe faces, the teacher being a weird pervert with unusual fetishes, etc. You're meant to be repulsed by it which leads to comedy. While this is a comedy style that is fairly common (not so much in anime tho, I do remember seeing it a lot in western cartoons and some comedy movies), it's not a style I really enjoy

the actual animation was nice tho, I think it has a very unique visual style, using very bright colors, and feeling a lot like a drawing, but like a drawing you did in a a highschool notebook that you've not opened for a year so it has like very white spots where it feels nothing is drawn there, I like that

so yeah, nothing against this anime, I just don't fuck with it's comedy style. D rank.

-----------

Do it yourself

slice of life CGDCT anime about girls doing DIY stuff (i'm actually surprised english doesn't have a better word for this rather than DIY like how the fuck DIY feels like a modern term right you did not have a word to really encompass that field of activities better?????? like we say bricolaje in spanish). The girls are moe and watching the anime is relaxing.

i've seen this anime a while ago now and honestly there isn't really much I want to say, I like the animation style, it's often very polygonal, lot of straight lines across this anime, not the first time i've seen it but I enjoy it so it's always a welcome thing. I think character design is unique and very distinctive, often having a very particular, less common but still common and societal acceptable clothing item. Also, I found I have a soft spot for characters with bandaids, which is honestly such a bizarre fashion decision but honestly whoever invented that and realized that work is a fucking genious that shit is so cute

unlike most CGDCT anime this does kind of have an end goal, which is to build a treehouse. Not very common for CGDCT anime to have a solid endpoint, but I think it works really well, the actual anime up to that is just kind of a bit of very light drama of recruiting club members and learning the skills needed, the treehouse working as a sueprproject that is the climax of what they have accomplished across the anime

it's good, I enjoyed it and I recommend it. A rank. Will update the actual tier list tomorrow if I remember because today I am tired and will be going directly to bed, good night

or as an alternative vivid/stasis ? don't worry about locked chapters, they're too easy to access if you mess with the accessibility settings to get more points. but i just want someone to hear out how uninteresting the story and arg is at least to me. i can't understand shit lmao

didn't play the DLC because it wasn't available on a language I could understand

short horror/toxic yaoi game with a point and click adventure gameplay loop. The game doesn't do anything that is that new or that shocking, everything it does i've seen it before, however, that doesn't make the game bad by any means, if anything, I tihnk it's a really polished game, lot's of small detail that I really enjoyed.

I think the story is tight, the paranormal/horror feel is a good way to tie into the psychological story they were trying to tell, the dialogue is well written and I really appreciate placing stopping points in some of the sentences so the text would take a few fractions of a second longer to scroll from that point giving part of the dialogue more emphasis. Some set scenes, like the optional mirror scenes, while nothing revolutionary (been a tried and tested thing in indie games since undertale did the "despite everything, it's still you", tho, omori REALLY popularized this set piece, having a mirror that after a specific point of the game had a small % chance of jumpscaring you which is honestly so sick because not everyone will see that scare), I think the mirror scene really serves a purpouse and is well done, it's not copying for the sake of copying, not because they liked the visuals and the feel and tried to emulate it without understanding the actual depth of it, the dev clearly understood what they were doing and they told their story in a really effective manner

now, the actual story, i'm more conflicted on. It's again, something I know a lot of people enjoy but something that I never quite understood the appeal. As I said on the beginning, this is a toxic yaoi game, there are two main characters, and there is a lot of romantic subtext between them which is basically confiremd on one of the endings. Spoiler warning, tho I think you may figure out reading reviews and the synopsis and screenshots of the game. turns out, your coworker is mentally derranged, essentially a yandere. And this is the part that I have conflicted feelings on. While this is a horror game, a lot of the scenes feel like they're meant to be arousing,

Again, not a new concept, yanderes have existed since forever, and some people have always been lusting over them, but recently it became more popular. This popularity surge I feel actually came from outside that otaku internet space, but instead, with the popularization of dark romance novels. This type of novel are mainly books targetted torwards women, which follow a female protagonist whose life somehow get intermingled with a male who is usually in some sort of position of power torwards her, for example a common trope is a mafia boss that kidnapped the protagonist. After that a relationship starts to form. These relationships are unethical, toxic, horrible to be in IRL, often consisting of coaxing or rape, but you know, fantasies like that are something that a lot of people find erotic.

This also happened in online LGBTQ+ spaces with toxic yuri and toxic yaoi, which are very similar, just very, as the name implies, toxic relationships, that would be hell to be in IRL, but are arousing.

The problem is that in the current era, sexuality is very much a taboo subject, it's considered a more valid reason to say "I enjoy this game for the story" rather than "I find this game to be very arousing", which I feel taints a bit of internet discussion, like, I'm sorry but you're NOT playing nikke for the story. Not saying that these people are lying, it's very easy to gaslight yourself to believe other elements of the game are peak just becuase you at a personal level don't want to admit it's arousing.

All of this IMO kinda muddies the message of the game, it's not explicitely erotic, but instead all covered in subtext and mashed in with what would be a typically artsy videogame. I've completed the game but I honestly struggle to find a takeaway from it. In normal videogame logic, the ending that is hardest to get is the true ending, and in this case, the true ending would be the one where you decide to stay with your newly found mentally insane dominant boyfriend. I didn't get that ending, and while I enjoyed going through the motions of the game, some cscenes got me to really feel stuff, I don't know if the story really meant anything to me.

It's a very well done game, undeniably so, I just don't know if this is exactly for me, C rank.

