Actually playing mainly to improve after getting a tablet had me able to SS and S insane maps in 2 months (i'm lazy as fuck though and not nearly as committed as all these kids playing), and buying the black widow keyboard has me able to stream really well after a few months (and even stream kinda fast, not that fast though).

I lose skill rapidly if i don't keep playing :(. It's really annoying.

key for success: Play with a tablet for 5 hours or so once you get it, instantly use a big area (look at like M A I D's profile to see for example) play easy maps whatever you gotta do to get used to it. Once you do just start doing insanes/hards, your skill will increase super rapidly.

Main thing I noticed when I got a tablet is that I was instantly really good at spinning (430-460+).

The effort required to play with a tablet is like 1/15th of a mouse. And I love using the mouse, i play all kinds of fps games, good aim good reactions etc, always a top player in whatever game but osu! is just perfect for a pen tablet.

TLDR: buy a tablet if you like this game and don't have the irrational tablet hating mentality because you can't afford one. orz

Tablet area is highly relative to each players preference. I started with a small area but my friend made me change to full area because he said I'd play better. I was struggling with jumps for many months until I decided to try my original tiny area and bam after 4 hours of practice I went from having trouble fcing nomod insanes to fcing insanes with hdhr (which I had never done before that, ever).

I think niko gave the advise that you should pick the area you feel comfortable with reached the ends of the screen with.

1 week as soon as I upgraded my mouse. LOL

Wow :o I feel kinda bad I have almost 9k plays and still I get mostly B/C ratings on insanes, I even have d ratings on some streamy maps(I stream like shit on some maps getting only 50/100s =s) And there are still alot of harder insanes i cant pas even after 50+ plays on the map^^
Stop playing maps you can get a good score on and play maps that you can barely pass. You'll improve loads in no time.

After 1800 plays I'm able to pass easy insane Maps. Like this http://osu.ppy.sh/s/44132 or this http://osu.ppy.sh/s/43698
tokaku
After 11k plays I could FC insane maps without doing much. What I do is play maps slightly harder than my level. This way I slowly progress up. Jumping right into really insane songs with no fail would just make me panic and go around smashing my keyboard which isn't a good habit or thing to have when playing Osu. I'd turn on half time if it's too fast.
SkylXTumn
Hmm... About 800+ plays or so for me, I started being able to do easier insanes, how 'easy' they are exactly... Now at 1.2k plays, I play mostly insanes only, can't pass the ar9 hard ones etc, but I've been doing decently on quite a few ar8's. Hoping to pass maps like Wahrheit by 2k-2.5k plays!

Also was when I switched off mouse accel, turned it to 6/11 and put 1.7x on Osu. :D (I don't get how people play with 1.0x, it just doesn't sync with me, I feel most comfortable on 1.7x)
Jerome
About 2500 plays before I can do most insanes, though not the really hard ones (like in the World Cup).

At 2500 plays with the mouse I was doing hard songs no problem but insanes were a bit hard. Then I bought the tablet, and 20 plays later I was doing insanes without problem.
zquiller
If you really try and practice every day, you can complete some Insane maps in rank 60K, that's like the minimum rank I guess...hehe
Multtari
Easy: Skipped
Normals: Starter, HR before going into hards
Hards: A bit over three weeks since starter
Easy insanes: Week or two later so 4-5 weeks since starter
AR9 insanes: 6 weeks

Can't remember the ranks, started doing video collection since starting this game though i played about 200 plays in 2011 but it was like starting all fresh.

1 month of playing, 3700 playcount and the best i can do atm is fc this song:
http://osu.ppy.sh/b/86324&m=0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrCcFqI3-2k (Footage of song not actually by me, credit goes to the maker)

Mostly get b's and c's but the occasional a's if i practise the beatmaps hard enough.

Also, i found osu sorta my reaction time in cricket as well, and im able to react more quickly to fast bowlers.
Xyrax Alaria
After my first 24 hours of playing I was able to pass hards, then after about 2 weeks or so I was able to pass insanes. Getting past the SUPER hard songs like Scarlet Rose / Freedom Dive takes a long time.

Just have fun playing and take your time! :D

I still havent FC that map.

wtf it took me 11k plays to consistently beat insanes. :\
BasedGod
Let's just ignore the fact that he ''FC'' it.
AegisFTW
I think by "FCing" it I think he means passing it, or just flat out lying.

