I forgot to mention this, but there were at least $300 of direct donations to JRC which I forgot to include in that total.

I kind of want to know how you know that
Sinistro
I guess the donators told him? Maybe JRC accepts payment methods other than Paypal or something (*is too lazy to check)

Oh yeah I suppose. I thought the "email receipts" part would be done during the transaction process, which wasn't the case, and by that time I'd forgotten

I can establish other means, but it would still be credit card centric. It is very hard to me to accept money in asian countries without jumping a lot of hoops. If anyone is willing to help me with this then it may be an option, but until them I am afraid it is not possible.

In a previous announcement I read this statement:

"Note that Japan has not requested any help from remote organisations, so for example if you donate to the US Red Cross, Japan will not get anything out of it (unless they request it, which at this point seems unlikely)."
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=48377

Can someone back this up with sources, further explanations or the current status (did japan requested help after all?)

thanks

As far as I know, Japan has still not requested help, but Red Cross America did commit some money towards them. Keep in mind there are still overheads (as in they will take a percentage of your donation) so make sure to check the fine-print. A quick google search should get you answers.
ztrot
Still it's a very noble cause.
Vish024
Congrats, pleasure to be part of it.

I said this many times, dont donate to japan. Please japan has the world 3 largest economy and they dont need donation. The government itself is already prepared for that. You should odnate to people who really need that money like africa and poor countries

peppy
You are comparing an apple with an orange. The situation in japan is one of sudden change, not something they have grown accustomed to. Also, I personally feel in debt to Japan as a country, as i have spent much time over there. I don't think you have the right to tell us who to donate to.

The government may be "prepared", but the people who suddenly lost their families, friends, homes and belongings aren't. That is where red cross direct the bulk of their money -- both to help them recover spiritually and physically.
