@Aqo: If you stream 180 bpm you can easy get at least 96% acc on pretty much every map within this bpm. And streaming 200 bpm for 50 notes is like.. not average at all.
New players improving really fast nowdays and it's logical because overall osu! players skill is constantly increases and even top players are still learning the game. So there're new crazy maps, new goals to reach.

I would say an average player is someone who can S/A "normal" insanes. Regardless of rank. Accuracy is a moot point because it will vary between tries, however to fulfill the above criteria, it should be around 94% at least.

ok, this is probably the best score I ever achieved. and streaming is kinda that what holds me back at getting any better at this game, but generally, if the map is not a deathstream and jumpcompilation: yes, yes it is easy for a player around my level and it should be even easier for others.

What we can do to estimate what "average" is is look at a large sampling of maps with a large amount of plays (500k minimum; over a million is ideal) and look at the amount of completed plays for each difficulty (or individual ranked scores if you aren't lazy). Note that due to people being able to record scores on separate difficulties, you have to look for huge "drop-offs" in the amount of completed plays between difficulty levels (hence why you want a large amount of plays).
With that method you should get around a Normal-Hardish difficulty level. Probably leaning a bit more towards Hard.

I never knew this topic would cause such a huge public disturbance. I guess that's what I get for not coming up with a clear guideline in determining what average means.

I'm probably the example of just slightly below average. The average player at least how I consider it to be is someone capable of beating most normal Insane levels and think things like the stream compilation are ridiculous and don't know why the hell people like to play shit like Renard. If you don't share this opinion you're above average. Eh maybe the average players play Renard nowadays. They probably miss a lot though.
If I had to guess, based on no evidence whatsoever, I'd guess that the average player's skill would have them playing maps in that Hard-Insane grey area. Lots of maps fall in that area, and it's a skill level anyone can get to without a lot of dedication.

I'd say that you are probably pretty average from a global standpoint. The majority of players just play for fun and don't care that much about becoming good, so they eventually cap out at a Hard-ish skill level. At least, that's what the statistics I mentioned earlier suggest - on maps with a large amount of plays there's often a big gap in the amount of completed plays between Hard and Insane - and it makes sense; there's a natural progression from Easy up to your average Hard, but to do Insanes you pretty much *have* to play a bunch of Insanes because they are their own beast. Since learning how to stream actually takes effort (*gasp* THE HORROR!) a lot of players just stick with what they can already do.

I seriously hate AR10, I can't read it fast enough, maybe 'cause of my low reaction time (200-250ms), maybe cause I really don't play HR that much, idk, but still I managed to get to rank ~800 and get good enough to compete with some friends of mine like Glazbom, Metro, and so on.

my reading of some of the higher AR's have at least improved though, and I do plan to learn streaming... but focusing on other stuff atm >_< ah well

People have different views on that, IMO comfortable is to be able to play AR10 with OD7 and get 95%+ acc. But this combination is almost never found in any beatmap, and the ones that are, are very difficult to keep up with... not a good test of comfort. AR10 maps are usually very difficult beatmaps, and turning on HR on a normal beatmap will set OD9 a lot of the time, hurting ones accuracy some more. Not to mention the CS shrink. It is not AR10 itself, but the things that naturally follow it's use.

I don't really know, someone told me that Airman was AR9, then he showed me this map: http://osu.ppy.sh/b/168486 and seriously I can't even read that fast enough to combo almost anything. If Airman is AR10 then what AR does that map has?

You're confusing reading AR to reading bpm. If you see a 290bpm AR10 map, it's most likely that you're having trouble planning ahead on the speed of objects that come out on 270bpm and not having trouble with the AR.
If you want to know if you can read AR10, just pick a random ranked map that you already FC'd, go into edit, change the AR to 10, see if it's still equally easy to FC for you.
(at the same time, that 290bpm AR10 map you had trouble reading will still be hard for you to read in any lower AR. In fact it will be even harder to read like that)

Airman is AR10. This map is also AR10. You can read Airman because AR10 works really well on this and because you played it many times

He can just read airman since it's only 200bpm and has trouble on that map since it's 290bpm and spits out objects at a much faster pace, which he has trouble to plan ahead on. Take Atama for example. Reading AR9 won't help you to read the 240bpm patterns, nor would reading AR8 alone help you read the 200bpm jumps on LKs' Flower Dance.

