Hey guys, Mr Color here coming in a little bit before this whole ordeal starts. As you guys know I'll be once more taking part in the play-by-play commentary for the event. I just wanted to introduce myself to the community once again in the middle of all the pre-cup drama. If you guys want to send me any pointers of things you feel I should mention on air about certain players, their strengths and weaknesses, as well as the maps that will be used, I will of course be studying up to offer the most insightful commentary possible, but I won't refuse a little help doing that, so by all means feel free to hit me up with a forum PM and I'll make sure to note down any interesting info you guys will send my way.

I would definitely like to see more countries represented, and have already discussed with loctav about extending the entry period to make sure those that haven't yet registered can.

Yup, we had a lot of countries with 2registrations, maybe we can PM them so that they can search for a third player ? We had registrations from 32 countries of so I guess we could easily gather more of them
The motivation is absolutely there (@Arrival) but all of them have either too less players (e.g. Ukraine), misunderstood the rules (e.g. Japan), don't have time (e.g. Netherlands) or their players got retired (e.g Russia). Some didn't even know about the TWC since they missed the information. So it's less about the motivation and more about the other things. I will also give a little transparency to you guys, so you are more certain about what has been done before (to come to Nashmuns suggestion):
I hope this could clear the air a bit. Will talk with Loctav about this.

Countries not having enough players are myths. A LOT of people doesn't want to register because they think they'll loose anyway. Along the year I've been told hundred of times that countries like Italy don't have any players and that we should allow multicountries team, and what do we see here ? An Italian team within the 16participant.
Even Hungary could gather a team because they had the motivation to, don't tell me countries like Russia/Ukraine/Brazil do not have enough player, I know by fact they have.

I absolutely agree with that. I've just put the information in a compact way. But even so, there is more than that sometimes - proud, certain rules, wrong view about mappools and more. There are more factors which effect the opinion of players in a country. I ecountered alot of them. So I think it is also about how we represent this TWC?
Well when you have the motivation you're able to find players (Please, Ukraine has 10 players in the Top #4K), or to find "time" (hey the whole NL team doesn't have the time, although all the other countries can register, really ?). As explained by peppy, we decided to extend the registration phase for another two weeks. Make sure to advertise this competition to your friends and everyone who is a potential candidate for your country's team

As by today, we extend the registration phase till 22nd February 2015, 23:59:59 UTC+0. Please send your forum PM titled "TWC Registration" to me till then. Please add your time zone to the message, so we can schedule you properly later.
All other parts of the tournaments will be, obviously, postponed according to this. We are sorry for the incovenience, but we want to make this TWC the best it can be.
As more countries and people are joining this competition, we are increasing the maximum number of teams. Whoever didn't appear on the team listing so far (Chile and Hungary) will be added later. We want to await more registrations from said countries.
How does the registration work exactly now?
- Everyone is signing up individually for their country by sending a forum PM to me.
- We roughly filter the registered users by their play performance and/or if they violated the osu! community rules (see below for details)
- Whenever we finished filtering the registered users, the players who passed will be put on a candidate list for their country
- The Tournament Management declares a captain from said list. This captain receives the list with the remaining candidates. Captains can freely pick from this list and found their team as they wish.
- After sending the Tournament Management the compiled team, your team has been successfully created.
What do you filter registered users by?
We filter by:
- Taiko performance ranking. Whoever has a global Taiko performance ranking below #8000 will be filtered out. While we want to let participate as many people as possible, the mappools are designed around a certain difficulty level. It's very likely that people below a performance ranking below #8000 will not be able to play the tournament's maps at all. If they improve, they are free to join!
- Violation of the community rules: https://osu.ppy.sh/wiki/Rules - In order to take part on any official tournament that is sponsored and organized by the osu!staff, you need to obey the community rules. Even though violating some of these specific rules do not lead to a full account ban immediately, we still exclude everyone who offended within the last year. This includes creating multi-accounts, sharing your account with others or using third-party software or other illegal software modifications. Not every rule is directly involved into the tournament outcome, but as long as you can not follow the community rules, we are not willing to let you join an official competition. We would like to mention that we have been holding that requirement up for several years already and have been performed these checks ever since then. This is nothing new and moreover nothing arbitrary. We just want to inform you again that joining the TWC has these requirements. If you ever want to compete in the TWC, we advise you to stop violating the rules now.

It could be a good safety net for some matches imo...
I think 3 backups is too much for just 3 players. Maybe with only 1 backup we could gather more teams where the entire team plays. This could even able 4+2 teams

Most of teams have a balanced roasters with a close rank gap between a players.

^ if a true 4k ranked player (just about his skill) plays the tournament and can barely clear simple Oni, it probably won't be that fun to play for him. Just like me playing some Firce Force difficulties, i honestly won't have fun doing it just because this is too far from my "skill" yet. pagliaccio maybe meant something like that.

