I'll add two more:
  1. Tribes: Ascend
  2. Guild Wars 2
they are both in beta, but they are the best f2p imo. If you haven't played these, you are missing out.

While Iji was already mentioned, another game by Daniel Remar that I enjoy even more (despite Iji being a better game actually) is Hero Core. Quite 8-Bit-y and really good.

As far as free games go, osu! is as good as it gets imo.
Though I enjoyed Spiral Knights, I can see it getting old after a little while.

I'm surprised Team Fortress 2 (and possibly others from Steam) isn't on the list. (Correct me if I'm wrong here, I only checked the first page)

Tetroid 2012 is also another good free game I'd recommend, if you wouldn't mind the experimental music (?) and the constant flashes. And no, it was made a few years ago, not in 2012. Also here's a gameplay preview I made for you guys, or you can just read more about the game here, along with a download link in the page.