Yeah I still can't do that yet. Also, not a lot of people can even really do that properly. I would definitely consider that above average. As for the AR10 thing, most people have to play the map a few times before getting any sort of acceptable acc, including top ranked players. So in case of Airman, a dimmed or black background contrasts against the bright combo colors and is therefore easier to read for whatever reason (vision reflexes or something, I honestly don't know). Magia has combo colors that wont contrast against the background whether you dim it or delete it or do nothing to it. I know people are gonna call bullshit on me, but I'm pretty sure thats the main reason.

I don't think the average player is able to stream 180-220 bpm with 96% accuracy. I think the easy insane level is relatively correct. Don't forget that there are a lot of newbies in the community.

I've been playing Osu! since July and play fairly frequently. I got a raw PP of 2,525 (this really tells me nothing tbh

As a new player, I would probably set myself around the avarage/slightly above avarage of up and coming players. Looking at Aqu's list though, I would probably be somewhere in the middle of the pack if not behind. I continue to strive for becoming better, but even after a few months of Osu! and years of StepMania, reading AR10 isn't even anywhere on my list.
The maps he/she linked are way out of my league. The first time I tried them I died in mere seconds.

I can't stream for shit. And I don't understand Aqo's last condition. Many people consider me above average though. If anything my high BPM HD DT accuracy is what makes me special. But maybe I'm just overrated....
There are technically two different types of averages for osu! standard. If you average the active community, I think the average is going to be a lot higher. With the active/ inactive community, there are a lot of players who are (and this is all just speculation) presumably worse than the active players.
All in all I think those are all fair conditions for the average osu! standard skill level. I would maybe lower streaming ability average since I think that 200+ is a lot more uncommon than this thread may be suggesting.

Are you forgetting how many people play this game? If you are in the top 200.000 of the player rankings, you are above average already. Being able to FC a hard map puts you above average already, no matter what accuracy you have.
Not that being above average means much anyways. You generally aren't a relevant player unless you are in the top 98.168436% (roughly #2000 pp ranking or less)

today I learned most people are ranked so low that we completely ignore them for calculating the average skill level

That is statistically correct, but not in practice. You've got thousands of players that only show up for a couple of days or weeks filling up the bottom ranks, as well as alts and whatnot. The people listed on the Top 10 most underrated players forum are clearly out of the window. I would even say the top 2000 players on global pp rank are top players.
Not to brag or anything, but I personally consider myself as an above average player (not qualified to be called a pro yet). But who knows, I might actually be just an average player who played too many maps. =P
PP probably isn't a consistent enough way to tell what a person's skill level is. I'm currently ranked in the top 3000s, but I've lost to players in the 5000s and 9000s before in multiplayer matches.
So yea, I'd like to hear from the public what you feel is considered average these days.

Here are some pinpoints what I consider which is avg for osu! standard :3
* To be able to pass hard difficulty songs with full combo without much of a problem.
* PP area (not sure about the exact number but) #20k-30k or so

Well if you can easy play 160bpm maps you can say you're average, if you can play 180+ you're above average, and following more than 200 bpm depending on performance is good / pro.
Not to mention godlike class, starring: Cookiezi, Niko, rrtyui etc ;x

It really depends on if you're talking about the overall skill level, including casuals, or the skill level among core players. 'Cuz the latter's waaaaaay higher than the former (whooping Insanes VS playing average Hards).
The OP made it clear that they're asking for "overall" here, though, so if you did the stats I suggested earlier and then compensated for newbs you should land in the lower-to-middle Hard range (How well they do on these, though, is up for debate).
