Looking great! Could probably have slightly rounder curves, but I'm pretty sure even I wouldn't see that in game.
D33d
Yeah, I kind of wish that I could've got them rounder, because they're noticeable in Easy. I'd fiddled around with the points a bit, but the sliders would either kink weirdly or become too squishy. Thanks! :3

For the record, these are the points:

Pretty much as even as I could get them.
Derekku
^I looooooooooove those kinds of sliders.
mm201
For those kinds of U-shaped elbows, I would combine the "lazy circle" technique with the regular elbow method.
Otherwise, getting perfect 180° circles is much harder than other angles.

(hmmm I might keep something like this since the song is about magnets...)
D33d
That's pretty fantastic. Getting a properly rounded 'U' is a pain when using a regular arc.

DEEDIT: This 'PONPONPON' map sure is getting fun.

Something basic?

Hmm, This wave slider is Easy to learn and good...

  1. Add a start point
  2. Make this Perfectly simetric (using ctrl+H)
  3. On the 2nd point, move 5 grids up like this.
  4. On the 4th point, move 5 grids down.
  5. Make the grid tiny and Make the points perfectly simetric using ctrl+H+J
  6. You have a easy simetric wave.
Jarby
You can also do them like this, but Larto hates me for it.

Jar you suck at aligning the endpoint
Also doing sliders that way looks a little wonky, but it's pretty damn good.
D33d
I dunno; that endpoint looks pretty damn in place. By the way, I'm trying to get Jar to use more points for his waves, as they tend to be pretty pointy. At least two three-point arcs, but he should totally use the OP madstyle waves instead.

Also, I've been having a bucketload of fun with various sliderarts, which include heart sliders, rotationally symmetrical wiggles and a massive loop thing with handlebars. Should I bother to post them here? I wouldn't want to inundate the thread with my pratting around.

I'm pretty sure Jar sliders are improving and getting less pointy. I don't really mind them anyway, it's Jarby charm.

Oh, and we love a bit of pratting around

Pratting around, you say? Okay, have a load of sliders which are a bit more fancy than stitching together arcs and lines with redpoints.

Capricorn is kinda ugly. Also the symbol has 2 ways of being written but I like this way more.

This loop was hella hard to do with the acr after it. Actually it's ugly if you're really picky (like me...)

Quite easy actually, there's an uglyness on the arcs though, look carefully.

It isn't too difficult once you get the hang of it. Just follow it step by step, and don't be afraid to ask if you have problems.
D33d
I forgot if this has already been mentioned, but in the case of sliders (especially arcs) looking too squishy/pointy, ensure that the points are equidistant from each other. I see a lot of symmetrical sliders which look squishy or pointy, when they could easily be made smoother by some simple adjustments.

The slider type kinda kills the slider itself for me, though. I think it'd look much nicer with mmsliders. Right now the slider type makes it non-symmetrical-looking. D:

So, to be picky, it's 55.22847498%. The smaller the arc, the fewer grids/osupixels of difference.

Close enough in any case. Any slight differences can be adjusted anyway, and I'm already having a much easier time with elbows.

I find using the Reverse selection (Ctrl+R) very useful in making sliders symmetrical. That way you know the corrdinates of the endpoint.

That's basically the same as ctrl+H.

And reverse can ruin the slider
blissfulyoshi
Probably the best way to make symmetrical sliders is to make make a copy of your slider and paste a quarter note after your original slider. Then do the horizontal flip/reversing before trying to align the nodes to fit the shape. That way you have a constant replica that you can follow at all times.

Is THAT why you used to abuse redpoints?

GONZ WHAT IS THAT MONSTROSITY

I THOUGHT THAT YOU WERE PUNCHING TERRORISTS, NOT BEING ONE
Topic Starter
RandomJibberish
Actually I used to abuse redpoints because the threshold of where the slider snaps back to the next tick was too low - it was impossible to line the sliderend up with the last node. I was always too lazy to endpoint nudge like mm or witchcraft symmetrify like m980, so I did the redpoint thing.
D33d
Oh oh oh, I know that heart sliders are old news, but I felt like sharing this heart slider that I made for Jarby a while back, because I'm still reasonably pleased with it.

One of these days, this medley will be finished.

Use the Scale tool to grow that spiral enough so that its borders don't touch.

How do you do the sign for infinity (an 8 lying down) with a relatively short slider?

Please help me
mm201
One option would be to use the elbow / lazy arc method:

And then rotate 45°:

Use the Scale tool to shrink it to taste. Some start cap jossling might be necessary.
It's just plain impossible to give very small sliders complicated shapes.
I wouldn't dare shrink it any smaller than:

Is this an okay way of making wave sliders?
mm201
m980 used to make some that way a long time ago. It's harder to get them looking as smooth as with other methods.
D33d
Yeah, just use nodes. It's not hard to make sliders without the anchor in the middle--just move points around until you have two smooth arcs.

Good. RJ created this thread in order to save time during his own mods. However, bear in mind that some sliders don't have to be perfect if they're simple, although it definitely helps if they are. Such basics as making tidy sliders and patterns ought to be imposed on mappers more often, especially those who are new. Jarby pestered me countless times to look at this thread until I got sliders right and I have few problems with them now.

DEEDIT: Just a happy little contribution with some circle size 2 blankets (AR0 to show distant objects):

Interlocking magic.

Almost a 'Glamorous Sky' overlap, but AR3 + slider snaking prevents the overlap elegantly.

Not totally perfect, but I had to take the bottom slider out of snap and it took forever to make it work at all:

Fancy circular blanketing:

Horizontal symmetry is created with circles (yes, they line up perfectly):

That's just more effort than is needed. Why they couldn't create those chevrons out of five points is beyond me. Never mind the fact that they could just copy one slider and rotate it, but they probably haven't met the rotate tool.

Yeah, it's feel very good when making 3-node(very simple) sliders. I love it so much :3
D33d
It's also the easiest way to make a map very bland. Get creative! You don't have to make silly Gonzvlo/Garven sliders, but dropping in a few waves and wider arcs adds loads to a map. The key is adding some variance without going overboard, so that the style of a map is consistent from start to finish. A very effective approach is saving the most fancy and long sliders for the chorus and copying most of the chorus. If the song doesn't have a distinct chorus, then it'll probably have repetition. Anyway, the end result is that the player's hit over the head with something extremely fancy and lends to the visual appeal of a map as a whole.
Low

Second one isn't perfect yet.
D33d
As I'll probably never do this again, I'm immortalising this thing that I made on a whim. I did it in like five minutes or something.

I had to speed up the second slider, because it was going nowhere near where I wanted it to go.
