Hey, I just read through this whole thread to see if anybody asked the same thing I was gonna ask, but I didn't seem to find anything like that, just the opposite.

Basically, this happened to me four or five times during my osu career (I play mania for about nine months now). In this rare instance, I get into these...states of mind and ability that I can beat songs that are MUCH harder than my usual skill cap and I get crazily better scores on my high scores if I play all my favorite songs when I get into that state.
Like, an example when I first had that...at that time my skill cap was that HD difficulty of Megistune 4k, and I couldn't even play MX diff without failing, but that one time where I got into the state, i FCed high scores on so many songs and got an A score on the Megistune MX difficulty I couldn't usually even pass!!!

On one side, I feel bad when I get into these states, because I literally rape al much high scores and the next day when that "state" ends, I'm back to my old skillcap and I feel like I don't deserve those newly obtained high scores

I should also mention that I was NOT under the influence of any drugs while in the states, they come completely random (same sleeping pattern, lifestyle, everything's the same)
Can anybody relate to this? I feel frustrated because of this because I play so well when it happens..and when it ends I'm just back to being at my usual skillcap..
this never came into my entire o2jam career. but that's probably just me instantly recognizing that "weird" feeling you got. Or I haven't reached your dilemma yet. because I'm still failing at Megitsune MX!!!!

edit: actually I passed. 81% accuracy T______T

honestly I don't even know myself what my "bottleneck" is. But if I have to guess, its my forearms hurting at bursts. my limit is 3.7 - 4.2 stars difficulty.

I have little problem right now. I took a break from O!m for about 2 weeks and now all my skill is gone. I can barely get B on maps I could easily A on. I get 550k on maps I could get 750k on. I can't read patterns any more. Right now I play as good as I played five months ago. It's really frustrating. What should I do other than playing more?
ovnz
It took me a little time to get used to mania again after taking a break personally. Play as you usually play during like one week, you should get your skill back.

Yeah. If you lost skill from a break, aka became "rusty", you'll have some re-training to do plain and simple. But at least you can assure yourself that the time span between your current level and the level you were will most likely be shorter than the first time around.

Breaks are also great for improving, once you reach the level you were at again, most the time you'll find yourself keeping that same improvement rate and improve well beyond that point. ^^

So yeah, I'm not aware of any magic tricks to give skills back... If you really want it back you'll have to work for it :p

Yep, same experience here. Sometimes you can get lucky and come back from a break as good as you were before, but most times you come back rusty and have to spend a while regaining (and then passing) your old skill.

Hi guys, I just want to know if there's a way to train finger speed. Because I can't stream fast in 4K (above 200 bpm). I can read the pattern but my fingers aren't fast enough to play it properly. I usually get around 85% on these songs, should I keep on pushing myself or is it better to start on lower bpm songs. Thank you :)

Drace_old_1
Hm I've never really ran into finger speed problems. Seemed like my finger speed increased at the same rate as my reading did. Though if I were to recommend something I'd say play stuff way above your level (spam tier) here in there, it's what I used to do for stamina. Might show results for finger speed too.

Hello, great guide, thanks a lot for creating it, I will come back here often! :) I'm new to osu!mania (like 1k retries), so I've got a question to you guys - is there any kind of exercise that can help me with my finger independence? (excluding playing ofc c: ) Also... I've got a problem with this pattern - any tips/good beatmaps to train it? :)
ovnz
Train your finger independence before trying to learn patterns. There isn't really any tips to train any pattern btw, just play it, that's all.

Guys, I guess it's been more than 3 months that I'm stuck at 2~3 star 7k maps and can't improve.
I think I'm ok at normal notes patterns. I can pass Intersect Thunderbolt [Hard] without too much effort, but when it comes to LN "heavy" maps such as Wake up!, Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi and Fight 4 Real... I fail miserably. I can't even get more than 85% accuracy without my brain exploding in the process. lol

I know there's not much I can do besides playing more, but are LNs supposed to be this hard?

Play more LN heavy maps. If you still find LNs hard, play even more LN heavy maps.

The difficulty of reading LNs vary from people to people. As a BMS + gracenote + burst heavy + 1000 notes per second+ player, learning LNs personally was a painstalking process (took me 4 months to actually be able to read LNs like Sister's Noise Lv. 42 with a bad accuracy) unlike those who played o2jam. Don't worry, you'll get to the point where reading LNs are easier than they are for you as of the moment.

Sometimes the obvious answer is the one we need the most.
It's true that I've been avoiding LN maps hoping to magically do better the next time I play them, so I decided to focus on them for the time being. Thanks. :p

Glad to hear that.
I'll do my best then. Today I played lots of LN maps and it seems that I'm getting a little better already...

