I guess if more than 32 teams are registered something is gonna be done, since this is a World Cup I suppose stronger teams are gonna be of a higher priority.
I'm pretty much sure there were more than 28 applications from various countries but seems like "someone" is waiting for those 4 countries to fill the team list with them.
Soarezi
Or then they didnt join on purpose to give other countries a chance. Kappa
Mizucchiki
Without Korea and Japan it will be so not interresting ;_;
Wishy
Karuta already submitted the registration form for Japan, not complete but good enough to reserve the slot.

Doesn't that go against this...

The tournament will run with a total of 32 teams. First come, first serve.
fartownik
If there's no top4 teams in the game then the tournament doesn't make any sense. If I were the organizer I would reserve last 4 slots for them while they're still free.
Wishy
We are all assuming things, Loctav has the final word, might aswell just wait for him. :p
me3lingual
Another idea would be to let these "Top 4" teams have an automatic spot in the Knockout Stage. This would give more countries a chance to compete, at least in the Group Stage. And yet another would be to increase the amount of teams to 40. This would allow five teams per group. And then the top two from each group would move on to the Knockout Stage.

But by reserving slots for teams without prior knowledge to the rest of the countries considering entering seems shady. Because then the other countries are actually rushing to apply for one of 28 spots instead of the 32 stated in the registration rules.
Pizzicato
well, they're interesting to watch. it'd be a sad thing if they won't participate in this tournament
but the tournament can still run without them

I was serious when I proposed reserving slots for such teams as Japan or Korea.

If there's no Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan then this tournament shall not exist.

No, those would be apps or PMs that Loctav has but hasn't checked. Reserved is just no roster/one person or something. Maybe it will actually be competitive this time.

Some of those countries might not have enough players of high enough caliber to participate anyway.
Wishy
I wouldn't worry anyways, with Loctav we have kind of discussed what to do if something like that happens, because it would be seriously idiotic to have the best teams out of the World Cup.

Exceptions are cool. Looking forward to another short finals.

I think it would be cool if we had an elimination round by continent to decide which teams can go (like soccer world cup) but due to lack of time that wouldn't be possible

That idea came up but truth is it's a lot of work and there is no time to do such a thing. :(

It's not about being racist... The organizers are just afraid of the beast that is Bahrain, that's why they allowed noob countries like South Korea and Japan to participate instead.
I propose that Bahrain has a reserved slot in the finals of every upcoming OWC as a compensation.

So how will the streaming work this year? Will each streamer take turn, or will there be mirror (alternative) streams?

Also I just thought it'll be cool to invite guest commentators to fill the gap between matches (or downtimes) by talking about osu news, highlights and even community projects/tools... sort of like an osu!commercial break? xD

I'm putting this out here now so that I don't forget to post later. I know it's kind of early to talk about this =.=

Since all countries are settled now, we shorten the roster change deadline to the 23rd Oct 2013. After this deadline, you can not change your team settings anymore. After this deadline, all rosters get checked.

Please send me your final rosters via forum PM till the 23rd Oct 2013, 23:59:59 UTC.Any roster changes after this deadline can not be considered.

Colombia also sent late registration. It took us specifying the 8 players ... we did not have many chances to reach semifinal, but we wanted to try.
Until next year :/

EDIT: I suggest that next year the dates notify one week in advance. Also, just take a weekend (3 days) to the form submission.
It is surprising that Japan, Korea and Taiwan, have been the last to join, and it is sad that China has been left out.

I also support the suggestion of Blue Dragon than by continents, increase competitiveness in countries where although they have some good players, but they do not dare to participate because they know they will not win against the top Asians.
It would also be a good way to see that there are level regions.

The ideal system would make the top 32 teams play and let the rest out. Making a whole series of tournament to qualify would actually be quite a waste of time, and even if you do it by continent you will get all top teams qualify and end up in the same situation, only you made the good teams waste their time winning 9999999-0 against random teams. xd

Like it didn't revolve around it before haha

I hope next year there's a thorough set of requirements for countries to apply for a slot. Also as it was mentioned before in this topic, it would be a really good idea to either reserve slots for high tier countries or have them join in later during the tournament... just like the Eurovision Song Contest works. Quite effectively.
AmaiHachimitsu

I am actually thinking about reserving a slot for all countries that made it into the knock-out stage of the previous OWC. Means that everyone that ascends to knock-out stage has a reserved slot for the next years OWC.
Rest is first come firdt serve or maybe another metric (depending on ppv2)

Drop your opinions please

wasn't there talk of seeding countries or something like that? how about reserving slots for the top x seeded countries?
eldnl
I like it, because without the strongest teams this is not the same.
ToGlette
8 or 4 would be fine. 16 is too much for seed imo.
Hiryuu_old
I have an idea.
How about next years OWC there should be a requirement for the skill cap. Lets say there are certain songs picked out by the management that has a similarity of the difficulty for the maps that are going to be brought to the next years map pool. If people can pull off those off then they should be able to qualify for the tournament. On top of that, the countries that have the biggest population on this game could (doesn't have to) have reserved spots, due to the amount of players that there are in the country in example:Japan, China, US, Taiwan. They probably require more time in order to get their players chosen, that seems natural to me.
First come first serve is the most logical idea, since if the captains can't get their players chosen or to take action properly in a small duration, then it's their fault they didn't make it.
In all honest, I don't believe in the metric system, PP is already a disaster, I'm already assuming ppv2 is also going to be another calculation based system where people will figure out their way on how to farm those points just the way like the current system and the ranked score system was. Numbers don't always mean everything, it's about the skill that the player has.

