A little context:

The name change feature has always been restricted to users who donated (and can only be used once)

The peppy-quote above are conditions for someone *else* to essentially take over some inactive user's name. They must have not played the game significantly (less than 100 plays requirement), and must not have logged in for nearly 2 years.

The real way to read this, if you don't play osu! often, but want to make sure you don't lose your account, log in at least once a year (pretty easy) and/or get your playcount over 100. All accounts that have played at least 100 times are secured from having their names stolen.

Actually I was able to change to this name even though the former user logged on recently, he didn't have any plays though.

Great, I'm on a holiday for 2 weeks and half of the community decides to change his/her username. Will be a bit harder to identify people now...

That's pretty much what I thought too.

Considering that osu! is one of the few places where I have the name I originally wanted, I'm not changing any time soon.

Why do people go to so much trouble to have a particular name?


Edit: Pardon me if it has been answered already, but do users that have been inactive for years have their accounts deleted in order for you to use their names?

Actually I guess it's closer than I thought. 640 days is the rule, that's about 2 years, so wait until 2011 to see :p

OK..there is a questions..
some of the users are..

Laterly, some users try to log on their accounts illegally.
They did not actual have any laptops or PC-value; however, the point was not focus on the PC-values. But, they did ensure their accounts could not be deleted or "stolen" by any other users.

They said it's stupid that someone can keep their username by logging in frequently, even if their playcount (PC) is zero. Malicious, for example, has had an account for 1 1/2 years, but has 0 forum posts and 0 playcount. :c

Actually, I think you guys misunderstood my opinion.
I was not saying the guy, who was marked by red font, but my stupid words that made by translation machine (My English is so poor).

You don't need to ask, as long as no one else has the name and you have donated to osu! at least once you can change it yourself in your profile

Different interpretations of "just" there :)

Still, the account is, unfortunately, not nearly old enough. It needs to be at least 1.5 year old, apparently (yeah OP says 640 days but I have my sources).

i'm still pissed

because i waited ALMOST 640 days for a name and repeatedly asked if somebody would help me and nobody responded. i even pointed out that while they last logged in was march 9th, 2009, their last playcounts were september 2008 and MM [i think] was like "NO WAY", even though it was obvious if you looked at the playchart

but it doesn't matter now I guess because I was so annoyed I changed my name and peppy changed it back because morons were spamming it in the chat

i'm just going to leave this here even though nobody's going to care that this is the FIFTH time i've asked. i don't want to continually bitch about it [nor do I want to stop playing, as peppy suggested], but yeah. to say i'm unsatisfied is an understatement

It's not that I think this because it could benefit me if this was changed but, having to wait almost 2 years to be able to delete a never-used account is a little too much, I'd understand if the guy played like 50 maps and then quitted but, come on there are many accounts that were never, ever used and certainly won't really be used since the one who registered it probably doesn't even remember it's password. But it's fine, having to wait 2 years is better than not being able to get the name. xd

Ah, well it is possible to link your paypal account to your bank account, so if you pay with paypal it will automaticly be taken off your bank account.

Okay, so I've just donated, now I'd like to change my name. Only question: I have a beatmap which i want to submit soon, but it still has my old name in it. Will it change automatically in the map file or will I have to do it (and is that comlicated)? Should I change my name before or after uploading the map? Sorry, I don't know much about this.^^

Well peppy, I'm sorry if I'm such an ignorant. I didn't see the "You can take an existing user's username if they haven't logged in for over 1.5 years, and have a playcount of under 400." and thought it needed a special way.