Just thought I'd share with you guys how I'm doing.

Remember the maps I was struggling to pass before? Now I'm able to score at least 90% at them.
What I've been doing:
  1. Playing a lot of mania 7k LN heavy maps
  2. Playing some converts from o2jam. I think many of them are weird, but I'm doing my best to play them right. @_@
  3. Playing other rhythm games as well
  4. Trying to play 4k inversed maps with this tool (with the lite option obviously), as seen in this video I recorded:

It would be best to do it in 7k maps, but my keyboard can't handle more than 6 key presses at once and there aren't many 6k maps in mania, so I guess I don't have many choices other than doing it in 4k or buying a better keyboard.
tl;dr; I'm playing a lot

Still, there are 3 maps that still seem to be way too hard for me, but I feel like I'll be able to pass them after 2 more months of training. lol
Sawano Hiroyuki - Blowin'
ZAQ - VOICE (TV Size)
T.M.Revolution x Nana Mizuki - Preserved Roses (TV-Size)

I'm much better, definitely, but it's still not enough.
Oh, well, I'm having fun.

Good to know you're having fun. Btw there are many maps out there with 6presses or less at once for 7k.
I think these has 6 or less for example.

Everyone is different. Some people will always have big swings in skill. On a bad day my scores can be more than 100k worse than my usual skill level. On a good day I've had scores 100k better than my usual.

Playing regularly has a big impact on your skill too, because the longer you go between sessions, the longer it will take to get back to your peak skill when you do play.

i've been playing osu mania for maybe 5 months i can play 4 star map but then i stopped playing because my pc is broken for 2 months and i play really poor again, and that is why i'm searching for tips like this but up until now my training in osu!mania based from star rating like right now i can play 3 star beatmap now i'm aiming to be able play 4 star beatmap, after reading this i saw that there is something called horizontal reading and vertical reading i've never used this both or maybe i unconsciously used them i try to read it like that but it just doesn't work its like there is no time to make blocks for horizontal reading how i read the notes is simple just see the notes then press it is it because i'm playing at 25 speed?

Play more

You won't learn anything right off the bat, 7k takes a lot longer to improve on and you have to keep playing it until horizontal reading and vertical reading is something that comes to you naturally and without any pre-meditated thought.

Scroll speed is irrelevant in this case, that's just how fast you can read something comfortably. For what it's worth though, try playing at 1 lower speed like 24; that's what I use whenever I play 7k.
Shimomura
so i just need to keep practicing and keep trying to learn how the horizontal and the vertical reading comes naturally to me?
Bobbias
When you play, try to identify the patterns your playing. think about the way the mapper has mapped the song. If you can't do this while you're playing without getting bad scores, you're not at the skill level where this will matter anyway.

It's natural to lose skill after a long break, and it can take time to build back up to where you were. Lower reading speed might help this process, but even if it does, it probably won't be a big effect.

So, As you improve at the game, being able to hit notes should become basically automatic for you. If you can think about all sorts of other things and still play the song properly, you're at the stage where you can begin paying attention to patterns more closely to the actual patterns themselves.

What I do when I play maps is try to identify exactly what sounds each note follows. I also analyze it like I would if I was mapping it. I look for any inconsistencies in patterns. I look for how the mapper transitions between different patterns. That sort of thing.

Vertical and Horizontal reading are just 2 different ways to look at a pattern. I use both at the same time on maps I'm not familiar with.
Shimomura
thanks i will try your tips

They don't appear often in the lower difficulty maps, however inversions and LN walls are key components in higher difficulty o2jam style or ln style maps.

Here are some examples:

Im fairly new to Osu!mania, but i can play some patterns. I was wondering if anyone here could help me figure out the skill level i would be classed at? Sometimes I feel like a novice, and other times i feel like a beginner.
toastly
(I am by no means an expert so if I say something completely dumb or wrong please don't hold it against me. Also my star estimates are personal estimates from experience)

Un0fficial, the whole Beginner-Novice-Advanced-ET classification isn't 4 concrete stages, it's an entire spectrum. Beginners can play anywhere from 1 to low 3 stars, Novices can extend from 3 to high 4 or even 5 stars, Advanced is 4-6 stars and ET is anything else. I looked at your profile (sorry) and my guess is you're bridging Beginner/Novice. You're playing 1-2 star beatmaps, but highly excelling at them as far as accuracy goes.

You may feel that you're switching between them due to a bad performance, which happens to most of us. Also, keep in mind different maps can have completely different patterns, some you're well acquainted with and some you've never seen before. It's important to pracitce those you haven't seen before, it helps you become a much better player, much quicker.

