So, right now when you unpause the game, the game gets you to click on your last cursor position to start again.

Problem with current unpause system: you have little time to pick up rhythm, leading to misses and fail.
1. cursor is too far from the next circle so you dont have enough time to reach it.
2. forgot rhythm
3. next circle is milliseconds after unpause.

Suggestion: rewind 2-3 seconds, then whatever has already been hit cannot be hit(Grayed out) and the first available hit is the one usually after you unpause.
This allows the player to pick up the rhythm and continue as if they never paused.

The way how pause works is made on purpose. Mainly because of the replay:
  1. Imagine if a pro player submitted a score and got the top 50 on a map in which he paused like 3 times. Then the replay would look like the cursor instantly jumped from one point of screen to another.
Then, because of the skill:
  1. If you know that on that somewhere in a map has a hard pattern and you want to be ready for it. You pause and analyze that pattern, then after unpause, like you said, it rewinds back to 2-3 seconds and that will give you time to prepare to hit that part of map.
So basicaly, it won't be implemented for players to avoid using those 2 "lifehacks?".

If this were to be a thing the cursor placement could be cheesed. Sure locking the cursor in-place during the rewind would work for mouse players but for tablet and touchscreen the cursor would just teleport the moment you gained cursor control. I will admit being able to hear the last few seconds would be nice to get back on Rythmn but without an actual way to lock the cursor clicking where you last were seems the only reliable way to avoid cheating.

Then limit how many pauses you can have in a single play to 1?

Better limit to once every minute or such then
Playing 'The Unforgiving' and only allowing one pause is aweful

The game isn't meant to be paused in the first place.
No game is meant to be paused.

don't pause between 1/4th 200 bpm jumps?

this game wasn't meant to be paused, and the unforgiving atleast has 20 - 40 seconds in between each song so breaks are ok to pause

i mean, you really shouldn't pause in a break unless something came up