Aside from that, I first started insanes around 5k-7.5k plays and I believe I first FC of an insane was this beatmap first or second try,https://osu.ppy.sh/s/71561 on accident around 10k plays at 70k rank before PPv2.

I had no idea how I FC'd it, I was just planning on raising my combo from 300x to whatever that's higher, then I ended up with a 986x with an S rank. From present perspective the beatmap is really easy and I could do it again with a higher % or hidden, but back then I was amazed at myself and watched my replay ten times.

Never bothered SSing it? xD

OT: Probably around 5-10k plays is when I started playing them, only started FCing them with decent accuracy near the end of 2013, so probably 13-15k ish.
NotCookie_old
Took me probably 1-2k plays (or 1 month) to start playing/passing 'Insanes'.

vsprite hasn't FC'd that song online. buny definitely hasn't FC'd that either. That song is too hard for NZ, i think it should be nerfed
Me168
~3.75K Plays for me was about when I started to pass Insanes

That doesn't mean that I'm great at them (Actual Shit Tier Player here. Woo!), to get good at them takes a bunch more plays

How about going to your local rankings, clicking the score, saving the replay and puushing it here?
Blueprint
About a month and a half, I think the only song I have fc If I even have is " look at my horse" LOL
Skriggniichan
It only took close to 2 months before I could start playing AR9 Insanes. I don't see why people find AR9 so hard if it doesn't take much time at all to get comfortable with.

On a more "you" note: You're doing fine in terms of improvement and should be able to continue to improve at a healthy rate(hopefully). Don't hit the brick wall of stop-that-improvement-this-instant.
jaaakb
1-2 months, ~4000 plays to pass. I used to play a lot of songs a lot with nofail, stuff I could read/hit to some extent without randomly spamming (65+acc or something). I started fcing some easier insanes 3 months, ~7000 plays in.

At this playcount (5K) I can pass insanes sometimes on my first try, but to FC I need to play the map a little bit more
Blaziken
Stuck on hards for 2 years (Had mouse acceleration on)
Bought a tablet
Passing insanes with no effort half an hour later.

Vasta
Passing since 2.4k plays
B1rd
Don't know how many plays but just yesterday I woke up and suddenly was able to pass insane ar9 songs :D . So a bit over 4 months.

Since 2.5k plays.

been spamming nofail on insanes desperately trying to pass since playcount 1 actually

almost there
limee_old
Consistently passing insanes that are rate about 40 TP at around 5k/6k plays. Personally, I don't think playing songs that are ridiculously hard are efficient at improving. Playing difficult songs above your level is necessary, but if you fail in the first 20 beats of the song even after around 5 retries then it's probably too hard and you should find something a little easier.
Maxis
Just moved to insane songs at around 3k plays, pretty decent imo.
Admittedly the harder insanes I usually can't pass still 'cause I'm a noob.
Genjitsu
From the first day I played osu! ? 4-5 months (or 6k plays)
Raz
Was able to pass insanes after about 3 weeks of pretty hardcore playing (4+ hrs daily because I was super addicted) which was probably around 1.3k-1.5k plays... They were lighter insanes though (http://osu.ppy.sh/s/68893 & http://osu.ppy.sh/s/83494) and i had played the maps like 5-10 times a day until i could pass them. I wasn't able to consistently pass 80% of insanes until like 6k-7k plays (about 2.5-3 months of playing)
Ethelon
~1k plays.
Took me less plays because I was doing at least 5 hour sessions (10 hours a few times).
Addiction is real.

After about 1.4k plays I could pass some really easy Insane songs. My top PP scores are from those few.

Still can't pass Insane diffs (specifically ones with Ar 9) :? My user page will tell you how long I've been playing, haha...

After around 1.5k plays I could pass ~2.5 star insanes. Still really bad at this game.

