i don't get the butthurt for all relationships

As Lolicore said, love comes unexpectedly. and if there is love, the person will be happy until love ends. Maybe he/she will suffer but hey, since when suffering is bad? Just learn from your mistakes and go on.
As i said before, this is not that much different for irl relationships.

Just don't call all of online relationships as fake relationships (which also happens in irl ones) just because it was a bad experience for you
Seph
Well apparently you can't remove the "it went bad for me so it will as well for everybody else" mentality from them :p

but yeah try and try until you succeed, right?
if you didn't get it the first try why're you stopping there? that just shows how weak of a person you are
when it didn't go right before then do better at the next, who knows you might get what you've always wanted if you keep on moving

Yeah, there are not that much people left who actually play osu! without actually talking to anyone.

This awesome guy Had not talked to a single soul since he started playing a year back or so and he's around rank 4k, last week I sent him a PM since he lived "nearby" and now WE'RE BFFS!
Why didn't he? He has no interests in anime/otaku culture or even songs similar to it. Only playing western maps lul.

I also know a few more just here in Sweden who have zero contact with others. Of course they aren't in majority, but still. :)

My point? There are people who play without talking to others.

My opinion on the whole matter: Try it out if you get the chance. It won't kill you and if you don't have anything better to do (which I know you don't, loser! :D ), why not give it a try? Chances are you'll have fun and pass your dead time faster. You might get hurt in the end but even so, I think it's worth it. You'll get over it with time no matter what the situation (unless severely extreme yandere shit is going on in your messed up little brain).

Pros: Fun
Pass dead time
Experience
A strong relationship no matter how you look at it

Cons: Might end up sad for a while

Go for it! 8-)

Since you're so certain of what love actually is, care to explain it for us in detail? What is love? What kind of love is real?

I'm neither for nor against ldrs, but this is silly.

love is when there are a lot of hearts surrounding you and your aura is pink or something

I can't explain what love is with words but there is so much difference, from my experience, (my experience, so THAT might be different for you) between falling in love IRL (even with it being unrequited) and having an online relationship. + In most distance relationships, specially if one lives in a different country than the other they know they most likely won't ever meet and, imo, that totally ruins the meaning of a "love relationship". imo.

Then that is simply not love. It only is love when the hopes of staying together with the person in the future actually exist and are higher than the uncertainty of meeting someone.

I believe it can work with 2 mature people who may be far at start but believe it may be possible for them to be together in the future and remove the "online" of it. I've seen cases like that workout from people in almost opposite spots in the globe.

But most cases of "online relationships" are more of shy awkward penguin teens who want to feel loved and will probably look back in embarassment.

embarrassing? oh pls my friend said ''I Love u baby so much muach :*" with a straight faces. I've seen people like that.

Don't know if he is serious about their relationship, but he did saying romantic things like that with straight faces. well but sometimes he smiles for a unknown reason. lol

if you are serious in online relationships, you end up living in this song

Maybe you will be with that person in the future, maybe you will have a good experience or suffer. in the end you will move on and it will be a sweet memory after 10+ years.

It's something that won't last.

If two people seriously identify with each other and are realistic, then it ought to last. Of course it's going to be harder when contact is so limited, but that sort of thing can happen in person if one or both of the couple have to travel for their living. I believe that the biggest struggle would be when a pair finally meet each other for a mere few weeks, or had to go long-distance after meeting first, which would make the separation too much to bear for most. That's why I think that these things need to take time and lots of careful planning.

Hell, it's certainly easier to find the ideal partner online, simply because one's scope is so limited within their area. I know nobody in person who would be able to handle half of what I'd confide in them, so I'd have to harbour a lot of damaging secrets. Besides that, I've never met anybody with whom I'd identify enough. That's why I'm happy enough to foster an online relationship until I can meet Jarby, because I know that nobody in my life would compare.