A long lasting qualification metric can work, but I doubt that we can afford it. Especially considering that the other world cups are existent, too, the work load is immense and tbh I want to have some free-time and don't manage world cups the entire year (this goes even more for my fellow organizers and helping hands)
Please keep in mind that everything that involves manual organized matches are not working, since they can not be organized.
A map chart that has certain maps in it and not single players but countries could high rank on it could also work, but this requires a better metric than current pp. I want to wait for ppv2 before excluding the usage of ranking metrics.
Anyways reserving slots based on population seems weird to me. I think reserving slots by progress in previous owc works nicely, especially because winning group stage already rewards people even if they don't come far in the knock outs

You could afford it if you didn't make the same staff in charge of all of them with the same expectations of streams etc. Every iteration that ppv2 has went through has been worse than what is in place now so I wouldn't have high hopes. And if you'd like to allow reservations for countries that made it to the single elimination bracket, why was China not reserve, but replace a slot after all of them were taken? Also curious as to why would you change the roster deadline to a week earlier just because the slots filled up fast, unless you plan on moving the rest of the event earlier there is no reason to move this deadline earlier on short notice.
Gigo
I don't know if the organizers plan to increase the number of participating teams, so let's just say that the next OWC also has 32 teams. If that's the case, how about if the top 8 teams from this OWC have a reserved slot for the next one? Each of these 8 teams will be placed in one of the 8 groups in the next OWC, so they wouldn't meet each other in group stage. The rest of the teams will be selected on a "first-come-first-serve" basis.

Roster deadline and his eye problems probably.
ErunamoJAZZ
I consider 8 teams much. For me, with 4 teams is enough.

What yes it is most important is that it gives early warning before the registration dates. So big countries may make the choice of their best players, and not what we saw happen: Many countries waited until the weekend to send the registration, because of their internal competitions.

I am probably pointing out the obvious, but the tournament season was announced two months ago, though no exact date was declared.

osu! World Cup #4
Registration Phase: Mid - End of October 2013
Group Stage and Robin Round Stages: November 2013
Finals: Begin of December 2013
The teams had a rough idea as to when they would happen. So each individual country had plenty of time to determine who were represent them.

I think the best compromise is that all teams that reach the semifinals in OWC get a BYE for the next edition, it would at least ensure a spot for the cream of the crop.

I am talking about future. In this owc, no one got reserved slots

@Cxu it was a close race at the end. Due to an internal error, the Chinese sign-up disappeared but the revision history restored it. Figuring that out, China was like the 31st registree. (People should stop submitting their registration 15 times >_____>)
Vietnam was the 34th or something

@Amai everyone would get the trophy. Not only the captain, lol

@JappyBabes internal issues require it. If I don't shorten it, we will run out of time when releasing the schedules and then the cry out is even bigger.
The workload on certain things resulted in being higher than expected. We just need the definite rosters earlier. Most teams were able to arrange it (29/32 so far), so I think you can, too. I believe in you ;)

If you didn't prepare in advance, it's actually your own fault imo :(
You don't need a date to preset your country's team
Zare
honestly in order to reserve a spot you don't even need a prepared team. Might as well just pick 4 you know who will participate to get the spot. You can replace and add new players afterwards, can't you?
Oinari-sama
How about adding a Pre-Group Stage Try Out?

In order to keep it short, the Try Out will be Score based battle royal. The management can select a set of maps to test various types of skills and each team is required to play every maps in the pool. The Total Score of each team will be compared per map and given a Ranking Point. The teams will be ranked based on their total Ranking Points after completing the map pool.

The calculation of Ranking Points (rp) depends on the tournament management's system of choice and how much weighting they choose to put on a team's finish position. A very crude and simple example of Ranking Points is given below:
  1. 1st: +5 Ranking Points
  2. 2nd/3rd: +4
  3. 4th-10th: +3
  4. 11th-15th: +2
  5. 16th-25th: +1
  6. 26th and beyond: +0
This allows the Try Out to take place over a short time period (eg a weekend), since all you need is the team + a ref in each room to record the scores and there can be simultaneous try outs going at the same time. The rest are handled by spreadsheets.

The top 8 teams from the previous OWC can be seeded into the Group Stage so there will be 1 seeded team in each group + 3 teams through the Try Out.

Just a thought...
Imamoto
How about a tournament system ingame via osu! for the future OWC's. It could also be used for smaller tournaments between the OWC's. I think this would be a very good idea ^-^ You could organize every tournament ingame and i guess the competition value of this game would rise incredibly.
