I notice that some of my replays for top scores last a long time... others don't? Is there a criteria on how they are saved? I have some I want to make sure are kept...

All local solo plays should be saved in your osu\Data\r folder. Multi-player games are not auto-saved yet.
You can manually export replays by pressing F2 at the result screen.
