I am trying to get into osu mania because it seems fun. I read under a mania tips somewhere that it is best to try and play all types (4k,5k,6k ect..) . I can do okish on the 4k songs, but everything goes to hell when the space bar is introduced. I know the answer is probably just play more, but is anyone using different key configs b/c of something like this? and maps or other tips to help out?

Some people tend to not use the spacebar, and instead replace the thumb with another finger on the dominant hand. For example, a person using D F J K for 4K might use D F J K L for 5K instead of D F Space J K. I personally use the spacebar, and I think 5K with spacebar is a good way to get used to playing with spacebar for later improvements.

In addition, I HIGHLY suggest that you download mania specific beatmaps instead of playing autoconverts (maps that have been converted to mania from a standard chart). Autoconvert mania patterns are ridiculously limited and offer almost no diversity that vertical scrolling rhythm games have to offer. Play the charts that are meant for osu!mania. You'll find a huge difference as you play.

Yes, I'd like to add that it's always better to get used to the higher keymodes first. This allows you to improve with the lower keymodes even without playing them. For example, you will naturally improve in 4K if you play 7K only. However, you will not improve at 7K if you play 4K only. People who have started out with 4K only and have improved to a certain extent have a really hard time getting used to the higher keymodes.

All that being said, here are some choices for you:

If you'd like to have a go at 7K right away, I've created a 7K Dan Course that allows players (even those that have just begun to play 7K) to gauge their skills. There is also a 4K Dan Course, but this is geared towards more advanced players so I don't recommend it.

However, this 4K Skill Analysis Mapset is very beginner friendly and you might actually be able to use this for your benefit.

For individual songs that are geared towards beginners, I suggest these maps below:

There are tons of other good maps that you can find in the beatmap tab under osu!mania, so I suggest you go check that out to find maps that you like.

Good luck!

I'll check this out more thoroughly in the morning but this is the exact type of thing I was looking for. Thanks a ton! My current top ranked map is the osu mania tutorial that you linked, but hey, it's something O.o.

Nice post jinjin.

I just want to put some things into perspective for you. When I started playing 7k in o2jam (before osu!mania existed) it took several weeks to get comfortable with the space bar. And even then I felt like spacebar was a big weakness for me. Games like this reward dedication more than anything else.

If you actively want to improve, try to look for maps that are a bit harder than you feel comfortable playing. Don't worry about your score, or trying to rank up, just enjoy yourself playing different maps for the first while. You're still in the early learning stages, and the most important thing is to just keep playing.
