Opinions
Trying to just make something unique does not guarantee that gameplay is representative of the music, and I think that should be the most essential goal. Although I still like the idea of being a "jack of all trades, master of none." (~2018)

After a long break where I had no opportunity or interest to map I randomly wanted to come back and make a bit more of a long-term mark within the community. Some people know me, but I think largely speaking (except for my friends) only really as a meme.
For a long time, I didn't rank anything since I tried hard to appeal to my mentor Halfslahsed, to make something that he would consider at least decent (or even good). I somewhat achieved that goal with my Gareki no Yume set, but nowadays I feel like I shouldn't be as harsh on myself when it comes to ranking maps that aren't perfect.
I wanna rank at least a few things at this point without restricting myself too much. (2021)

Here's a list of potentially controversial opinions I have.
1. "Aesthetics don't matter." My thoughts on this aren't as radical as they might seem. A better way to phrase this could be: "I don't think conventionally clean visuals or any stylized aesthetics are necessary for a map to be high quality". I like what can be expressed via visual patterning, but it's important to set consistent priorities. While a conventionally "ugly" map with great gameplay can be amazing, a visually interesting map that fails to take gameplay into mind I think can't. To some degree these two aspects often come into conflict, well-organized visuals always limit where objects can be placed and those limitations can be detrimental or coincidentally work together.
2. Overmaping is a genuine mapping technique and should be more commonly accepted. Currently (at the time of me writing this) overmapping is considered to be a somewhat controversial rhythm technique since it might be viewed as too disassociated with the music. It's a vague topic as its main uses are for the playability of irregular rhythms, organizing rhythm density more logically, or creating more interesting to play rhythms in otherwise monotonous songs. While it can easily be used incorrectly, to me it's important that mappers stay open to it.
3. Collabs that mix different styles are uninspired. This may be a less common idea in the current meta, but collabs in the past have often been made with the mindset of mashing styles together for fun regardless of how previous parts were mapped. I feel like this often resulted in mappers mapping the same parts of the song with different rhythms, spacing-emphasis, spacing concepts, aesthetics, etc. I value when people take their time to talk about concepts before they start mapping and if inconsistencies between each other— in for example rhythm concepts— arise there's a discussion followed by some compromise. I rather address it when I disagree with a collaborator's concepts than accept differences in style. I'd also be willing to change my parts if the result is therefore more coherent. When talking about the structure of the song it can be a good idea to use differences in mapping styles to express major differences in it as opposed to changing mid-section. The most important thing in my opinion is just that styles should be organized to create a good map and encourage discussion.
4. NCs for readability or purely aesthetic reasons suck. A lot of NC concepts that are supposed to help players read in my opinion often either don't work or are unnecessary. For example, does any player recognize when an NC is supposed to hint at changes in SV? To me that seems completely unsubstantiated, I've never heard anyone pay attention to NCs in this way. While NC spam for odd rhythms is noticeable I still hate it. Do we have to treat players like children who can't read approach circles? Why is reading difficulty bad anyway? If you think it is bad just simplify the rhythm to not affect how NCs group objects together in your map. Some people also use NCs to make certain patterns look cleaner by removing followpoints and such. If you don't like followpoints (or only like them when they happen to line up with some other visual elements) then disable them from your skin or tell ppy to remove them from the game. Lastly, I don't have anything against more complex usage of NC (and honestly NCs barely matter), but the kind of NC concepts I like usually revolve around grouping objects together based on the structure of the music. If using NCs based on the structure of the music results in patterns that you find ugly, maybe instead of adding a combo change how your objects are arranged.
5. Patterns being difficult to read isn't an issue. There's a quote from UndeadCapulet (I got it from -White's profile) that I like.
[...] and as far as [I'm] concern[ed], [the] readability of a map isn't even something mappers should concern themselves with anyway, since players can improve to read anything or play the map a couple of times to learn the song. [I] would much rather use compelling arranges to express the song and make for an engaging experience for people that are able to play the map, instead of just worrying about if all players, even the worst of the worst, are able to play it. [T]hose handholdy maps are pretty dull imo.I think in general it's best to make higher difficulties always assuming people will be able to play them perfectly and abuse the game's mechanics to the highest extent.
