Because of primaries, it's basically a preliminary election to appoint and narrow the delegates to a political party for the presidential election itself. The reason why these take so long (Usually starts at January) is because state vie with each other to move their preliminaries earlier in the season to get more influence, television visibility, and economic revenue.
