Any Legal Beatmaps?

I know that a very large proportion (if not all) of the beatmaps on this website are made with songs without the legal rights to do so....

SOOOO

I was wondering, if anyone else out there knew of any specific beatmaps that are either royalty free, or definately do have the legal requirements to have been mad beatmaps out of.. THANKS!! :) :D

Beatmaps aren't technically illegal due to whatever copyrightish wording Peppy has.

All of the maps packaged with osu should fit your criteria.

Are there even any songs (except those bundled) that aren't illegal? :P

peppy is not selling the songs for any profit (all the money from supporters go to running osu and puush servers), so it's not illegal. Plus if they ask him to remove the song, he will. At least that is how I understand it to work.

By that logic downloading music from the internet without paying for it is totally legal as well. I mean, the torrent uploaders aren't making a profit right?

Maybe read some copyright laws before making absurd assumptions. The only reason copyrighted material exists on the site is because the content owners either have not caught wind of it yet or they simply do not care, most likely the former.

The copyright page linked at the footer (https://osu.ppy.sh/p/copyright) is merely just a failsafe for when the content owners do start caring.

depends on if you need further popularity, or if the map would just be a gateway or people that already know you, to pirate your stuff.

THe only beatmaps i'm sure they're legal are the ones from the Monthly Mapping Contest

thanks so much for that link, these are the kinds of beatmaps i want, where you're sure that the owner wanted a beatmap made for it, knows that the song will be played any time that the user wants and purposely puts it up on here for that specific reason.

if you know of any more songs like such, and the ones made by the dude u said thanked the osu! community for making a beatmap out of their song, dont hesitate to leave a link

thanks a lot guys, i also looked at the mappping contest ones, yay :D I was scared for a second thinking all the beatmaps on here were made from stolen songs :D

generally, most lesser known artists wont have a problem with people mapping their songs. They even welcome it because it gives them a boost of popularity.

If someone has a problem with a song being present here, the artist or the company behind the artist can just e-mail peppy (the creator of osu), and the song will be taken down immediately.

Legally, this seems to be a gray area (hooray). You won't get into any trouble when you download songs through osu.

im most worried morally
i know that it's quite unlikely for any legal problems due to this grey area, i read osu!'s copyright page and i sorta realized that it sort of cleared those who download from much trouble, and it's more on the uploaders... i just couldn't justify being in possession of stolen property regarless of my legal "protection"

Thank you everyone for the help and info, i really like this game and was finding a way of satisfying that like and also my moral compass.\

A compromise would be to purchase every song once in addition to downloading it here, if you want to support the creators.

Here are some more maps. The artist puts them on bandcamp for free ( https://goreshit.bandcamp.com/ ), so I suppose he wouldn't mind it if you instead get his music for free here.

The way they go about obtaining rights for the contest maps you could do the same yourself, contacting the creator and asking for usage permissions.