If you're looking to cement your status as a Novice, begin to practice some harder maps, going from 2-2.5 stars. They'll be harder and you're likely to get B's and C's when you first play them, perhaps even fail, but continue playing them and you'll see improvement. Keep track of the star count you excell at, pass at, and fail at, as star counts are a very solid guideline to go off of.

Sorry for writing a lot, probably a bit more than you were looking for. Remember, keep a positive attitude, and PRACTICE. Good luck!
PyaKura
yeah basically don't stick to stuff you're comfy playing. Most of the stuff I play I get low to mid B's and that's an everyday thing you get accustomed too, until that day you get an A and eventually S and you go "wow no shit I can't believe I was down there a few weeks/months ago"
Lolapops
As a new player myself this guide is very helpful. Given that i havn't read 17 pages of comments i thought i'd share my experience today.

Today i was given the advice that if i wanted to improve my game faster. I should stop playing autoconverts.
When i stopped playing autoconverts and only played !Mania maps for the fews hours i played today i can truely say that the advice was worth pure gold.

Personally i find the !Mania maps way more fun aswell as the patterns aren't boring compared to a lot of the autoconverts.

I'm not saying we should completely lay off the autoconverts. Maybe just have a more casual approach to the autoconverts and a more serious approach to the !Mania maps.

Please do correct me if i'm wrong! (I'm new afterall)

Cheers!

So, i have appeared to hit a wall. I can pass some very high two star maps, but when ever it has those fast patterns that have two notes at once, i lode it. Like when it goes like, middle left, two keys on the left, outside right, both outside keys. That completely throws me off. Is this completely normal, and is there a way to practice it effectively?

You'll have to play a lot more than 19 autoconverts to be be successful at IIDX maps.

Play mania specific beatmaps, play easier 7 key difficulties, play lots of them and work your way up.

also play 7K

In the skin.ini file, under [Mania], the value for ColumnStart tells the game how big the gap between the left edge of the window and the first column should be.

How to pass streams?

I'm really bad at streams and my friend gave me the https://osu.ppy.sh/s/147745 Candy Galy map.
The 4k HD is really brutal with almost unreadable 1/4 notes, but it's only 3.00 stars and only HD.
My friend told me to play a lot of those, but I cant even pass the HD.

I can play those chord thingies at about star rating 3.5-3.7, but I get destroyed by the 1/4 short notes.

What should I do to improve streams~~

EDIT: I play both 4k and 7k

Play more. If you get destroyed by streams from a certain star rating, play streams with slightly lower star ratings till you are able to hit most of them.

It's a sarcastic remark by him because osu mania doesn't offer a lot of high difficulty charts. He's considering osu!mania to be a 'baby's rhythm game', so to say. The 'real rhythm games' that he's referring to would be vsrgs like o2jam and lr2.
gintoki147
Is there an active 7/8k platform besides LR2?
O2Jam is fun, but its client is way too outdated and crappy.
Todestrieb
LR2 is still active, the BOFU is happening right now, It's more than thousands new songs. But yeah, there isn't any other game except some in dev. http://manbow.nothing.sh/event/event.cgi?action=List_def&event=104
PyaKura
He didn't say it is inactive though.

o2jam might be old school and crappy client-wise but as long as it is fun, who cares?

Let's see, I know agka's developing raindrop but afaik it's still pretty unfinished. Works though. You might wanna check out Malody, but I wouldn't really recommend it...

Not a 4k player, but I improved to the next difficulty via analyzing what is my most common problem in harder maps/maps in the difficulty I play atm. and try to get better at what gives me a hard time.
For example: layered LN's are a huge problem for me, so I played only maps with these patterns in them to get better at them.
Another tip would be: play harder maps on halftime and try to get high acc. and try to learn new or hard patterns.
If you play them map on normal speed later you'll have an easier time to play these patterns.
Last tip: play old maps and try to get higher acc. and combo.
I saw alot of your scores are A's. Try to get S ranks and maybe 97%acc plus.
It seems you're not ready to progress in harder difficulty when your baseskill on an easier difficulty is lacking.
Hope that helps somewhat.

Is it a good idea to bind keys to DFJKL in 5k, for example, or should i keep the default layout with space in it?
Bobbias
It's entirely up to you. In 5k that kind of layout doesn't have much disadvantage over a spacebar based layout. However, if you plan on learning 7k later, it might be a good idea to stick with the spacebar. It's certainly possible to be good at 7k using something like sdfghjk, but that layout requires a pinkie on one of your hands, and pinkies are much weaker than your other fingers, which puts you at a disadvantage.

In any case, it's totally up to you. There's no 'right' way to play mania.

You should just keep playing, with time you will do this a lot less. It's normal when you start. ;)

I personally found that playing with hidden helped me stop doing that. But while I could keep my eyes in place with hidden, the habit of looking lower would still come back a bit when playing without it.

