Hardly any new CTB maps getting ranked recently

Just have been noticing over the last few weeks the number of ranked sets has gone down drastically. Since I play every new set it was usually about 1 set per day however recently it’s been more like 1 set a week.

I know the common response will be “why not map yourself instead of complaining” which I will answer that with “I’m not complaining just wondeting why?”

Was wondering if many mappers have quit recently or maybe BNs have been innactive so nothing is getting pushed etc.

Osu!Catch is the least popular gamemode, so there are a lot less catch beatmappers then there are mappers for other gamemodes.

Yeah I get that, standard usually has multiple sets a day, I was just noting that it’s dropped off alot in the last month.

February (so far): 2 sets (2/7 = 0.28 sets per day)
January: 14 sets (14/31 = 0.45 sets per day)
December: 26 sets (26/31 = 0.84 sets per day)
November: 24 sets (24/30 = 0.8 sets per day)
October: 33 sets (33/31 = 1.06 sets per day)
September: 19 sets (19/30 = 0.63 sets per day)
August: 36 sets (36/31 = 1.16 sets per day)
July: 25 sets (25/31 = 0.80 sets pet day)
June: 41 sets (41/30 = 1.37 sets per day)

Just saying we seem to be on a downward trend in general. January was the lowest we’ve had in a long time and February is tracking even lower than January so far

I guess every beatmapper has just gotten started making a new catch map. Or a maybe all the catch BNs are really busy right now.

playing community is growing but mapping isn't, there are very few guides and resources for people to map, and it's very unintuitive at first, it's a miracle we even have maps tbh

to be fair this isn't a particularly new issue, I suppose it's a lot more apparent now than ever but there have been numerous moments in the past where there's like only 2-3 maps at most in the qualified section compared to other modes that might have twice or triple the amount and more.

Why is this a issue? outside of the mode just simply not being that popular compared to the other modes I couldn't tell you. maps generally have to go through several stages before they can reach the ranked section. They must first get at least 5 hypes which is usually not that hard (can always ask a friend or request in mapping dicsord servers or certain modding queues) this is basically upvoting the map. Then there's having to receive Mods(feedback) which might be problematic given a large portion of modders are BNs in catch at least from what I've seen. Requesting to BNs can be a hit or miss at times especially if you don't have an established connection with them already since you REALLY have to take into consideration their preferences as well as maintaining a certain level of map quality which I'll get to that later.

Once you've received enough mods you need to get 2 BNs to do a check on your map for any mistakes/unrankables or suggestions. if all is good it is free to get nominated by the BNs where it now qualified until 7 days until it can get ranked unless an issue is spotted where it gets dq'ued until the isssue is resolved where it has to re-nominated by those or 2 other BNs

As a new mapper, this might be difficult to deal with and perhaps intimidating to an extent thus communication is crucial for any meaningful progress. Modding queues are one such way of at least getting some feedback on how you could improve but that's no good for catch since all the forums are pretty inactive (they're almost all closed or haven't been touched in years). you are may be left with the other option of using the chats #mapping and #modreq but good luck with that honestly. alright so that's 2 options down, what now? You could perhaps go to modding servers on discord which Is perhaps the single best and maybe only option to use if you want to take mapping seriously. There seems to still be a genuine community centred on mapping in catch but It's probably a bit small but It does exist.

So if I had to take a guess it's maybe a mix of fatigue from existing mappers/modders/BNs, not enough influx of new mappers, weird and ambiguous barrier of entry.

Fuck me then.

TLDR; You have to go through Dante's 9 Circles of Hell to get a map ranked. That sounds fun!

i mean, at least it's not as drastic as the few ctb maps getting loved.

meanwhile at taiko you can look at some random weird map like "breaking the habit (wound to the heart ver.)" or another SV based map and it will hardly have 2 or 3 basic mods on the discussion page.

unfair

Yes and 2022 for the most part was pretty good, I am saying right at the end of 2022 and going into 2023 seems very low.

I still feel it's a little bit too soon to make assumptions. like I said, this isn't really a new thing but it's definitely concerning since I'll admit this is a new low

Oh one interesting thing looking at that info. My comment of “1 set a day” was pretty accurate for 2021 & 2022 seeing as it was only a 0.2% change between the two years and it was only 1 set short of being 1 set per day for 2022 with December and November being below this average. We also were the only mode that didn’t see significant growth from 2021 to 2022.

Currently for 2023 we are less than half of that. I will agree that it’s a bit early to make this assumption though.

February ended up with 15/28 = 0.53 so much better than the 0.28 we started the month with however was still low. Start of March is looking positive however seeing as we have 11 maps in qualified atm.
