[New rule] Include the song's official video when possible

my first thread in this subforum, please be gentle

Sometimes mapsets of songs that have videos get ranked without them because the mapper is too lazy or whatever, I don't know. I'm looking mostly at TV size anime openings, but most pop songs come with music videos too.

Of course this would exclude cases where the video is NSFW or the video is hard to find/acquire for some reason, but for songs whose videos are easily obtained, I don't see why they shouldn't be included in the map. If the mapper can't get their own video, they can ask for help from others. Video complements the song (obviously) and provides opportunities for people to comment on something funny or cool in the video while spectating/watching replays.

This should be entirely preference of the uploader as it is now. This doesn't warrant being a rule, or guideline. If you want, you could learn a thing or two about encoding and offer a video to people for their sets, but forcing them to include video is unreasonable.

.....why rule, forcing things like this is kinda.....eh

As I just said (if you had read the whole post), there is no reason to not include video. Not including a video when one is available is what's unreasonable.

There are several people out there who can encode them. I can too, but I don't offer to because the program I use is inefficient (low quality for the file size) and the good program doesn't work on my computer.

Doesn't change the fact that you want to enforce something that really should be optional.

Also about Official video, sometimes even if people use videos it's not official, like AMVs.
CXu
I guess the main problem would be if the mapper wants to create a storyboard instead. There's also the fact that you might dislike the official video for one reason or another, and just want your bg instead (and your combo colors would match that instead of a video). Well and there're those who have dinosaur internet.

I think the main issue would probablybe the storyboard maps in this case, i guess.

@xxdeathx: And for gamemodes like Taiko, videos are in most cases not suitable, since you don't have the full area which you can watch the video on. Would mean that you have to make exceptions aka guideline. I do believe having such rule / guideline isn't needed.

This should always be mentioned in the modding process, but i wouldn't enforce it as a rule.
some people also like to make storyboards for tv sized maps

I'm gonna pitch in and say this should be, at the most, a guideline. There's a few reasons for this.

One, because some people will prefer to put the video in, but don't want to be forced to, and to tie in with this, as CXu said, there are mappers who want to create storyboards instead. This might present a problem. If you look, at, say, Saten's version of Senketsu no Chikai, you have both the video and SB, and it looks kinda weird; you can't really have both without it flowing awkwardly except in a few cases.

Two, as Ono said, Taiko mode has an awkward situation with this sort of thing where you can't see it all, even with the additional area given; about 15% of the screen is covered and that 15% is a very important part of the screen, so it just doesn't look right either way. If this were to be a rule, then there would need to be an exception for Taiko mode, most likely.

Three, there aren't that many people who can encode videos to a reasonable quality, and while this isn't a fully justifiable reason as you can find one if you look hard enough, it's an inconvenience for those who would be forced to if this became an absolute rule. Also, what about file size? If we're gonna talk about that, then normally a video adds like 30-50% to the file size (with mention to Senketsu no Chikai as mentioned before, without video the mapset is 10.4MB and with video it's 15.6MB, an increase of 50%).

That's just my two cents though. Feel free to counter any of these.

^ totally agree, also most of players don't even play with video.

I agree having official video in a map is pretty cool (unless as most of people do, using functions for blu-ray encode, which just cause load), but I think forcing it even if it is easily obtainable is quite inappropriate. He might want to include own storyboard or in case of older anime if the mapper is using a nice background, but video's art is ugly, then he may be disgusted by using the video. Most people not even playing with video is not an apologize, some play some don't that's about preference and shouldn't be really reason for this not being a rule, but yeah, forcing is chaining the mapper in my opinion.
Kurokami
Eh, no. Think with low bandwidth, forcing mappers to upload 10+ Mb is a really bad idea. I have this problem as well, and I think a very good background is better than any video can be. Instead of forcing this, why not just suggest it to mapper in your mods? Maybe include a good source as well.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with this.
Bara-
No
Don't force it
You can put it in a guideline, but do not force people to do it
Most people dl w/o video anyway
Lemmen
All I can think is: So you want to make a rule to make file sizes unnecessary bigger, and then put them on beatmaps confusing the player? It might just be me (And like 99% of other osu players) But I usually play with a dimmed background and no video as it's unnecesseraily confuses me. I don't even believe this should be a guideline at all, pretty stupid thought in my opinion.

If you want to make an argument, it is very nice way to share your opinion with others. But please, avoid offensive language and attacking others for their opinions, thank you.

Realize others might have different opinion, but how does xxdeathx deserve to be offended for his opinion?
Kibbleru
no need to force it.. and besides, it's not like this is getting out of hand or something. i haven't seen a map that does this yet
XinCrin
Simply mapper can post a youtube link to the video if someone wants to wach it. No need to force it
Garven
I think the community has spoken here.

Community don't like it, but "it's the mapper's choice", "no need to force it", and "should be optional" are not reasons, just the opposite opinion.
WingSilent
Mapper's choice vs Player's choice.
95% plays without videos.

Most of them are with 100% dim or "disable videos" checked.
Also, a video can be very distracting (Ex : Leaf : Calamity Fortune) so.. no. :/

As a mapper, i don't include videos.
