Square formations, eh?

Nominating Modified Square Formations.

Take a square formation but rearrange the order of notes such that at least one pair of notes are joined diagonally.

Examples:
  1. Laura Jane - La La [Sweatin'] (iNiS)
  2. Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Nights in Blue [Normal] (MetalMario201)

A slider that cuts through the previous slider to make a sort of cross shape.

If you want another map that used it La Roux - Colourless Colour on panic and relaxed is an good example.

Hehe. It's been a while since someone nominate some mapping techinique. I would like to nominate 2 techniques that I personally very like to use and they are present in almost all my maps. xD

Nomination 1 : Finish Jump

Basically means a jump usually at the end of a combo/lyric to emphasize the "power" of that music part. Usually a triangle jump or horizontal jump, and it fits the music well. Used widely, and I am not sure whether it has been nominated before or not...

Picture example are from my map V -conclusion- and Maze, respectively...



Example :
gdeath uses quite a lot of this technique
eufonius - Wonder -> Challenging difficulty
Shimotsuki Haruka - Kyouri Haruka -> Hard difficulty

Alace too
(a lot of his maps use such technique)

And of course I used it in my maps too...

Nomination 2 : Arch Jump

Well, the original typical linear arch jump.


Modified version of arch jump used in my map. *example, -V- conclusion*
This one is inverted/modified arch jump

*An alternation of 1/2 sliders and 1/4th notes that causes the player to feel like they're losing control (or floating) while trying to alternate between holding the sliders and clicking the faux-streams.

I nominate slider-tick hitsounds (TickSounds?). A lot of people love them, a lot of people hate them. I want to find out where the majority stands.
Only problem is a screenshot doesn't accurately depict them.

Tick-Sounds - A slider tick that has been replaced with a standard hitsound (clap, whistle, finish - usually overlayed with hit-normal/soft for accurate sound)

That hitsound in slider technique is great for constant claps.

Custom samplesets change the way you structure your hitsounds in the map. Depending on the sounds used, this can expand the potential for quality hitsound usage. And good hitsounds can make the player feel more like they're part of the music, which is what the game is all about.

Graphic skinning doesn't affect the mapping in the same way.

I don't know about these. They are VERY unintuitive, and I haven't seen them around lately. And non-2x slider speed changes might be coming out, meaning these would just be retarded.


Also people, please post maps by two DIFFERENT USERS, this isn't "rate the style". Might open that up later.
I'll excuse the ones that have been nominated right now, as I know of a tonne of maps with those techniques (i think)

I would like to nominate Differential Stacks

Basically stacks that consist of notes spaced apart inconsistently from each other in the timeline.
Some sightreading required unless you can really follow the music. Very challenging in hidden.

No; Kanbu deathstreams are Kanbu deathstreams. Kanbu's normal streams are different from her deathstreams. The deathstreams contain shit amounts of sliders, or contain confusing rhythm patterns.

"Alternating" probably works in both senses; alternating circles/sliders; alternating mouse buttons/keys/whatever. It probably just feels like floating to me since I'm a tablet user and am probably floating my stylus around and only using the keyboard of something :V

Crumpled Sliders

Basically, a slider that has a linear setting and uses control points to squash them up together in order to create a sort of crumpled or squashed effect, which in essence, make a slider seem shorter than it is supposed to be. These can come in various forms. Some well known ones are.

hiMMDivebomb Combos

(Props to MetalMario201 for the name)

Consists of a STRAIGHT line of combos travelling from somewhere near the top of the screen (or the middle) to somewhere near the bottom. The last note is almost always a slider. Divebomb combos vary in size.

can we assume that the beginning of the slider doesn't have to be part of the straight line? 'cause you mentioned "a STRAIGHT line of combos", but the beginning of the slider (in the provided screenshot) isn't in the straight line... thing...

I'd like to nominate Pre-spinner Notes

It's basically a note/end of slider directly before a spinner.
The note gives the "beat" while the spinner provides resolution to that beat.
The spinner usually follows 1/2, 1/3/ 1/4 or 1/6 after to not sound disjoint from the note.
In fact earlier maps just overlapped the note and the spinner.

It's like a slider but for longer time intervals.

Four circles placed one beat apart from each other in a diamond pattern along the four edges of the screen, which makes them jumps, albeit easy ones (unless the BPM is really high I guess). I call it QQ Diamond because it appears in like every kioukiou map ever.

I suppose a variation could be to swap the positions of the 2 and 3 in the above screenshot, but I rarely see that.

Sort of, but what you posted is a bunch of notes at 1/2 beat distance, and the circles themselves are very close together, so it plays totally different from the pattern I posted.

Basically, they are 4 notes set in an formation that makes the player "spin" clockwise (or CC) at a high speed. They are a bit similar to small jumps in distance and streams in reaction time. Therefore, the name tornado :3

I'd say that Tornados could be classified separately since they have a long duration of time (repeating). Also, it's even better when the pattern rotates/moves around (as seen in some Shinxyn maps). <3

Nominating another

Central Anti-jumps

A note/slider placed in the center of other notes and/or sliders but spaced the same in the timeline.
It's a more recognizable form of anti-jump I believe.

Art circle way are notes that form circular patterns???

I think most types of "art circle way" can be their own beat formation and mapping technique but idk

Looks awesome with high BPM and high velocity/slider speed.

A pattern of at least 5-6 circles placed in a way so the followpoints looks like a star.
Most commonly a jump but it can also be spaced.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Wizards In Winter[Insane]00:49:164 (1,2,3,4,5,6) - Earilest example I know
IOSYS - Poinsettia[Insane]Later part's of that difficulty is almost only that.
Susumu Hirasawa - Big Brother00:57:372 (1,2,3,4,5) , good example of a bit more closely spaced star formation and usage of 5 circles (5 circles is usually more common)