After 1.5k play I started to pass some easy insane maps

when i was at about 2k i decided to up the dificulty quite a bit, more or less froce it, so i downloaded the first thing i found to be hard and that happende to be NIRGILIS - SNOW KISS ... took about 200 replays (its still in my top played) but in the end i mangaed to complete it one morning. because of the high learning curve at the time and hours of closely studying of my teqnique i beacame more calm on the keybord and tablet (huion h610). im at 4.5k plays now and although insane songs arent exactly easy they beacame doable. curently im trying much faster songs (like Bermuda Loverz - My Girl (Nightcore Mix) - insane) and once in a while i find myself going much faster then i thought i could

i definaly DO NOT recommand this way of practice to everyone, slow and patient is one of the best way to learn, but i do want to stress that you should up the dificulty slightly once you are comfortable with your current standing (dont go crazy with the dificulty and being comfortable does not entale getting only S or SS ot a sertain BPM, it can be as close as geting As and holding up a long combo)

one more thing, do not play the game compatively. your rank should be an indication if your current skill level not an idntication of how many hours you strained your hand, enjoy the game and go at your own pace. Every one has potantial so keep playing and watch yourself grow, its alot more rewarding and enjoyable at the end of the day day

Have Fun

I have a few 2.5 ish insanes passed, first insane pass probably around 1.2k? ish?
Passing insanes doesn't help your PP very much though :(

I cleared insane maps around 1,000 plays, I guess that's kinda good but everyone is different. It might take me 1,000 but it took you 10,000, it doesn't mean one of us is better than the other.
WhiteRose
It took about... hmm... 1-2 months. I don't even remember how many plays I had.

Don't remember how many plays I had but I started to pass insanes after a month maybe, and fc easier ones in 3-4 months I think.

I can pass/FC some easy insanes and a few moderately fast ones right now. I'm at around 1.5k plays and I've been playing for roughly two months.

A month and a half
I think it's less, but I don't remember.
I know this sounds cliché, but I improved drastically after getting my tablet.
Rio-
Kinda remembered the time when I passed No, Thank You in Insane after ~1,5k play roughly 1 month
WAVEDASH
Definitely not 10k plays~
Kouya-
When I first started playing 3 months back, I only played Easy and sometimes Normal .

A month and a half after, I got my first S on a Hard Song .

Now, I mostly play Hard and Light/Moderate Insane Maps .

Reply got deleted and had to re-type it again, got lazy so summed it up ._.
Kumiho
1 week once i got my new mouse
KinkiN
I think i can pass "easy" Insanes on my lvl 70ish
vsprite
Passed my first insane around 3k plays, currently i can finish most insanes on at least A (The really hard ones i get B).

5.9k plays in just under 4 months, and the best i probably got is this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u80YhKG7aBA
beatmap - http://osu.ppy.sh/b/216133
Got a 313 combo on it with 95.87% accuracy and 3.4M score. This was also my first time playing it.

6k plays and i got a 637 combo, 95% accuracy with 9.2m score http://osu.ppy.sh/b/368933?m=0
SushiBottle
I started passing insanes at around 2.5-3k plays. Maybe less. I always played maps that were out of my skill level though, so maybe I just took a shortcut per se to get to the harder maps.

Recently I started getting perfect combos on insanes and I got my first 2 S ranks on insanes within the last week with around 5k plays ^_^

However, i'm not too sure about the accuracy of how many plays I actually have, since most of them are just me failing near the beginning many, many times (if you look at my historical) or failing an fc and restarting immediately. So in reality the plays may be less... oh and I'm currently siutting at around 5.8k~ plays.

You're right plays aren't a very good indication, in all honesty I don't think rank is a good indication either. It all depends on how long ago you started playing and how often you play, as well as what you are using (Mouse or tablet). Mouse has a slight disadvantage cause it takes longer to learn how to aim well... I started out with a mouse because I leaned of osu back when I was using a Mac so due to software limitations I couldn't use my tablet (h610) cause of the large work area, so I know that it is a bit more difficult, on the contrary I have a fiend who got into osu at the same time as me but he stuck to using a mouse and he is slightly bellow my skill level. What I'm pushing at is "how long and how often you play?" Is a much better indication of where you should be at... But at the end of the day this question becomes a "who has a bigger dong " contest :D Everybody should just go at their pace instead of comparing themselves to others (then again who doesn't like a thrill of a good contest)
LexiaLovesU
from when i started hmmm about 1 year and 8 months to properly do insane with mouse and when i switched to Touchscreen i can FC S pro Insanes and regular normal Insane with DT i also got really really good with jumps xD owo
Insyni
About 11k plays to barely pass an easy insane. I'm still struggling to pass most insanes at almost 15k plays.

