Project Restarted (!!). TODO: Redo description and add songs on a weekly basis
April 6 2014: I cannot update this week. I'll be going on vacation for a couple of days orz (plus I feel lazy. Been mapping another map @@)

The aim of this thread is to help and guide mania players in improving their skills. A lot of people are asking what songs they should play first, and/or what song is good enough for them to improve their skills, so I decided to make a list of mania songs and organized them in a way I see fit.

(For a discussion on how to improve/play osu!mania, please see this thread by Drace: t/146615)

I divided the difficulties into 4 categories. Beginner, Novice, Advance, and Expert.

For the difficulties, I have spread the difficulties into 10 levels each. For now, I (along with Louis) have created a list of Beginner difficulty that only contains ranked maps and some acceptable maps.

Do take note that the list will only contain maps I feel good enough to be played by people, and that will include unranked maps as well, as long as it is of good quality.

More songs will be added in the list as time passes by, and you can suggest songs to be added in this thread. If you also feel that the some songs are placed wrong, please do point it out, along with the reason, so we can fix it.

NOTE: No more choosing maps to be added on the list or something like that. I will be adding everything on a weekly basis. I'll just tag new maps, and maps that I like or something. Maps that I recommend to be played.

BEGINNER
SPOILER
This difficulty is for players who are just starting, or have little experience in the game. The players at this level know (or is starting to know) which key is which, and knows (or is starting to know) how to hit the notes accurately. They can also play songs with simple to no patterns.

Songs at this level mostly are noted one instrument at a time, and the maps are easily readable.

Songs at this level are starting to have layers in them, having notes mapped at different instrument, and basic complex patterns starts to surface. The songs could be simple in pattern but has a high note density, or it could have a complex pattern appropriate for novice players, but has a low note density.

Players at this level starts to learn about specialized patterns. At this level, the type of players starts to branch out. EXPERT New!
SPOILER
This difficulty is for players who have achieved mastery of the simple patterns, and has a large experience with complex and unique patterns.

At the time of writing (August 8, 2013), ranked osu!mania maps do not have what I consider an "Expert" difficulty. Until more maps suitable for "Experts" are available, the list for expert will be kept blank.

If you think you are in the Expert category or higher, you can find some un-uploaded maps of higher difficulties often shared in #osumania. In addition, other generous osu!mania players have converted challenging maps for you to play (See Drace's thread).

ET
SPOILER
This is where the real thing starts. Expert difficulty songs are becoming boring to you, and you want more. This difficulty is for players who are on their way to the top. ET players are good in every common pattern you can find.

In this difficulty, the things you learned in Expert stages begins to form a whole new concept in ET songs.

Changelog:
SPOILER
August 13 2013: I can't update the list this week. Sorry.

September 23 2013: I have partially added Jin Xero's suggestions to the list (Unlinked yet)

November 6 2013: I have (again) partially added Jin Xero's suggestions to the list. Some are linked, but some are not yet. I still haven't checked them yet, but I trust Jin Xero's list. They may get changed soon though. Also applied some of the suggestions (Hanyuu, PyaKura, and Crimat). Will add the other ranked maps soon.

March 30 2014: Restarted Project. This time I'll just add all songs. I will be adding songs on a weekly basis starting today. (Every Sunday)

  1. The most important thing for this thread is PLAYER FEEDBACK. So far, Entozer and I have reviewed each map to see if they are good enough for playing, and discussed to decide the "level" of the map. As hard as we try to accurately measure the difficulties, they'll always be subjective and prone to error. By having the community comment on errors, we can make this list as accurate as possible.
  2. As our mappool grows, it becomes harder to keep track of each and every map. If you notice any errors such as incorrect spelling or broken links, please tell us, and we'll try our best to fix them. If any of these maps are deleted, we'll try our best to contact the mapper, and obtain their permission to re-upload to Dropbox.
  3. If you see your map listed here, and you plan to make major changes to it (including deleting), please let us know if possible. It's not necessary, but it definitely saves a lot of time and effort.
  4. We appreciate map suggestions!

