It's very similar to the lurk more idea. Older users expect newer users to simply get good and figure shit out on their own. It pretty much pushes all responsibility to the new guy, but someone that can show himself the ropes is probably better off than someone that can't. Those that can't usually just get told to fuck off until the situation changes, even if everyone is trying to absolve themselves from any work or responsibility. This doesn't always work out since the whole thing is based off of a pecking order, encouraging elitism beyond more than just old > new, which leads to a lot of bitching and whining. Bottom line is that they'll tend to place themselves above strangers.
Not that it's a bad thing in itself, but when you're dealing with stressful things all the time, most people will probably blow it off online through games and such.