Next: vivid stasis

reading it, what you have is just personality data, not something I can talk that much by itself. It's like worldbuilding, sure, it's a fun activity a large ammount of people seem to do, not writing a story, just pure worldbuilding, but at the same time, worldbuilding is only good or bad depending on the story it's placed in, a nonsensical world can be good in certain context, as well as a hyper realistic one

with personality data is the same thing, tho even more extreme. People can be any sort of way, writing a personality that is frankly impossible for anyone on earth to have seems way harder than the opposite, and even then, that may serve to a bigger purpouse if you write a story involving those characters. Your character is neither well written nor bad written, since charcters by themselves, devoid of context, can't be inherently well written or bad written.

Vivid/Stasis (Dropped)

I didn't drop it because it didn't qualify the thread, it completely did, I just was having no fun with it.

Vivid/Stasis is a 4k rhythm game / visual novel with ARG style puzzles. Every element on itself seems to work, but in conjunction is just a total mess. The rhythm game segment were pretty solid, the engine was good tho I had a frame drop once, but it may have been my pc, the songs are cool tho not peak, and the charting was ok. They introduce a new mechanic called bumpers that works as a note that can be hit by pressing any key on the corresponding hand, imagine sound voltex that has those big orange notes but they're pressed by pressing either one of the two left or two right ones.

I don't think they really utilize bumpers that well from what i've played. They mainly work as a reading challenge but I think they don't pull it off in a way that feels satisfactory, from what i've played in rhythm games, there is a certain beauty to a good reading challenge, it's very satisfactory, but with vivid stasis all the charts feels very messy, sometimes you missread but you're able to singletap fast enough to where it doens't actually punish you but totally messed with the flow and feel of the play.

I will applaud that the default keybinds where pretty good, they clearly played etterna/osu, this may seem like a weird thing to point out but god so many games have included 4k segments that are controlled by arrow keys and they're just the worst to play, this actually has sdjk keybinds. The only other narrative game i've seen have good keybinds is "until then"

Now, the rhythm game elements are story elements are quite separate, you play songs to get points to unlock visual novel segments, I don't like this system. The harder the song is the more points you get, this sounds logical in paper, but I think it's a bad call. I have some experience in 4k games, i'm not exactly competitive at them, but i'm for sure better than someone who is new at it, so when I opened the game and saw I had to unlock the story, I played a "course", which is basically a dan course, I think it was level 11 or 12 and I got two S ranks and two AA, that gave me enough points to clear the ENTIRE story for that chapter.

This is a system that benefits players who are already familiar with the genre and punishes one that doesn't, which is the problem, because people who are not rhythm game fans are probably playin because of the story, while the ones that are good for the rhythm game segment, so why are you gifting the rhythm game players the story and making the story players beg for it?

Worst part was when I finished reading up to the end of the chapter, that had a ARG puzzle, I will talk a bit more about it later, but the point is, it asked me to get 500+ combo on 5 songs of the difficulty I was aiming at to unlock it, OR I could solve the puzzle already, but I would be playing the boss song at the lowest difficulty, making it less hype.

So, after I binge read the story, at the very climax of it, you say "go grind 5 random songs, whichever you want, then come back here"!, what a way to kill the momentum jesus chirst

the actual 500+ combo requirement was also pretty insane, again, I was playing on "finale" difficulty that were songs between 10 and 13 of difficulty, getting S and AA and I was not getting 500 combo, I had to play on a lower difficulty and that just made it a whole less exciting

the actual story felt very gimmicky, you are directly thrown into a mistery surrounding one character, but we've really hadn't have much character developement, so it felt hard to care, instead, the story was aiming for this ARG type mistery stuff?, like the characters find a creepy arg-ish video and they go exploring but bad things happens and etc

I've only played up to partway through chapter 2, but the actual story didn't seem to be trying to say much, it was entirerily based on the mistery, so it's not like omori that it goes "find mari!" but then the story just really develops and it's in the search that the true message of the game is found, it's nothing like that.

The actual puzzle you solve and the ones that the characters solve in the story are also separate, so it's not like you're recieving the satisfaction of solving the mistery yourself. There is nothing wrong with this approach, watching people solve a mistery is satisfying, but for the love of god, if you're going to include puzzle on the game, why not make it them the actual puzzles the characters are facing, it jus seems like such a waste.

the whole game in a way feels meaningless, it tries to do so much but nothing really combines well, the story is this ARG type stuff surrounding characters you don't care about, the rhythm game is good but why would you play this over osu or etterna.

Now, the actual ARG puzzles, they're bad. They feel like they're there just because the dev thinks ARGs are cool, but it's just, it being a ARG doesn't contribute anything to the game. When games implement ARG stuff, think of off or inscription, they do it for ambience, it's a way of breaking the 4th wall, in off it works to make the game feel even more bizarre and in inscryption to make it feel creepy, but in here, I don't know what they were trying to accomplish, felt they watched video youtube essays and said "let's copy that!"

they didn't feel super amazing to solve either, the problem with ARG is that by breaking any boundaries it opens up the fan of possibilities A LOT. Let's put a famous game, portal 2, you got the chamber and the portal gun, you know exactly what are the tools you've got to work with and where to look, with games like off and inscryption, these ARG puzzles are never very complex and have very clear directions to where to look. It's less a difficult challenge and more poking at you and breaking the 4th wall

but here, you're just opening a website for the user and expecting them to solve it, bitch it could be ANYTHING, you no longer have a portal gun and a chamber, you have your entire computer to work with. Maybe it's the html code?, maybe it does something at a certain hour of the day?, maybe it's the url itself?, just play around until you find a solution that works!

thankfully the first episode chapter that was the one that I found wasn't very difficult, but yeah I can imagine it being a problem in the future as I think the philosophy is quite bad.

Also, pet peeve of mine, the vn segments show the actual hour ingame, but that clock doesn't move. I read half a chapter once and it apparently all took place inside a single minute which must be a oversight by the dev.