Todestrieb wrote:

Begoul : Basically this. It is still too soon to draw any conclusions on your current playstyle since you have been playing for a few days at most. The way you read notes (and how you position yourself to play, hands and body, and a lot more) is most likely to improve as you keep playing. You can perhaps fiddle with the scrolling speed, and if you haven't done it yet, remember to use "Fixed BPM" scrolling speed and not the BPM-scaling one in the options (Just type "BPM" in the Options, you'll get what you are looking for.)
Begoul
Thank you all for the rapid answer . I use "Fixed BPM" only since 3 days I discover it , atm I set it to 17 but I will try to increase this value step by step .
Thanks

I've been at osu!mania for a while and I've hit a major wall due to the speed and I just cannot read fast enough, I usually do 1- 2.3 stars at 21 scroll speed but I can't do any more. One map that shows the gap is "time to air" on KK's 4K hyper difficulty. It's such a jump from previous speeds so I can't read it and I have tried every speed from 9 (too close together to read) up to 19 (much too fast for the difficulty).
The fastest I can go is Water Horizon on 4k basic. Any tips for improving on speed and anything that can bridge this huge gap in speed?
PyaKura
I am not exactly sure what you are asking for.

Do you mean that the song is simply too fast for you and the gap between notes is too narrow that even at a speed you're comfy with you cannot hit them? If so you should just play more and build up speed.

Or do you mean that you can't seem to find the right speed for you on this specific map? You're probably not using fixed scrolling speed. Go into the options, search for "bpm" and (un)tick the only setting that appears.

What I meant is the speed difference between <2.5 to 2.5+ is just such a big leap and I can't find any middle ground at all. I already set my scroll speed and it's currently 21 for 4k and 17 for 7k.
PyaKura
Star rating is not an accurate representation of actual difficulty, and has got nothing to do with the speed of a song. The best advice I could give you is trying to find slower songs that are still outside of your comfort zone, and try to climb up from there.

play slower scroll speed, seriously. you won't learn new patterns from high scroll speed and 21/17 is waaaay too fast for the level of charts you're playing.

try playing 7k with 10 scroll speed for a while. you'll see a lot of improvement after a week of playing.

I agree that slower scroll speeds help with getting used to the patterns at a low level, but scroll speed 10 sounds awfully slow to me. Maybe 15? (considering that this is a fixed scale of course)

i'm a noob and i read/play better at speed 25 than 20 :/

is this thread still active?? i want ask question :)
Bobbias
Yes, it's still active. The problem is that most people who want to ask questions that should be in this thread never read the thread and post new threads in the forum instead. It's much better if you ask here rather than make a new thread.

ok my question is:

is that normal if you play a map in one day you get S and the next day you get B (it happens to me most)?? ._.

Yes, you have to get warmed up properly and that's not possible every day if you for example don't sleep well the night before or have bad eating habits, or stress from work etc.

wow thx for the response :)

if i play hard map everyday(out of my safe zone) is that help me improve??
PyaKura
This is how most players proceed to improve, yes. By playing maps that are a bit too hard for you regularly will most likely help you improve.
M0STW4NT3D
do you guys have any tips faster improvement on reading notes i'm stuck at 5* diff and can't proceed more ._.??
Bobbias
Try to figure out EXACTLY what is causing the problem and find a solution. For example, sometimes all you need to do is increase your scroll rate and patterns that were hard to read become easier. But sometimes that's not the solution, because the problem was not that the notes were just too close together. This solution is much harder to do, and it's hard to find anyone who can help you figure it out, but it's BY FAR the most effective way to improve.

While you're trying to figure out the exact problem, you can also try things like:
Practice maps that are a little bit too hard for you.
Try using a slower scroll rate (on songs that are not too hard) to try to get better at reading more dense patterns.
etc.

There is no trick that can suddenly make you much better at rhythm games. The most effective way to improve is just to keep playing.

omg it looks interesting

I have a lot to learn...

I really need help with Sliders. Started playing for 3 days now and I havent got a single 300 (max) or reg 300 slider. I thought maybe I gotta press a other button and the same time or something but nope. Im not sure if increasing the speed would do it (possibly).
Tips?

Play songs that have longnotes that end at the same time with another note and practice lifting your finger right as you tap down another on the same hand.

I found that this post really helped me to improve in mania. I also made some friends along the way who are the same rank :3

This guide is so true i'm actually a 4K player I want to practice other keys but its getting hard... I so much improve in 4k but suck in other keys... I dont know if I follow this guide I will be good, bcoz I already started playing without reading this for almost a year now. But I think this guide will be good for people who starting mania but for someone who starts playing already it will be hard :))
