Touhosu! / Dodge the Beat

I was going into this thinking the whole game would be the boss battles (no fodder enemies). You never know.

Another way for spinners to work could be like in touhou, where a timer appears and you have to do enough damage in the time limit for the bonus (or to clear the spinner). This way, the fast spinners can be done just by catching a few bullets on the enemy.

Sounds like a great idea. I imagine if I put on SuddenDeath and miss, I would see a spellcard in my face like Marisa's Master Spark or Mokou's Imperishable Shooting.

I remember thinking of something like this a while ago. Except my version was about dodging meteors. :P

Anyway, I don't know about the whole grazing thing (never played touhou), but I wonder if a system like Ikaruga would work. Some bullets would need to be avoided, while others would need to be collected.

I think its a better way if you played the song yourself and did it once and played it before, then save it as a replay. Then when playing tohosu, it will use the replay data to do the shooting arrangement. 300s will have a flower pattern shooting or something, then maybe 100s will have a circle shooting and then 50s will have like ... some other pattern and then for crosses, more bullets than others.

That doesn't seem like a good idea. That would make "Touhosu" far too dependent on a separate mode.

Although, thinking about it, the idea of the beats themselves being the source of the bullets does appeal to me. That sounds like it would work lovely.

Hmm sounds like an interesting idea.

Off topic: I myself would rather see a beatmania-ish game on osu! though.

I was thinking perhaps that every beat would spawn a simple to dodge wave of bullets, while the actual beat circles would spawn bullets in different patterns based off of their hit sound. One would be like a firework, one would be a more targeted spray, and so on and so forth. Spinners would be a wave of fast bullets (like the rainbow of bullets that are fired in touhou sometimes) that would take quick movements to dodge. The "Boss" would move to the X value of where the beat circles are located, and you would get points on a fixed rate if you were able to keep shooting the boss as he/she moved along the screen.

Sounds epic... the idea sounds alot like AudioSurfs dodging bad beats... or the crazy Touhou music syncs
The only issue I would think is.... how would it still keep true to a rythmn game. Otherwise... you would have my vote...

Dunno how standard osu maps would convert into Touhousu maps but I support this~! :D
Perhaps it can be like CTB and give the player the ability to change the character sprite.

- the beatmap is played in auto mode and you get the points like you would in osu mode
- hit circles release bullets in circles when hit
- sliders release aimed bullet streams
- spinners release bullets in a spiral
- the player controls Pippi and if you get hit the combo counter resets
- graze gives some points so people who FC a song (no-miss clear) can compete with grazing instead of everyone having the same score

Feature request: Add bombs.

Make a CTB only map and stick a crapload of bombs on the map with lowest circle size.

Otherwise replace the bombs with actual notes and explain to people the object is to finish the game with the lowest number of points.

Best done on nofail.

^ on that, Spinners would be last spells, in the fact that they are bonus points if you do clear them, but dont affect your game if you dont (and cant bomb).

This shit is fucking amazing. However, it made me realize how hard bullet patterns might be to implement with the rhythm, unless they're all prescripted like the way they are in this game. Can't really do that with standard .osu maps.

btw. I don't know how it would even be possible to do Touhosu!. The only way i could think off is an opposite of CtB so you have to dodge everything.

This appeals to me in a lot of ways. Seeing as how I usually have osu minimized while I play Touhou, this would put quite a fun little twist on the two games.

I was thinking instead of just having bullets, you could have to dodge bars too instead of just bullets. and by bars, i mean bars that fly vertically and horizontally. Or maybe even shapes like triangles and squares. It would be interesting to see more things go across the screen than just bullets. Or some lasers.

It has already been mentioned before in the topic that lasers = sliders. And IMO bars are a stupid idea.

Also since this post has been bumped and I've thought of this for a looooong time, is it okay if we rename this mode to "Danmakosu!" instead? Calling it "Touhosu!" sounds like literally a ripoff from the Touhou series only while there are other bullet-hell games that can be referred to as well, and Danmakosu! defines that better. Remember that it's to reference the genre of bullet-hell than just from a single danmaku shooter series.

Okay, maybe not. But at least call this mode something better than using "Touhou" in the name since it's generically a bullet-hell mode and not just from Touhou.

Taiko mode/Taikosu! is an exception though because... it's Taiko.

I think "Touhosu" is a funny name :P.
Touhou is everywhere in the beatmaps and in the community, so I don't think it's a problem to name this (prospective) mode with a Touhou name.

i've only read half of that but, instead of putting something like this in osu!, just go play touhou or something. its wasting time putting a mode in osu! that's JUST like touhou when you can just go play the original game. yes, i know standard and taiko is also from a game, but touhou is free and something that everybody can just go and download. i don't see the point of putting it in osu!

But Touhou is not free. You're just a pirate.

osu! And Taiko modes are also interpretations of their own independent games, as is osu!Mania an interpretation of beatmaniaIIDX and DJMax. If you've nothing constructive to say, say nothing, or at the very least verify that what you say isn't total garbage.

ctb is also considered as an interpretation of Ez2catch but I recently discovered that the idea comes first from an hidden play mod in the BMS player Rythm it. It's the same as ctb but for two players.

Ez2catch is easier imo.
Sure it has drop on more than one place at the time but the tolerance is low so you can just make a fast scroll.
It's like playing ctb with relax mode and less tolerance. :P

i don't even know why i fucking bother posting in forums. i give my honest opinion how i feel about this and i get criticism just because i don't think it's a good idea. the whole point of this is for people to give feedback on what they think, not for you to go and insult/criticise people for their opinion. i thought touhou was something that was free to download for people, because when i searched it up there was always places to download it so i thought it was just a free little game you download on your computer. no need to give me rude replies =_=

Please, just make sure this game mode will have something to do with Rhythm, unlike other gamemodes where stuff is coming from above and you have to catch it.

When there's a beat, u should in some way click according to that beat.

Touhosu isn't defined yet. It's likely to be largely just a music game, but not a rhythm one... which is what CtB is. But as the peppy quote above says... getting rhythm involved in the gameplay (beyond the part where it's part of the music) is what would be preferred. How to do that is the big question. If there was a strong answer to it, then I think that development on Touhosu would start happening in earnest.

Uhh actually CtB is based off EZ2Catch which is a RHYTHM game. Also CtB follows the beat that a standard map is following, the only difference is you have to catch it in that game mode and not click circles and move your mouse.

Whats with all the hate on the game mode? Seriously, osu! is full of rhythm games, I mean why would peppy create CtB if it never followed or plan to follow any rhythm at all?

I assume it's going to be like CTB only reversed. Instead of catching the beats, you'll need to avoid them.

The best implementation would be to move in rythm to avoid bullets. Else it would be an audiosurf like (in much harder I hope).

@Seph : The idea of CtB doesn't come from Ez2catch. PM me for more info. But I agree CtB requires rythm (sometimes more than std and sometimes not, this is mainly due to std map adaptation).