Also, the text position seemed bugged, a lot of the time it felt way too close at the bottom of the screen and some text overlapped with each other

So yeah, it just feels pointless, D rank, queue empty.

already played it sooo

Mother 3:

I frankly don't have that much to say about mother 3? which may seem surprising given how beloved of a game it is and how it inspired many of my favourites

I think in terms of gameplay it's less annoying than earthbound (mother 2), it adds a new timing mechanic to the hit, which I never was able to nail but may have also been because emulator input delay, I do not know.

I think the biggest appeal and frankly part of the popularity of mother 3 in the modern day is that it, in combination with earthboumd, were the first real mainstream RPG to really try to tell a serious story. Videogames as an artform were not really that accepted back in the day, so seeing a more adult game, tackling political issues and coming from nintendo, yeah, it absolutely shocked everyone.

The story is very much about capitalism, initially the town the protagonist lives in actually doens't really have currency, and then the pigmasks come, this technologically superior faction to implement currency and a capitalist system promising the citizens the whole entire world, and actively getting rid of the ones that oppose it. When the actually not politically motivated protagonist begins their fight against the pigmasks, he kinda just discovers the truth of the organization and what it does for people

I think the visuals in mother 3 are interesting, because frankly, they're not very different than the other rpgs being pushed at around the same time, which kinda worked in that favour of subverting your expectations by actually having a good plot

the 4th wall stuff was also cool, it doesn't do anything crazy with it, mainly for jokes, but it's unexpected and fun.

it's just a very artsy game at a time where it wasn't common, in my personal opinion we've done better games since then, but yeah, it's just very historically important. It's a B rank for me just due to personal preference, but yeah, no hate against it, really well done videogame and a important one at that.

I think I will not, these are not type of games I cover anyways, but i'm making an exception beacuse it's an RTS and I love RTS

Command and Conquer red alert 1 and 2

banger games

Command and conquer red alert is a world war 2 themed RTS, released at a time where this genre was still popular, and it became one of the biggest ones too. Like there were a lot of RTS at the time, all of them had a different setting, you had warcraft for fantasy, starcraft for sci fi, age of empires for historical, and command and conquer for military.

The actual story of command and conquer is whatever, it's told via full motion video cutscenes and some descriptions before starting each mission, however, this is very much not a narrative game and the story takes the sidelines, however, knowing that it was not the focus or the reason people bought the game, they did a decision that would make the games legacy last that much longer, they didn't aim to make a super epic or deep story, instead, they made it excedeengly silly.

The plot is batshit insane, with time travel, albert einstein creating superweapons, etc, but the important thing here is how the plot is delivered. Full motion video was actually more common back then than it was now, but they got real talent, and the way they deliver each line is amazing

The gameplay is very solid. There is only one resource and that is tiberium, this works in contrast to most rts that have multiple resources. Tiberium isn't a static resource, it's closer to the trees of age of empires meaning that you've got to move for the tiberium, it's not a gold mine. This makes it easier for your opponent to snipe your miners. While disrupting mining is a powerful technique in all rts, I feel in command and conquer is specially powerful.

The way production works is also different than most RTS, instead of you having to reach a x ammount of resources to then queue in a worker to start building the thing, you have a global UI that allows you to control the creation of every building and every unit. There are no worker unit in this game. This actually makes it easier for new playesr to really get the hang of the game. It's a lot easier to manage than having to learn what unit and what building does what.

Another thing that helps with lowering the barrier of entry is being able to queue buildings and units even if you don't have the resources to actually build it. This contrast with more RTS that you got to learn how to time your production to never float resources.

The combat feels more realistic than frankly most games out there, and not just talking about rts. Every unit is INSANELY powerful damage-wise, the problem is that they all have low accuracy, this makes it feel like a real war, there are also a lot of silly techniques like driving over units that actually works

sametdze
how is it a baby game? the only "baby" thing i can really see is the fact that's it's got this extremely bright and playful artstyle. asides the fnaf theme, it's really just a normal rpg which anyone can play. like you could literally remove the cuddly fnaf characters and replace them with wizards and sci-fi and spells and the game would still be pretty fun

and the fact you've only reviewed 301 things despite the fact this post has 2,343 replies definitely says something about you

edit: just realised that not all of these posts are people requesting. that still means pata has denied at least like, 600 to 700 requests 300 to 350 requests from my guess (please keep in mind i pulled these numbers straight out of the bin as a guess)

random mathematical shit dw about this too much its just my thinking
2,344 posts, 350 requests denied, 301 requests approved
2,344 - 651 = 1693 (this tells us that there are 1,693 posts not requesting for something)
301/651 = 0.4624
0.4624 x 100
46.24% of patatitta approving a request. nvm i was wrong lol, pata actually approves some of his stuff. mb bro

I tried counting how many I denied, and honestly it was a fucking mess I got lost counting it so it's around 50±20, and out of those, half where joke requests, such as every request from scyla or people quoting a post where I deny something and instantly suggesting something that is even more offensive on the reason why I denied the previous, you estimated 350. If you coun't the times i've uttered the word "denied" as a whole in the forums, not in just in this thread, and note that there are posts where i've used denied more than once for the same request, you have 84.

if you read the OP of the thread, it states in the section of blacklisted requests "-Fandom heavy content (If you need to be part of a fandom to really enjoy or understand something, don't request it)", I consider fnaf to be part of this categorization. You say that it can be stripped out of the IP and it would still work at a mechanical level, this is probably true, however, would you have played the game if it wasn't due to the fnaf IP?, if you did, would you have enjoyed it as much?, enough to warrant requesting it?

fnaf is a franchise of mascot horror games with a largelly young fanbase, the games don't tend to be exactly super complex or really that standout. You need to understand i'm not the target demographic for this type of game, i'm a human being doing this in my free time, but franchises like this I know i'm not going to enjoy them.

