I've been watching Pokemon and all the mainstreams as a child, but I started to really get into anime when I saw Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni few years ago. I didn't know animes can have stories this good.
Armaggedon25
A friend referred me to Death Note, which was the first manga I've ever read. Soon after, the same person referred me to The World Ends With You, and looking up videos for that on Youtube led me to Lucky Star and it all sort of escalated from there.

It actually started with K-On! actually.
It was pretty popular in my school. afterward i read manga, found out about light novels
... read a lot of them, saw some visual novels... amv's and then i liked japanese music a lot afterwards.

i don't know if this is a common reason or not......
Being an otaku is so much fun!!!! :D

I've only watched anime casually ever since I saw G Gundam on Toonami, but that all changed when I finished watching Madoka Magica to pass time while my laptop was getting fixed. I started obsessing over the songs and OST for a while and kept up with every anime season since, then finally giving in to buying PVC figurines of my favorite characters.

tl;dr Madoka caused me to become an otaku.
Shiroki_old
Pokemon and Naruto! Well, at first I only thought of these as a cartoon =='' I think I started anime at fourth grade. I salute my sister for introducing anime to me *-* My first official anime was Skip Beat!!~ :3
SchokiEllen
As i was a Child i still watched Anime: My first anime was Inuyasha!
But i watched so much Animes! Like: Detective Conan, Kamikaze kaito jeanne, Ranma1/2, Pokemon and Digimon!
Then i started to draw a lot of anime. So i became an Otaku! Haha! <3

Depends what point you count as an Okatu.

If it was when I started getting into Anime, it was way back when I was like, 9 with Digimon.

If manga is the point, it's probobly, like, 14, reading Narto/Bleach/OP.

I'd classify myself as one for sure from 3 years ago, when I started getting into foruming more, anime music, less mainstream stuff, and, a while ago, Touhou.
Plus_old_1
Well... I like animu.

When I was very little, my brother used to watch lots of Shounen anime on TV... it was very natural for me to love anime

I loved anime until a point where I got into high school, then I shunned all anime and Japanese related stuff. This lasted one or two years. This period of time actually comes into my osu! career, some oldies here may recognize the times where I was like this ^^;

But now, I stopped trying to be someone different and accepting myself~ I love anime and touhou and everything Japanese

My story:
I first listened to Vocaloid, then I started reading Full Moon wo Sagashite, then I watched the anime (which I did not like) then I visited my cousins in California which one was an otaku, then I started reading manga. But soon eventually my friend told me to watch anime instead.

It's easier to get influenced if you grew up in the Mecca of otaku culture
Harp Note
When I was young, watching TV was one of things I liked the most, anime was a part of it, but I only could watch the typical anime series, but when I finally had access to internet I can say I had become an otaku D:
birra
cardcaptor sakura changed my life when i was a kid to be an otaku. though, i'm not thatkindof-otaku
mercedes2345
My friend introduced me to vocaloid, then crunchyroll.com and written a list of animes I should watch :)

lol then he's not likely to be posting here in the first place. Besides, Japanese "countryside" is a lot more advanced than you think.

A lot of mangaka are from the countryside too. Fujiko Fujio included.

EDIT: Fixed broken quote box

You're right, sir "yafutsufa" that not everyone grew up in japan is an otaku. Oinari explained it all, like Oinari said it's easier to get influenced when you grew up in japan. By the way, I'm not a "Sir".
pokemew1
My sister. ^w^ She was always watching Sailor Moon, Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2 so it just kind of rubbed off.
I didn't get extremely into anime until I got my first computer though ><
It's all kinda fuzzy on where I became a huge fan, but somewhere along those lines.
Now i'm super socially awkward and the internet is my safe haven! :D (I wouldn't have it any other way. >w>)
~Also taking Japanese classes :3~