On or off the Internet, people can deceive others very easily and hide their flaws until they feel secure in the relationship. I believe that relationships here fail so much because people have unrealistic expectations or jump on each other impulsively. Aside from that, I know all too well how easy it is to become distracted from a person, with all of this community-based noise. It's not pleasant, but for me, it's worth dealing with it.

meh.
i have one.
it works nicely.
the only thing that really bothers me about it is talking to other people about it.
everyone's so dismissive of it, like it doesn't count for anything. >__>
not that i need anyone else's approval, but i think anyone would get frustrated if anytime someone asks YOU about YOUR relationship and you tell them and they just kind of blow it off or even worse, they flat out tell you it will never work when they know nothing about the situation at all lol.
skibblesx
Courtney pretty much summed up the universe.

Also it sucks not being able to have sex with them. Nudes don't always cut it yo.

finally someone tackled this issue

in my experience, surprisingly no one disagreed with me nor i did not receive anyone's disapproval when they knew I was in an online relationship; but of course some of my close friends and relatives joke about how the other person is just lying to me and that it won't work out and that he's cheating on me etc. it's a joke so I don't take it seriously, you just have to go with it up to some point.
The hardest part of being in an online relationship is telling people in real life that you're in one. It's so hard to tell what they're going to think about when they knew that you're with a person who you just met over the internet. It is kind of cowardly for me to worry about people's thoughts about my relationship but I just can't help myself but think that they're going to say 'omg you suck why are you with some random dude you met on the internet'. It's true, they don't know the WHOLE story, but not everyone's willing to sit down and listen to a story that happened over the net. I do tell people I have a boyfriend, that we're in an LDR, but when they ask how we met I just say 'through a friend'. Because of this, only my closest friends and relatives know the whole story.

why shouldn't online relationships work? When the right people come together then it works I'm sure. Two friends of mine have also know each other in osu! and what is next? They are happy together and have been living together as far as I see it.
most don't know, but online love can also be true love too. and of course most people think that it can't work because you can't see each other every day and blah blah ... but hey .. Distance relationship but proves how strong the love is right?
so I think it is also okay to have an online relationship and I were in one and I could say even it was hard but I feel the true love and I were really happy :D
yeah yeah I know blah blah

@Jazz I know that situation hehe

I don't mind the people who have them, good for them really.

I am not in any myself (despite what people might think HELLO MUMBLE USERS) and never been in any, regardless of my views on them. To me, it's not really a serious relationship unless there is an IRL meeting. Bit of a weird way to think, but that's how I see it.

However what I don't like is when it generates awful circlejerks, conflicts, and fights that explode in public -- that infuriates me. More than once I had to refrain myself from being very verbal about this to some people here.

They do work out though: BikdipOnABus, my favorite Let's Player, got married last year to another let's player, brynnagiadrosich, after they met each other through TVTropes and made a co-commentary LP of Majora's Mask (They fall in love during the LP and end up meeting each other IRL at the same time Bikdip completed the Anju&Kafei sidequest).

So it does happen, and it's quite the heartwarming story. link to the video

I think they're fine, I was in a LDR for 5 years. However, I feel it's easier to get complacent when dating online. Sometimes you can just become so busy with your own daily life that it's hard to make time for another person that's not physically there. As everyone else was saying, trust is the biggest thing when dating online. If you ever even start to doubt the other person the relationship might as well end there. There is no real way to win back trust when you're dating online, neither of you can prove you were doing something at some time. The trust you establish is almost completely blind, only from knowing how they interact with you, over the internet where there are no real consequences to if they say or do something wrong.

If you can't make an online relationship work, you then have no chance on working out an IRL one.

Based on what

I mean come on this is just an unreasonably stupid statement
GeeNX
It's weird, it's always good meeting IRL, I could say u can fake online, but IRL is the same. We're not on 1900 so, things progress and these kind of relations will become more and more normal so, why not. Everyone can try whatever they want.

But just, be aware of the risks of it, if you're a very good friend of her/him or whatever, know that if you break up you'll lose contact and you won't talk anymore, so think about it first if you want just be friends or not. That thing that "oh, if we ever break up we will still be friends, okay?" I think that happens in 0,1% of cases at least from the cases I know. nvm I am late at school

yeah i agree with lewa on this

don't say stuff like that without having any idea of what you're talking about

i've been in a few "real" relationships, and i have zero confidence in trying to make an "online relationship" work. i give zero fucks about them, i know nothing about them, and quite frankly i don't want to know anything about them.