Very interesting ^^

Something like this is very helpful to orientate players when the difficulty criteria are all over the place. It could easily push them to set up goals and ultimately increase their improvement rate.

Great idea

Thank you very much for this thread. Have been searching for something like this. :)

Can I put a link of this thread in my userpage? This is a great help to people who want to try some mania :D

Of course! Please do. It'll be great if we can get more people to notice this :)

Stumbled onto this thread today and I have to say, that it has been a great help already. Thank you!
milky228_old
This is exactly what I needed. The rating system for Osu!mania is all over the place, I can SS 5* maps but only B 2* maps. I'm looking forward to the release of the novice collection, thanks for the thread.

Yes. Like Louis said, please do!

I have updated the list; adding an incomplete novice section and included the newly ranked mania song in the list.

The novice list was quite hard to put together, so there might be some errors in it. The songs might be misplaced as "harder" or "easier" than other songs. If anyone has found some inconsistencies or anything alike, please post in this thread \o/

Drace, Taadashi, vahetpole, and milky228. Thanks for the feedback! We appreciate it no matter how small it is.

I have myself made a difficulty level list upon someone's request. Maybe it would be a great help here.

If you think that this would help, I would upload it somewhere :)

I've got a question about the list or well, 2 questions actually:

1. When would be a good time to move on from one song to the next one? Once you get FC or something like that?

2. Have you listed the songs difficulty-wise in the sub-categories. For example in Novice 10, are the songs difficulty sorted from easiest at the top to hardest at the bottom?

Thanks. :)
Bobbias
You don't have to practice to some certain skill level to move on. The idea for this is to give you an idea of how hard these maps are in a detailed scale. Personally, I try to find the maps that I can barely pass, or even maps that I fail, and practice on that stuff, rather than stuff I can A, or S, or FC.

And how does that work for you? Just a question of interest. :P
Bobbias
Well I just broke a skill barrier, thanks to this playthrough of an o2jam chart I converted. It seems to be the fastest way I've found to learn things. But it also means your accuracy suffers on easier stuff. In my experience anyway.

Ah I actually went and watched that on your youtube channel right before you posted, haha. Great play, bro! :)

And also thanks for your answer, think I'm going to try that method out a little on 86 degrees (hard), which I currently only C (in rare occassions B). :)

1) Just as Bobbias said, the list is just to give people an idea on how hard the maps are, so you don't have to drill/train in the maps before you move on.

It would be a good time to move on the next level if you can "pass" the map in your own standards. Personally I only consider my plays a pass once I can have less than 10% (miss + 50s), since the HP drain varies from one map to another. A rough indicator of a pass would be a B or above score in the maps.

2) The songs are not listed in any difficulty order in the sub-categories. Though they might vary in patterns and density, they are considered as a part of that sub-category since the specific skill needed to play those song is of "Novice 10" difficulty.

If a person is good in streams and stairs, they might think a Hold-oriented NOV10 map is hard, but the same goes the other way. The list can hopefully balance the skills of the player (But right now, there are so few ranked maps that the distribution isn't even good x_x)

In higher categories, this difference in patterns of the song will become more noticeable.

If you feel there are songs listed wrong in the sub-categories, please point it out, even if it's just a hunch.

Yes please! This would help a lot in adding more songs in the list.

Edit: Updated the novice list.

Do you really want to maintain such a huge list?
This will be a lot of work. Where is Ende?

Let's see how big of a list we can make first. These are just suggestions, and we're not aiming to put every map that ever existed here. (now THAT would be a lot of work)
In order to minimize maintenance necessity, we're mainly aiming for listing ranked maps, as well as relying on the community to find errors here and there.
It shouldn't be much effort to re-upload a map with permission, or fix level ratings of a certain map, even if both Entozer and I become inactive users.

And by the time that happens, this thread will be long outdated, and hopefully, someone else will be willing to maintain it in our place.

Omg first map suggestion. We'll check Ende soon.
Bobbias
Yeah, I see this being incredibly helpful for now, but dropping off in usefulness as mania matures. But for the time being, this should be a great pace to send newcomers to find stuff.
God of Taiko
This is very helful! I was loking for something like tbt and this is just perfect, currently Novice ;w;