Fnaf 1 was fun and “revolutionary” in terms of gameplay at its time, no one knew what fnaf was, and everyone enjoyed the shit out of it

1) i wouldn't have actually ever discovered the game
2) i definitely would've enjoyed the game regardless if it had fnaf in it or not, me personally i really enjoyed the game for a variety of reasons (the numerous set of worlds, how you can walk into trees which send you to different areas which have different graphics and stuff, the mini-games from the halloween update, collecting characters, etc), not because holy schmoly freddy fazbear, so if it was like idk wizard and demons world i still would've requested it

while that is correct fnaf world is different to literally every other five nights game. all of the other games are survival horror where you're in a little office and robots are coming to beat you, fnaf world is a cartoony RPG where it's all fun and cute. i figured you'd like a neat rpg game like fnaf world because it's nothing like the other five nights games

and you definitely don't need to be apart of the fnaf community to understand the game, i was like 9 or 10 playing fnaf world with barely any understanding of what it was like to spend a night at freddy's other than big scary bear bites, and i still enjoyed the game.

I said mascot horror, not survival horror, different concepts. And again, I just don't trust fnaf at all, I know enough about it to know I don't enjoy it, I played a bit of fnaf 1 (or 2?, I can't recall), I've seen the movie, which people defended was good (it wasn't), and I know the way they deliver "story" is by being hyper cryptic and you having to learn about the lore by watching youtube video essays.

Idk, you know me, you've seen my backloggd, you've seen my past ratings, you know i'm not the demographic for this.

Patatitta wrote:

wether its mascot horror or survival horror, that still doesn't change the fact that fnaf world isn't horror at all, it's an rpg. trust me on this, it doesn't trick you and suddenly becomes horror, it stays a playful and cute rpg no matter what.

Patatitta wrote:

while that's fair, i'm asking you to try something which is totally different to the usual fnaf stuff. 1 and 2 and the movie aim to be scary but fnaf world does not try to be scary. yes i know im talking like a record on repeat but cmon dude. when i have told you its different to what you're used to, showed you evidence (the trailer) that it's different to what you're used to seeing from fnaf, i still don't see why you wouldn't at least try it for a bit because its nothing like what you've seen from fnaf. i mean, you've played the games and watched the film, upon watching the fnaf world trailer, surely you would've been like "ok, this is new"

as for story, fnaf world doesn't have anything to do with the fnaf lore. its a spinoff game the creator made to make another game like the games he used to make before he made fnaf

but if you still don't trust me or fnaf world purely because it has fnaf slapped on it, so be it. what more can i say to persuade you?

rejecting fnaf world purely because it has fnaf slapped onto it (aka "oh i just dont like fnaf") is stubborn and is exactly like feeding a baby new foods

a baby would probably think, "oh, i'm not going to eat this new food because it has green slapped onto it, i associate negative things with green food based on past experiences" the same way you think "oh, i'm not going to play this new game because it has fnaf on it, i associate negative things with fnaf based on past experiences"

but.. if the baby tries that food.. he might like it
and.. if pata tries that game.. he might like the game..

do you understand where im coming from? you can't just keep avoiding games from IPs you've had bad experiences with, especially when someone's explained that what's being requested is different and new from that IP. if this was a traditional five nights game and you said, "oh yeah, i've already played the og fnaf 1/2, not a big fan of it, denied", or maybe even your "oh, i just dont like fnaf", i probably would've been like, ok, cool, fair enough since a traditional five nights game plays similarly to og fnaf but when we're talking about an rpg which steps out of the traditional office setting, ??? you're only rejecting it because you're biased

It's fine if you like the game, but I can see Pata's point. The fact that it has FNAF in it in the first place is enough to turn many people off it; I think that's fair. Hard to enjoy a game if it has characters from a series you don't really enjoy.

If you enjoy it though that's great.

it’s depth. not just, “i don’t like fnaf,” but something like, “the party mechanics in this game seem weird,” or “this doesn’t look like the kind of rpg i enjoy, it’s missing x, y, and z.” even surface-level takes are fine if they show you actually engaged with what i showed you. maybe the trailer didn’t give enough info, i don’t know, but i was hoping for a bit more than a quick dismissal. (and, it does seem like the trailer kinda sold, that was my fault gang)

i never said “rejecting everything makes you a baby.” the analogy was about rejecting something based on surface-level assumptions, the same way a baby might refuse food just because it’s green. that said, i’ll admit ymir’s comment about not enjoying the game based on a lack of connection with the characters gave me something to think about, in a good way. it did sort of help me understand patatitta's view, even if it was a bit shallow, but it definitely steps up from "i just dont like it"

Polyspora wrote:

just because it’s “his thread, his rules” doesn’t mean i can’t try to persuade him. people get convinced all the time. nothing’s stopping me from saying, “hey pata, are you sure you don’t want to give this a try? it has x, y, and z, and does a, b, and c, y'know, maybe it’ll actually surprise you.”

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (Dropped)

dropped this game 6 hours in

This game is a mario a luigi game, so you alreay know how this game operates, it's a mario RPG where peahc is kidnapped and you got to rescue her. The combat is the same as every mario RPG, it's turn based but with action commands, so when you press the attack button you got to time a button press to when the attack hits so it does more damage, and also parry when you're attacked to negate/block part of the damage.

