So I've been playing 4k for a while and as I've read a bunch on how i sould play, read etc, when reading this stuff I noticed something, everyone tells you that the ideal position to look is in the middle of the screen, I however kind of follow the notes with my Eyes from somewhere around the middle all the way to the bottom of the screen. Is this something i have to stop doing in order to read harder patterns at higher ranks or should i just continue doing it since it feels more natural for me? Thanks in advance, appreciate it!

it doesn't matter
there is no right way

just play and try to hit the notes perfectly. if you're really hitting them perfectly you're doing it right.

generally patterns that are too dense for you force your eyes to move down while patterns that are low density allow you to look more up. this is not something you should be doing consciously it just happens on its own...

Actually Aqo, in my experience that is a bad habit that you should avoid if possible. I used to do that too, but I found out that when my eyes would drop down to the bottom of the screen, I would not have time to actually read patterns correctly and would end up making a lot more mistakes until I could go back to focusing on the middle of the screen.

One way to break this habit is play with hidden a lot. Hidden makes it so that even when you try to look down, you can't look as far, and if you're actually doing well and you have a big combo, you won't be able to look down at all.

seconding this, though I'd like to add that having a distraction beside the notes falling would be great and I currently use the combo meter to prevent myself from locking onto the notes, personally have quite a flashy hit lightling to kinda blur the bottom of the screen as well.
locking onto the notes is especially useful for bursty maps but if you find yourself locking onto every single pattern, the map may be too fast/hard for you to handle currently

hidden makes me worse at reading because there's less density on the screen and it makes me become worse at deciphering complex patterns

you can't generalize this, different people read differently :V

It's a tradeoff between reaction speed and the ability to read larger amounts of objects at once. I've never flat out said "play hidden because it makes you good", i was suggesting that for some people, hidden may help train your eyes to stop following notes down the screen. That specific issue is something I had a lot of trouble with, and I found that in my case, trying hidden was a useful way to retrain myself to not do that.

Just like scroll speed is personal preference and no one speed works for everyone, the same obviously goes for reading mods. Some people will never really adjust to them, while others may become so accustomed to them that they literally cannot play without the vision mod.

However, the actual issue at hand here, following the notes down to the bottom of the screen (or top in the case of upscroll players), will have some effect on a player's ability to read. If you assume the same length of time is required to read a pattern regardless of where you focus on the screen (which appears to be a reasonable assumption), reading closer to the receptors/judgement line leaves you less time to correctly read the patterns and react, which is very likely exactly what is causing Edz problems, just as it caused me similar issues.

You develop a method of reading as you play. You start to look at patterns as jacks and less as streams as the notes get a little denser, some people read streams vertically or horizontally, it starts to come naturally. I personally look at a lot of patterns as jacks with notes instead of streams with jacks when it comes to jumpstream, and handstream I search for the vertical trill in the patterns.

The issue however is not that you should focus really hard, it should happen naturally, but in order for it to become natural you need to be comfortable, which only happens after lots of practice. This means you will develop your own way of looking at the screen, a lot of people look at the absolute top with a high speed when reading streams, some people look at the middle for jacks and look at the bottom for accuracy.

Things like these sort themselves out. Reading in the middle isn't ALWAYS the solution.

Not sure if that made sense, TL:DR you learn to read songs in a specific way, and it might affect where you look. It's a combination of a few things, at least in my experience, and you just need to get a feel for it

If you want something to help break the habit of following notes, turn up your scroll speed a bit. It will become harder for you to follow notes down as you will have less time to read the incoming notes.