Based upon my current progress I should be able to pass insanes at a more consistent rate when I reach 30k play-count.
B1rd
Still can't say that I can't finish all insanes (there's is even a "hard" that I can't complete...), even though I probably have near 10k plays. I'm not worried though, I'm determined to get good no matter how long it takes~
AnegelSeeker
i just completed the Hard on "Hommarju feat. Latte - masterpiece" and id say its about the "easy insane" difficulty, and i can blast through about 1/2 of the Insane difficulty... I'm at 5.2k plays and 6 months in osu (take away about 3 months due to slow activity) ... you can try the hard difficulty and it will give you a rough indication of where I'm personally at after 3 months of OSU!, playing every day for at least an hour a day.

That song is evil =P
I say that because I hate jumps.
I've been playing Osu! on and off for about year (with a mouse), before I decided to get a tablet and see what I can do. That kind of makes it difficult to judge when I passed my first Insane song, but I would guess it took under 3k plays (after I switched to a tablet). At this point, I have over 12k plays and can pass most Insane songs easily as long as they don't have too much jumps. I hate jumps with a passion. Its just pure torture for me =P

This is so true. Don't try to do the same thing as other people, or attempt to climb as fast as some other people if you really can't do it or if you're just pushing yourself way past your limits.

For me, I climbed relatively quickly only because I played everyday and challenged myself to fc something, or at least get a high combo, or even perhaps beat an x rated map or a very difficult insane rated map. At the end of the day its really just how people wanna approach the game and how they think they'll improve the fastest and there's not really just 1 or 2 ways set in stone for someone to improve. Just keep playing.

i could do easy insanes at 3 plays

fc'd scarlet rose DT FL HD at 15.
AnegelSeeker
One thing I keep forgetting to mention and ask about is AR... I can FC about 90% of AR 8 songs on my playlist and I can play most AR 9 songs unless they have long streams, my stamina is low due to medical issues so I can't keep a long stream going although I can press fast enough so I prefer jump hell to streams, so my question is, after playing osu for a wile what AR can you reliably complete (full or high combo) and because of the split into jump hell and streams at AR 9, which do you prefer jump hell or streams ?
Justin Cretible
After one month (around 2.5k plays) I was able to pass Refrain of the Lovely Great War on Lunatic, back when I still used a wireless mouse and membrane keyboard. Since I got a tablet I've been improving a lot faster.
PureHater
I started Insanes after ~1700 playcount, ive been playing a month, but ive been playing a lot of hours during that time because if too much free time,
and if i really want to pass insane, i just sit for 3 hours on the same map by failing at 5% then at 10% then 20.. blah blah blah
basically what ive noticed is you just need to play the map over and over until your eyes get used to the speed and thats it >: :D

might start at 2.50 but i dont see why because Expert starts at 3.51.

I'm at 2500~ plays right now and I can do like 10 insane maps most, with B, like 1 with A and the rest C. From someone who is a lot better than me, is that good?
YamiHikari
Depends, insanes can be like 3-5 stars now.
I started playing insanes around 4k playcount and up till now (7k playcount) i've been training on more and more 4 stars. Would say that now at 7k(or nearly) playcount I can pass whatever insanes as long as they don't have death streams. ?
FreshMint
took me 6 months on/off osu! for me to start *consistently* FCing insanes.(Around 12k playcount i think)
Athrun
Well, I'm getting better at insane songs, yet I still can't FC some of them since i have a crappy mouse which twitches if i don't place it properly.. I usually play hard songs with DT so yeah...
I Give Up
In the first month I could barely even fc hards. After I got new mouse I passed insane song within a few days. $pay2win
Frc
Lol, that means I probably suck, because i couldn´t face my first insanes until 2 months of playing.
B1rd
almost a year and still can't FC insanes for shit.
Kishidle
Started FCing insanes at 3-4k.
This was with Aero enabled, now that I actually turned it off now I can't FC anything ;w;
Nakano Itsuki
I can pretty much FC Insanes within a month or two... however since I didn't bother with Bootcamp I got lag spikes that broke my combos... ;_;

But I only passed Insanes only after I bought a tablet. Perhaps I wasn't built for mouse play after all. :P

Nah its possible to do insanes with mouse. hell, im mouse only and i do insanes
chainpullz
I've been playing strictly DT/HR for the last 5k (starting around 13k) plays and can't read ar9 well anymore but I can read AR8DT well and can read AR10 well (aside from minor issues with stacks and hidden notes) and can barely read AR8.5DT. AR10.3 is completely unreadable for me. I can barely follow even the easiest AR10.3 maps if I mash through them with shitty accuracy assuming I can even keep up with the bpm.
