Is the game harder when muted?

Hiya,
I just restarted playing Osu a couple of days ago and can do beginnerish maps I guess or anything < 3 stars. However, for every other game I play I constantly mute all sounds, and I've been doing that with Osu. However, I am finding that I am having trouble hitting ?streams? on some of the more difficult maps. Will playing with the sound on make it easier to keep up with the tempo?

Are there any other disadvantages to playing on mute?
Thanks!

It's a rhythm game, so without the music it'd be hard to hit notes accurately. There's a buttload more disadvantages, but I honestly don't think they're worth mentioning, they should be quite self-explanatory.

Of course you are going to have trouble keeping the rhythm without your sounds! You should definitely play with sounds from now on and even get a skin with nice hitsounds that you can hear. Playing on mute is basically hindering yourself.

Er, regarding skins, how big of an impact do they have on playing? I've just been using the default thing

Why not just give it a try? And see for yourself what's easier/harder.

Some skins have no combo bursts, giving a clear play area ; they also may come with invisible 300 notes, which means your screen is also less cluttered. Otherwise, they're just good visually - I use a darker skin because I play at night, on a not-so-bright monitor, and don't want my eyes to die out of all the flashes.

IMO there are so many disadvantages to playing with mute and not really any advantage I can think of.

I'll just list a few off the top of my head:
-Your accuracy will be poor, as the only way you can judge when to hit a note is by approach circles, which you may even find yourself ignoring one day as you get to harder maps.
-If you 50/100, you'll be unable to tell by sound whether you hit too early or too late, since you won't be able to hear any hitsounds compared to the music.
-You will be unable to instinctively tell when the song will get harder/faster (slider velocity will increase, more intensity in the map in general) because you won't tell when the chorus or the 'high point' of the song is coming up.
-Not being able to distinguish the BPM will also result in poor accuracy, as even if you may have an idea of the BPM in your mind, it's often too fast or too slow.
-A bunch more I'm too lazy to list.
-Also, clicking circles just because they're there sounds kind of boring, y'know? The addition of music is a part of what makes this game so great (it's a rhythm game, after all).

You may be able to do Easys/Normals without sound, but you'll find the disadvantages I listed above will become extremely prominent and impossible to play with as you move on to harder maps.

Honestly you can give mute a try, but I really don't recommend it. It would surely be interesting however if you were able to advance pretty efficiently playing without sound.

As a beginner, they probably won't make a huge difference. Playing at a high level the quality of your skin is much more important, especially for playing with hidden.

That's a hilarious idea, actually. I should try that sometime.

Such joke post
Playing on mute is just a "stunt", making it unnecessarily hard... But not too hard still, if you can keep your internal BPM and utilize approach circles.

What is sad is that a lot of maps are actually very plain in general, and a lot of them will fit in with another song as long as they have similar bpm

also from natsumerin's profile

It's much the same with most songs with the same beat pattern and signature. You can in theory map to sounds that aren't there. That way your map is not only not fitting to songs of the same bpm, but the song itself.

Also, this thread shouldn't exist. It's painfully fucking obvious that a game that requires timing to music is easier with a backing track, even if it is only used like a metronome.

Playing osu with muted sounds is like peeing with closed eyes

I personally don't notice much difference between playing muted/ un-muted if I'm not spamming. Most songs that I can't pass muted, I can barely pass un-muted.

It's actually not that bad playing muted, I don't see too much of a difference. But nonetheless it is harder still.

Challenge accepted.

Unless you play at your optimial AR, then yes, it will be a lot more difficult.

You'd be surprised how hard it is to keep a slow beat with high OD.

Without music is one thing, completely muted is a whole different feeling, because you lack the hitsounds as well.

@Topic Playing the game muted will probably make you rely on approach circles so much you'll kill yourself later.
