I'm stupid, I assume that because we've been riding horses for a long time and elephants are much bigger than horses, that elephants are fine with rides. Turns out this is not the case. In any case, the place we went to charged US$70 per head. We weren't paying that, that's more than twice the price of admission to the zoo in my country. Google reviews later warned us of animal abuse happening at that place. However true or false whatever the hosts or former visitors tell us, we knew something was up when they charged that kind of money...

also i doubt you would have gotten much backlash here of all places, most people are ignorant about those contexts (if not that, then i'm at least speaking for myself) but you've made whatever informed/uninformed decisions made sense to you... i can't imagine i or anyone else would be in much of a position to compel anything from you, even in light of wishing that people avoided being complicit in perpetuating animal abuse
granted, we can only make assumptions until we've known it for ourselves, and we can only hope there would be protections in place for the assurance of their welfare someday soon...