If you think you need a team <#500 to play TWC then you are completely wrong, and Arrival is right, you are making TWC fails.
Keep in mind that if a majority of teams sign up with players 1-2k, all of these teams have more or less equal chances to get through group stage and win 1 or more match in knock-out stages.
No need to insult people and especially when your argumentation is pointless.

Well, people might be ignoring one simple fact which is that some people, despite their rank, don't enjoy this tournament.
Just because they don't, it doesn't mean other people from the same country are prohibited to join as well.

I don't get that line of logic. OWC is played for fun as well. There are several teams that join knowing full well they won't be able to win even if they do make it to the finals let alone semifinals. I'm playing TWC knowing full well it'd be pretty much impossible for team Canada to beat France or Japan (assuming they registered now), but I'm still going to play because it lets us see how we stack up against other countries while having fun.
You can still be competitive and have a good time while not expecting to win. Having a mindset that anyone attempting to do this shouldn't be playing would mean tournaments would never exist, because most of us know who the teams are that will win.
Not my goal to flame here but I feel genuinely sorry for your country if you aren't participating just because you won't win. That isn't the spirit of the tournament and you're only making the experience bad for yourself and others from your country who could otherwise enjoy the tournament and have fun.

Anyways going off on everything in this thread, I would love to play in the TWC but I can't because my countrymen are better than me! At least you have the opportunity to take part in an awesome event that many people are taking the time out of their day to run.
With that logic you're basically saying that African, North American, and Asian countries shouldn't even participate in the actual soccer world cup because they have little to no chance of winning. They play for the experience just as you should. I'm not trying to make you do anything, rather just offer a different perspective on how to look at playing in the TWC.
I also signed up at TWC , although I am still not great ability , at least I was able to participate in this tournament .

As it stands now, we have 23 registered rosters. Since this is an odd number, we have several way of how to structure the group stage.
Generally, letting 16 teams pass seems weird due to the low amount of competitiors. As we plan to only let 8 teams ascend to the double elimination stage, we have these options figured:

- We form 3 groups á 6 teams and 1 group á 5 teams, whereas the top 2 of every group ascends.
- We form 6 groups á 3 teams and 2 groups á 4 teams, whereas the top 1 ascends.
- We form 5 groups á 4 teams and 1 group á 3 teams, whereas the top 1 ascends + the best 2 2nd places across all groups.
Wow, why can't we have a regular 16teams brackets ? As for the three options I have no special preference but whatever you chose make sure you seed the teams before drawing.
The quality of the seeding heavily influences which of these options would be the most fair.

The only objective seeding would be determined by the average raw pp or average global rank of the entire team. Personally, I planned to seed the teams by the average raw pp.
Letting 16 of 23 (~70%) teams pass makes a group stage obsolete, as it serves to "prefilter" before we enter the actual load-heavy double elimination stage.Nashmun wrote:

i think the first option would be the best, that way you can still have a chance of getting through the group stage if you have one of the best teams in your group.
Yeah first or second seems better than the third one because best 2nd will depend too much on the actual group

Why not based on the three main participant instead ? That mean a team with 3 people ~#200 would be higher seeded than a team with 3players ~#100 and backups ~#500, which seems pretty odd to meLoctav wrote:

There is no such thing as "main participant". The idea or term of "backups" has been abolished 2 years ago. Everyone is an equal member of their team.

considering that only 8 teams are passing, I also agree that the first option is best because it provides you with the most chances of getting through group stages... especially if you play against asian teams every time you register for a tournament as i have... ;p

Some teams could actually be tempted to take fewer players if it can give them better seeds. (Not talking about our case)

With this it is more likely to get though the first round, if you had trouble in some matches. It also shows, how the two 2nd places could perform in the following matches, by comparing the matches they've played.
The first one is the middle way, which means it's acceptable, although it means that there are gonna be the risk of setting early winners. But if the matchmaking is based on raw pp it could go well.
With the second option to say is the worst. if it's only with 2 matches this would cause into enourmous pressure on the teams, and that every round literally decides about the end.
If it's with a rematch, it could be better, but still not good enough in comparison with option 1 and 3.

For the third one, if you have 2 big power house in the same group, one of them will be kicked easily, which makes the game less interesting
Second one is wrong. 6x3 +2x4 = 18+8 = 26 . Please work on your maths.
My own suggestion is
5 x 3 , 2 x 4 a total of 7 group
which 7 1st will promote, and the 2nd from the 2 groups of 4 will have an extra match which complete the last slot
The pros of this is letting the 2 groups of 4 , which should be harder to get the 1st, have a chance to come back

Uh, is there a country with only 2 registrants? Perhaps you can encourage that country to find a third qualified participant to even out the number of represented teams to 24.
First option ftw. More games for every team, makes it more fun. I think most participants would love to play as many countries, too.
