Hey everyone. I have only recently picked up the mode osu!mania about 4 months ago, and I have been killing it pushing to be better all the time. I have had some extreme pain before, but I gave it a week from time to time to rest my fingers, but something new is happening to my left arm. If you have ever pushed so hard, your arms become weak, and you cannot push many more buttons and have to take a break. But now when I just start to play, or even when I am not playing now, I feel this weakness in my left arm, and it has ruined my confidence and my sleeping patterns the last 2 weeks. I have given it 2 weeks to heal, but nothing has improved, and now I am getting upset because I want to play rhythm games!

If anybody has experienced this, or knows where to turn, please do not be afraid to help me, I am getting very concerned, and I just want to light up some competition for next years world cup!

Thanks for reading

Regards,

Shaun

Weakness or numbness? If it's been ruining your sleep schedule because it's so numb during sleep that it bothers you, then you could be having a start of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Visit a doctor.

It could takes months to recover, if you pushed it really hard in the first 3 months when you started to play the game

Your hands just aren't ready yet

Being the competitive player I am, I made it to 1600 in O!M, probably much faster than my hands wanted to go. But my ducky shine 4 will be coming soon, and I will want to play again

Mania can destroy your wrist if you're pushing too hard. I pushed too hard once and my right hand was so bad I couldn't open doors, type, hold stuff, etc. for about a week before it stopped hurting. Now I have to be really careful about how hard I push myself, because I sure as fuck don't want to repeat that.

Don't be afraid to talk to a doctor, RSIs are a big deal, and can cause lifelong problems. They can interfere with your ability to work, so it's not just about being able to play mania.

The other thing you can do is make a real effort to relax your muscles as much as possible when you play. It can be really difficult to stop yourself from tensing up, but tensing up is the worst thing you can do when you play mania. It drains your stamina incredibly quickly, limits your speed, and can make these things so much worse. So if you're going to keep playing while this is happening, try really hard to avoid tensing up. If you learn to keep your muscles relaxed you might also get a nice skill boost from it. (This is all assuming you're not already aware of that how important keeping your muscles relaxed is.)

Have carpal tunnel syndrome on my left hand after trying to pass a 4.6 star map back in December. Still hurts if a strain it too much, mainly in dump stream maps, but it hasn't halted my progress in mania yet. Since then I gained 2000 more ranks.

do you want to be able to use your hands for the rest of your life or do you want to get a fancy rank in an online rhythm game? you should really take this stuff more seriously and go see a doctor, they arent there to make fun of you, they are there to help you.

Carpal syndrome is a really common thing for games that pushes you to have gigantic APM. as said before, visit a doctor, tell him exactly what happenned (he probably wont make fun of you, there are a lot of people who suffer from this actually, most doctors are used to this). Once you recovered, ALWAYS stretch your hands before playing.

Here's an exercise you can do before playing, i learned it from Starcraft II pro players :

stretch your arms in front of you, your hands should be slighly above your shoulders level. then, close your hands, like you would do when punching something, fingers toward the ground, and stretch your wrist by moving your hands so that your knuckles are almost facing the ground. Keep that position for 5-7 seconds, rest 3 seconds. repeat 5 times.

Once you've done that you have to do it the other way and stretch the lower part of your wrist, there's plenty of ways to do that but i'd recommands putting your hands on the wall, wrists toward the ceiling and push slightly on the wall to stretch them.

EDIT : i forgot to say, if the exercises i gave you don't work for you or give you too much pain, try to find other ways to stretch, everyone has different muscles and needs to find what works for them, i'm just giving out what worked for ME as i got carpal syndrome back when i was playing CSS :v

Thank you all for the help, I scheduled an appointment today. My ducky shine 4 comes today... there is no way I can stop now lol. But seriously thank you, and keep the suggestions coming please!

It is fun (or may I call that fun) coincidence. When we talked today at Fan4i's stream the same thing started to happen to me. When I played 4k, I felt slight pain on wrist, then my muscles just gave up and I failed a song at the easiest part. I'll see what happens when I go to sleep, but I am pretty sure its carpal tunnel syndrome. And I'll stop playing if it won't get better tomorrow.

Gesk, chances are very good it will disappear tomorrow. Problems with the wrist like this don't appear out of the blue one day without warning signs. These kind of injuries are created by pushing your muscle/tendon limits too much and too often. If you stop straining so hard, take breaks more often, and stretch your hands properly before playing and every 30 minutes or so, you can either avoid these problems or at least lessen them.

Yeah my hands are basically dead.

Just a small tid bit of into, there are other wrist/hand related injuries outside of carpal tunnel, for instance: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-cond ... n-20027238
Sc2 + O!M provided the above to me (not that I'm good at either anyways). I'm not a doctor but I'd suggest taking more frequent breaks and perhaps do some hand exercises/stretches prior to sitting down and playing.

UPDATE for people worried about their hands... They are fixed and better than before. you really need to let it heal, and let it become a hobby in between games.
