Can't even beat Normal on a beatmap, as seen here. What are some good tips, I've been out of practice for a while.

Because learning how to complete a beatmap and using SuddenDeath work at the same time, hmm?

Advice: lay off the mods except for HR/DT/Hidden/FS and play some noob maps.

Well your score doesn't really count unless it gets on the scoreboard, and the scores are so high you need to hit every note to even get close, so yeah.

Don't even think about full comboing right now from how your problem sounds imo.

See, I don't play standard anymore...

  1. Don't bother FC'ing every map. I.e., disable SD and don't retry when you miss.
  2. Play a wide variety of maps. Older maps, newer maps. Jumpy maps, fast maps. Tricky maps, straightforward maps.
  3. Limit yourself to five retries per map per day.

When honing skills disregard full combos. Play as many different maps as possible. Retry as little as possible unless you are trying to pass the map. Ignore the stats. Just play.

Play maps beyond your skill level,it was sorta mentioned in strager's post but I'll just straight out say it.
And when I say beyond your skill level I don't mean a map with HP drain and overall difficulty set to max which makes you fail if you miss like 2 notes. Just play something that's just a bit too hard, you'll probably fail, but in the process you'll slowly get better, you'll learn how to read faster maps with bigger jumps or zig-zag patterns or any other random things thrown in.
And most importantly, the old saying: Practice makes perfect. Just keep on playing, have fun, don't get discouraged. You'll get better eventually.

dont play so fast songs if you are a beginner ^^
watch the approach circles, improve the timing, watch your mouse cursor and make your game option set what you feel the best to play

Play Hard difficulty songs. Doesn't matter if you pass with a D. You'll just get better playing them, and when you're good enough, fix your accuracy with your newfound skill. You can't get better if you play easy songs.

Peace, calm, tranquility. That is the key. If you get frustrated, your skill decreases, making you even more frustrated, which, in turn, decreases your skill further. Stay calm and eventually you will enter a zen like state in which you can full combo insane difficulty songs.

Don't listen to anyone above except Hanyuu (and maybe xXSupanoobXx); they all suck.

I was advised by the same friends who introduced me to the game (and one of them rarely needs this advice at this point) to play maps that I have trouble with by turning on "No Fail", simply so I can learn the whole song and not just get crushed by the next hard part as I get past one.

My advice, play a lot of beatmaps at and just past your skill level. Use "No Fail" if you need to on the hard ones, and actually try to clear them. Limited retries per day is good too; unless you want to focus on a single map, I'd suggest no more than 5 times per map per day. And sleep well at night. You'll get better day by day if you practice for a reasonable amount of time per day and then rest properly when the day is done -- your mind and body use sleep to reinforce your mental reflexes and muscle memory, so practie combined with good sleep is a key to becoming good at any rhythm game.

The easiest thing is to use "Auto Mode" to see how the BOT handle the map.
For me, after watching the map twice, I already know where the object will be shown.
Maybe that's the reason why the "Auto mode" was made. 8-)

This doesn't help your ability to sight read, which is immensely helpful, especially as you gain experience.

Sleep doesn't help that much.

After watch twice, I already know the tempo for the song. Well, everyone have different style of play though.
For me, those one are the best