The only other mario RPG i've played is N64 paper mario, which I talked abotu in this thread, and my biggest criticism of that game is how much it wasted your time, zones were pretty empty and forced you to backtrack, combat was really easy however it took a lot of time, etc. This game is everything I disliked about that game but amplified to 11

combat is even easier than in n64 paper mario, since in most cases you can completely negate all the damage + do a counterattack that does damage. I honestly wonder what is the point of combat in this game, I mean that seriously. THe point of adding action imputs to tuirn based combat is to make it faster and more enjoyable to a broader audicence, in a game like expedition 33 getting a parry off is hype, you do the parry which is difficult and you feel good and then all the characters do this super cool animation and there are high number everyhwere and then on yoru turn you stop and think your strategy and you do it and even more super high numbers go off and your dopamine skyrockets. Doing a successful dodge in this game doens't feel hype, in many ways it's expected, if anything you get frustrated if you miss it, in addition to that all of the numbers in this game are small, but not small enough to where that is really a point of "wow that's cool" like in paper mario, so yeah, those action buttons fail to spice up turn based combat, as combat in this game is still boring as fuck.

the actual minigames in the spells are a bit more fun, however, I've neve really had any reason to use them, they don't do a lot more damage than a typical jump, they're limited in usage and they take a lot longer to use them plus it's a lot harder, it's just not worth the effort.

badges are okay, think of it as FF limit, you attack and that bar fills up and then you can do something strong, however the effects are not super exciting and I think the bar fills up too slow. One of the quirks of the badge system is that the effect comes from combining TWO badges, so you got to find the right combinations, I think that is cool, in gameplay it does nothing, but I think the extra 10 seconds it add everytime you get a badge to check all the combos and effect is cool.

mario games live and die on the gameplay, if the core gameplay is not good the game is ass, because these games have really nothing else going for them, the graphics aren't exactly unique, there is no story, it doesn't have any secondary hook.

Still, all of I told isn't even the worst part of the game for me. As I say i've played 6 hours, for context that is longer than some very respected games like oneshot take to beat, and i'm still not past the fucking TUTORIALS. The game assumes you've not played a single game in your life and also lack any critical thinking or thinking at all, it will explain everything in the most slow and obnoxious way possible.

There was a part where I got special attack and the game directed me to the info panel on that special attack, then I press the back button, which leaves me on the pause menu, where the button for special attack can be seen, and another press lets you in the game, I say, okay that's cool, game has told you where to see that info without having to directly spell it to you, and then the game goes LET'S SEE HOW TO SEE THE INFO ON SPECIAL ATTACKS, FIRST, OPEN THE MENU. So yeah, despite having already told you, it feels the need to do it once again. For context, this is like the 4th pause menu option they've introduced, and ALL of them have a tutorial where they tell you how to open the menu and click on the button.

EVERYTHING, even one time stage gimmiks have 2 minute long tutorials, as I said in the beginning the part I don't like when games waste my time, and this is just that, it's also completley impossible to skip in most circumstances so fuck you

I was getting nothing out of this experience, I had to drop it, also, if this game was called paper mario I bet people woul be A LOT more critical about this game. Placed on D rank.

I can't do this

for the record, i've not seen rick & morty, not because I don't like it, I've just never tried, this game is by the same guy behind rick & morty, which is the main VA. This game you have a gun that talks a lot (like every other character in the game) which this guy narrates. This game tries to be funny, really tries, I think it completely fails tho.

I didn't think the game was gunny, in fact, I woulf probably have completed the game if it didn't have any dialogue at all. The style of comedy this game goes for is that every 5 seonds there is a joke of some sort, told by either you gun or a random character. Having super fast comedy and punch lines isn't new or even bad, that's kinda the way slapstick movies work, the idea is that you laugh at a joke which makes you more prone to laughing to the next joke in a process tso fasat it will leave you short of breath. The main difference between high on life and airplane is that this game is apparently improv.

the jokes aren't preplaned or anything like that, apparently they just let this one dude talk over the game and that stuck, I don't think this really works in the context of a videogame, what would end up happening is that because the game wasn't really built around to facilitate the jokes, it becomes very, very, very messy. You're walking and a voiceline starts playing making a joke and then it gets cut midway through because of another voiceline starting and a lof of the jokes are just mentioning like "oh you just did that huh". It would just get INSANELY annoyingand I really didn't laugh at all.

There is no comedic timing, no setup, no smart jokes, just a LOT of really bad jokes that while may be funny conversationally with a friend they're not really at the level that you would expect from a game or a movie.

I really enjoy comedy, even in videogames, I think it's underrated and more games should try to be funny, I really enjoy games like unmetal or undertale 2 (or even regular undertale/deltarune tbh), but in those games, the jokes are actually memorable and they're tailored in a very careful way so that they hit just at the right moment.

The actual gameplay on high on life is ok, it borrows a lot of mechanics from modern doom/ultrakill, which are on paper really good. For example, you have a melee weapon that is not only strong but you gain valuables resources by killing a enemy with melee, incentivicing you to get close and personal with the enemies. Doom and Ultrakill are both fast games where this is possible, however in high on life, you have this very open environment with not much mobility and most enemies do run away from you, so like what the fuck. They just copied the mechanics but didn't understand how to make them work.

Pretty lackluster game, kinda tanked my mood, placed on how could you do this to me tier

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun

very messy narrative-wise but the art is really solid

Hanako-kun is about this school girl who hears about these 7 misteries of the school. So yeah, just typical school rumours and legends, but, these time, they are real. One of them is about a ghost that lives in the girl's toilet, this ghost is of course hanako-kun, who befriends this girl.

The narrative is messy and borderline aimless at times, at first it just explores what the other school misteries are leading to small arcs wich are light on tone, but as the manga goes on and the author realizes that this manga is going ot last for very long the arcs gets longer and the stakes are higher and the tone darker.

The manga starts with this very typical shoujo (more like directed to females than itself falling onto the categorization and publishing category of shoujo) trope of the attractive, misterous, normally paranormal guy with a touch of danger interacting with these other characters, the smug smile that hanako-kun consistently does for the first half of the manga is proof of this. The female protagonist at the start almost does feel like a character that is inviting for you to insert yourself into the story. Doesn't help that they consistently bait and suggest romance with the mc and hanako-kun, It's a very common trope nowadays, for example look at Bakemono Yawazukushi (tho that is more fujoshibait) or annarasumanara, hell, look how down bad a lot of women are for gojo from jujutsu kaisen. I don't know if hanako-kun was the one that popularized this trope or not, but I can tell for sure it's that.

As the anga progresses and it turns more serious, it turns more into a shounen. There aren't as many jokes and it's all more serious with more fights. However, all of that romance plot at the start kinda gets frozen, both hanako kun and the MC don't really develop taht much, and the relationship between them doesn't deepen. The mana sidesteps this issue by adding new main characters that do have other romances and complex relationships between them to give the reader the satisfaction of character developement.

Personally I think this manga shouldn't have gone for as long as it has gone, they're currently at volume 24, that is A LOT, and it's just clear that the author doesn't really know where they want the story to go, I think just the foundations of this manga are too weak to really support this 20+ volume epic. I would have written an ending at like volume 10 or so myself or just evolved the relationship and having the manga from that point to explore the nature of that relationship, more akin to something like apollon.

Now, the art of hanako-kun is FANTASTIC and honestly hard-carries the manga for me. It uses very wide strokes and consistent and striking use of that black with panels that are basically on negative color which reminds me of land of the lustrous. Presented in these massive one page panels and even full spread panels. The paneling is fantastic, really acentuating the art and being quite original on it's own right.

I think one of the aspects that make the art so memorable it's because it's a unique artstyle, but despite that, it's not like reading a super avant garde niche manga where it barely looks line anime, it is very much still anime, it still maitains anime charm, but you can still see a panel and instantly know it's of hanako-kun or even the author of hanako-kun.

Reading this for me felt like reading a CLAMP manga (specifically xxxHolic+sequels and cardcaptor sakura+sequels since those are the ones i've read), the story isn't that good, but just seeing the panels and the art makes reading this worth it. Placed on B tier.

Started the darkness, may take a while on this one since i've never played a shooter on a controller and the game is being quite difficult for me, despite that, i'm pleasantly surprised by the game so far, I think it's quite good.

The Darkness

Pretty good game, shame that I got softlocked and didn't finish the game lmao

the darkness is a xbox 360/ps3 game where you play as this comoc book character, the darkness, who is a mafioso who is very cool and edgy and kills people and can control thios eldritch creature called the darkeness to kill more people in even cooler ways. Look, it's a adaptation of a comic book released in the 90's, and in the 90's "mature" and edgy thing were trending.

From what i've played, the story isn't exactly peak by any means, you're just mandated around by npcs and you do evil and twisted things. The story isn't really trying to sell you on a important messege and really ar just setups for you to go on gameplay sections and be cool.

my experience with gameplay is a bit tainted since this was my first time playing a shooter with a controller, which felt very difficult for me. Like unironically, playing this game has made me appreciate dark souls more, I was like "oh I get it, dark souls was the first 3d game to actually have good feeling combat with a controller"

the shooting mechanics are not like the ones we see in modern day. It's closer to golden eye than it is to counter strike. You can't actually aim, you can double wield weapons that you shoot one with each trigger. While you can get into cover, it's not that encouraged, it's not a cover shooter, it's not recommended, shooting while in cover is very difficult and I found it frankly not worth it, this is not gears of wars.

In order to not ide you usally just use a summon that acts like a tank, taking aggroo and leatting you waltz in and kill everyone. I also enoy that "melee" attack the darkness has, where you shoot one of your tentacle thingies to a enemy The tentacles are small and they creep through the floor, and the camara does follow it from the point of view of the tentacle, leading to this creeping grodund shot that is acutally used a lot in horror movies and the such, I really like that camera plane.

I don't think this shooting mechanics wer inherently good or bad, was just kind of the meta at the time and it served it's job of giving frenetic gameplay, which was what the game was going for. If you were the motherfucking darkness but the combat was this hyper slow, calm combat, you wouldn't feel much like the darkness would you

What I really enjoyed about this videogame is the ambiance, it's very dark and giity like you wpuld excepect, but it doesn't feel cheap or forced, I think it actually nails that ambientation. The game is very silent and verty dark, with light sources actually not illuminating very much, just making the surrounding area into a brighter color, but not giving more light, which makes breaking the light sources which you're encouraged to do actually enjoyable. It's a relatively silent game, the ost it does have doesn't go super hard or is invasive to your ears. I think the fact that you need to go to the different metro stations and actually wait there makes the world feel more alive, game does give you a lot of freeedom of choice when it comes to killing random npcs even if they were to have a a sidequest

Another thing this game does is that it doesn't have quest trackers, you listen what your goals are via conversation you often can't repeat and you just have to remember it, the game does give you freedom to go wherever from the moment you want, so you can actually get lost and have to resort to a guide, which while can be frustrating, I think really shows there was that aim to make this game as immersive as they knew how to.

I honestly would like to se a remake of this game now that we live in a post-metro world, I would like for them to take some design lessons from the metro franchise and remake this game going full into crafting a atmospheric and immersive experience.

I enjoyed it even if I couldn't finish it, placed on C tier.

The darkness 2:

This isn't even remotely close to the first game lmao like this is completely different

The first darkness ame was made by 2k games, the second one, by digital extremes (in collaboration with 2k). Digital extremes is currently known as the company behind warframe, a game that I enjoy, however, I hadn't ever really tried any of their older games.

While the darkness 1 was gritty and atmospheric, darkness 2 is a lot more over the top, a lot less serious and more gameplay focused. The gunplay and shooting mechanics were modernized to be closer to what we see today, right click to aim, left to shoot.

In addition to shooting, in this game we also control the darkness, which has been made completely useless when compared to the first game. You can no longer control what summons, it does it for you, but you have more hp and are meant to get close and personal with the enemies to melee, also killing allows you to eat their heart which revoers HP. So the summon is not really working as a tank anymore.

You can grab enemies and execute them in a really cool doom execution type sequence, this is of course, completely useless. Like, it's a slower and mroe risky way of killing someone rather than just shooting them.

The difficulty curve in this game is wack, at first, a headshot with a handgun will oneshot every enemy, in ordwer to make the game more difficult, starting from a certain level, enemies will have helmets, meaning you need one shot to remove the armor and another to kill... or you can just shoot with the cobra handgun to the body and that will oneshot. Literally shooting to the head is LESS effective than shooting to the body.

honestly may have just been because I maxxed out the gun talent tree, and given the enemies and environment drops ammo for the weapons you're currently holding instead of general ammunition, I was not running out of ammo in my cobra, note that the cobra is a secondary weapon, it's not supposed to be the big guns, but yaeh, it was completely broken

you can also dual wield guns like in the darkness 1, but this is again a bad idea, ammo economy is bad and since you can't aim accuracy is awful. Only really found a few situations where it was useful, that was when you unlocked the talent that allowed you to imbue the weapons in darkness making them not cost ammo and deal more damage and also gave you aimhack and wallhacks so you just kinda let it rip with double machineguns. Basically oneshotted a boss like that.

The leven design is also different, instead of this open world with side quests and not a single quest tracker, the darkness 2 is extremely lineal, it being divided in levels with very clear goals and quest trackers. The graphics also indicate that change in tone, instead of dark and gritty it has that comic book style that was popular around that time.

The story is not very good. The whole plot is that the darkness reawakens on the protagonist and there is this organization trying to steal the darkness from them. It's just kind of nonsensical, the darkness is extremely op on our side but completely useless on their side, the rules about how the darkness transference works doesn't even hold up 5 minutes later. The story doens't say anything, only really creates situation for the protagonist to be cool. There are two decisiosn but like they don't have consequences at all. There is also all this stuff surrounding the gf of the protagonist which I just thought was kind of dumb. Mainly the fact that the darkness would ACTUALLY keep the gf captive in a place where theoretically the protagonist could get through instaed of killing her and creating a illusion because you know the darkness can do that.

Also the game ends with this massive cliffhanger and given the darkness 3 never happened, it's completely unresolved

in terms of how enjoyable it was to play, darkness 2 was more fun than darkness 1, however, darkness 1 was more unique. Placed in C tier

the wolf among us

They really did not nail the landing with this game

the wolf among us is a game by telltale, so it featuers that characteristic telltale format where it's basically a tv show made into a interactive videogame, you watch cutscene plays, and then you can select dialogue that is supposed to influence the story.

The game is divided into five 2 hour episodes, each one complete with a summary, a opening, and a preview, it's really trying to sell you on that interactive tv show fantasy, but I don't think they quite nailed the landing, for example, the reason why summaries and preview exists are to aid the viewer who is watching the show while it's airing, you can catch up to a story even if it's been a year since the last episode, and it creates hype for the next episode, problem is that this doesn't actually aid the viewer who is playing it after it all aired.

I get that there is no skip button for the summary and preview since there was no skip button in live television, and given that was the feel they were going for, they chose not to add it. However, since 2013 that was when this game released, streaming services have become more popular, and they allow you to skip summaries and endings, even openings, but the otaku inside me will never skip those. It just makes sense, it's a better viewing experience

I think this illustrates a very important point. Telltale was trying to basically 1:1 tv shows, this is a very different philosophy than visual novels for example. While VN's are literally an adaptation of regular physical novels into a videogame format, they really embrace the videogame medium, having developed into a literary genre that is COMPLETELY different than regular novels. They took advantage of the medium of videogames and that improved the works, the wolf among us isn't like this, it doesn't really take into consideration the strenghths and disadvantages of the medium

I think one clear example is the action scenes, there is a lot of action in the wolf among us, and it never quite felt great. While there is plenty of good action in videogames, telltale didn't want to have an actual fighting system ingame, and instead went with prerecorded quicktime events, and I don't think their implementation really works all that well. The action never really feels all that good or that satisfying, yet they have the same ammount of action than the shows they're trying to imitate despite it being not as effective.

My problem with the quick time events is that they flow very badly. We need to understand that this game was marketed to a very broad demographic, I would even argue that this game was NOT really marketed to the typical hardcore gaming audience, so, the game had to be made easy, this implies that every time there is a quick time event, the action basically freezes to give you more time to press the action, killing the flow. In some circumstances there werent' really any tells a quick time event section was going to start, so you also needed time to allow the player to react that they should put their hands on the keyboard (at least that was my experience, it's very clear that this game was mostly created with consoles in mind). Another problem with this is that given they expected less experience players, they also assumed they would be worse at masshing, giving into situations where I would mash too fast and would have to wait for the cutscene to match up with me so the game could continue, being stuck at 100% quicktime completion and just having to wait.

I don't think these are inherent problems with quicktime events, I think they can be done very well, like in the yakuza franchise for example. When you're mid boss and it turns to a cinematic you KNOW there are going to be quicktime events, which are very fast most of the time, they don't stop the action to allow you to press the button, maybe with a small slowdown of the action right before the impact, but that also doubles as a way to make the combat feel more impactful. It's like in smash bros, where after you hit someone really hard, the game freezes for a few frames to give more impact to the hit.

Let me illustrate a comparasion

you tell me what one is cooler

The one big selling point of telltale and the wolf among us is that is well, a interactive tv show, one where you can make decisions and for those decisions to matter, this is kind of bullshit?, the story is VERY lineal, most of the dialogue doesn't matter, and the one that does is followed by a contrived plot section to get you in the right place for the story to proceed, even the different endings that you can get are not very different, since it was supposed to have a sequel and they didn't just want to make one specific ending canon.

The decisions are also like "do you want to murder this civilian or not", they're FAR from moral decisions, in fact at the end of each chapter you get a overview of your choices and what most players took, and a lot of decisions are very onesided, like in the last chapter there was a decision where 97% of all players chose the same thing, that's a lot.

This game was released right at the start of the seventh generation of consoles, so xbox one and ps4, this is VERYT Important, as it was in this generation when there was this massive push to really mix videogames and movies/tv shows. I think the xbox one is an infamous console for this same reason, all of it's marketing was focused on the fact that you could run netflix on it, almost seemed like videogames took a backseat. At the same time, it makes sense microsoft tried to push in this direction given a lot of people basically bough ps2 just in order to run dvds on it.

There was a lot of attempt to make this format work, another famous example is the 2018 black mirror episode, bandersnatch, but I just don't think they're really focusing it the right way. You sould make a videogame first, tv show second, NOT the opposite, which was what was being tried

it's not like we don't have purely narrative videogames nowadays, it's just that most of those videogames are either visual novels or more of a point and click nature, and by last genre I mean stuff like disco elysium, 1000xResist, until then, a space for the unbound, I just don't really know how to categorize them. These are genres that DO take advantage of the medium and the stories benefit from it greatly, again, it's not like the genre of videogames doesn't allow for opportunities to perform good storytelling. It's just, that these type of videogames don't really appeal to the market they were trying to sell these games to, if it's too videogamy you may not grab that casual audience that you were aiming for, but IMO that approach just makes the actual games worse. A more videogamey telltale game could work, but just making fully animated, fully voice acted games is expensive and no one is really trying, can't blame them tho, telltale did go bankrupt after all.

Another problem with the tv show approach is that they invite you to watch every episode in a row, the save points are often infrequent which also makes no sense since that makes it super easy to save scum in this game kinda deminishing the point of "your action have consequences". Problem is that each episode as a I said is 2 hours long and I don't really usually do play sessions that long.

Now, the actual story of the wolf among us is... bad, the plot is that there exists this new york ghetto where fairy tale creatures live in, the nature and politics of this region are not really explained or explored, may be so in the original comisc they were based of (DC: fables), but it's at least not in the videogame.

There is a murder and you, the big bad wolf, sheriff of the neighborhood, needs to solve the mistery. Not a bad setting by any means, but again, they mess up the execution. A LOT of characters are introduced, but none of them have developement. Characters don't grow as much as they reveal they have a dark secret. They would rather add 20 more characters, each one with a couple of layers of things they're covering up than to let anyone grow. While it's not like you're struggling to keep track of who is who, the characterization is quite good so that's not a problem, the cast feels too convoluted.

The game also lacks a message, they sell you on this social critique, about how the economy of these type of ghettos can push someone to a life or crime, but they don't expand on that, they don't make any comments rather than the base observation, a observation that I Think it's pretty obvious and well known. They try to tackle other social issues like racism but again, it's such a shallow critique that it hurts, there is no nuance, in fact, most of these themes are brought up and then just brought up again, it's such a shame.

The plot also suffers from it being kind of unrealistic, i'm not saying "fairy tales creatures are not real!! grow up!!", I just mean, the whole world feels inconsistent. AFAIK as I know the ghetto is still very much part of new york city and the united states as a whole. In fact, in episode 2, the NYC police gets involved (and then they never appear again)...

This story is so focused on the ghetto that it forgets that everything else exists, it just makes you question "oh, why is the federal police not really getting involved in this?", because if they didn't and that was argumented it could make a very interesting point about how the governmend don't care or want to get involved with problems in this neighborhood, pointing out the racism inherent in the system but they just don't do that, they get involved, but then they are wrote out of the story. It's literally easier to make meaningful commentary than to find the way to not say anything, which is what they somehow did.

At the end of the game there is a trial, this trial fucking SUCKS. They didn't even have a courtroom, and it's not like they didn't have the resources, it's not like the government wouldn't be interested in processing the ones selling illegal drugs effectively making them NOT buy the government produced ones. In fact, now that i'm writing this, given that every fable was meant to buy and use this drug, wouldn't it have been a big fucking tell seeing so many people not actively buying them??????? it's not like everyone who took the illegally produced drugs where illegal inmigrants that have no documentation inside the system.

The trial was just insanely awful, literally everyone on the room HATED the crooked man, yet he says "oh well I didn't technically kill lily and faith it just happened to be done by a employee of mine in my illegal drug producing operation run by slave labour you can't convict me of that" and everyone goes "well shit he has a point we maybe should let them free" and i'm like EXCUSE ME?????????????????????? And again, there WAS evidence, like again, even if they couldn't be convicted for the killing, they could be convicted for the production of illegal drugs, that literally could be VERY easily proen with the laboratory that we literally visited last episode??? the one with the fucking SHACKLES in the floor and a big ass blackboard writing about the production and selling of drugs. In episode 1 I think it was tehre is also a point where the protagonist picks up a gun, and someone asks if they could be checked for fingerprints, where the protagonist says yes, that there should be fingerprints in the trigger and handle. Did we forget about that????? like yeah they weren't the crooked man fingerpritngs but have they forgotten the whole REALM of forensic sciences during the course of this stopry??, don't tell me they didn't have the resources they had the backing of the federal governmend and also a magic like a MIRROR THAT ALLOWS YOU TO LITERALLY SPY ON THE WHOLE GLOBAL POPULATION ARE WE NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE FACT THAT THEY LITERALLY RUN A SURVEILANCE STATE????????????????????????????????????????

edit: forgot to talk about art this has gone for long enough already it's good I like that style it's a good adaptation of the comic book style to a videogame setting.

edit 2: I also forgot to say a lot of options you choose it and then the character says something completely different that what you had in mind which is also a problem IMO god I have SO MUCH to say about this game

Such a messy, such a empty, such a underbaked plot, really, I think it was terrible. Placed on D rank
