Many kids create their own imaginary friends at a young age - some even keeps them until they get older. An imaginary friend is made, so that he/she won't be lonely. And no matter what they say, we all know that imaginary friends
aren't real.
Right?A man, around his late 30's slouches in the living room. In one hand, he sips a cup of coffee, as the other one holds the weekly newspaper. His left thumb follows the sentences, as he reads the dusty paper. The afternoon sunlight streams through the window, filling the room with a heartwarming atmosphere.
All t once, the hears a cry. "Daddy!"
Without even moving, his eyes look onto the upper floor. He sees his daughter, barely 6 years old stomping down the stairs. Her reddish hair bobbles with eachstep she takes, and in one hand she holds a box of some sort.
As she enters the room, she marches straight up to him, in a pout. The anger on her face is no more then 3 feet away from him.
He sighs. "Yes, Lily?"
She lifts up the container, which revealed to be a chocolate box and shoves it in his face.
"This chocolate isn't good!" She complains. "Matt won't like it."
At that moment, the father could only roll his eyes. Of course, her imaginary friend wouldn't like it. "Then what chocolate does Matt like?"
"Hmm..." She motions to be right back, and runs off. A few seconds later she returns. Firmly, she replied "Matt would like Caramel chocolate."
"Caramel, huh?" He repeated, with barely any enthusiasm in his voice. "How wonderful."
All at once, he drops what he had in his hands. He stands up to his daughter, his shadow casting over her petite figure. He then crouches down, so that they met eye-to-eye, and was equal in height.
"Honey, if you don't like this chocolate I bought for you, just say so - I won't be angry alright?"
However, Lily only shakes her head. "No daddy. Matt wants chocolate, not me! Matt really likes chocolate."
He grunts. "Your imaginary friend."
"He's not an imaginary friend! He's real daddy, he is!"
"Then can I see him?"
"No!"
"Why not?"
She hesitated. "B-Because...."
She looks down glumly, tapping the ground with her left foot. "Matt doesn't really like you daddy. He doesn't."
Another heavy sigh came from him. Ever since they moved to their new home here in Osayaki (made up name), his daughter created an imaginary friend named Matt. And for the past few days, all he would hear from her was Matt.
Of course, this Matt guy wasn't real. He'd never seen nor heard about him before here. Not in the house, not in the entire town itself.
"Look honey," He explains. "I understand that we've just moved here. All our life, we've been moving around, trying to find a good place to live. And through all that you must've been lonely. School starts in 3 days, you know. And when it does, you'll get to see other kids. You get to make real friends Lily. And you won't need your imaginary friend anymore, ok?"
At that moment, a look of shock crosses her face. "No, I can't daddy! Matt won't like it at all!"
A hinge of annoyance crawls underneath his skin. "Look honey, Matt isn't real! Whether you like it or not, he is not a real person, and you shouldn't be letting your imagination get the best of you. It's not for your overall health."
"But daddy-"
"Listen to me!" He barked. "Matt is not real."
"And how would you know?!" Lily cried, tears streaming down her face. "You never even met him!"
"Of course I wouldn't." He yelled. "AND FROM NOW ON, I DON'T WANT TO HEAR HIS NAME EVER IN THIS HOUSEHOLD, DO YOU UNDERSTAND?"
She opens her mouth, in preparation to talk back. However, she couldn't. She wouldn't. There was no way she could talk back to him, or explain. It was hopeless.
"I hate you." And she turns, and runs back upstairs.
And everything was back the way it was. He sighs, and goes to finish some errands. What am I going to do with you, Lily?
A few hours later, he goes out to the store and buys a box of caramel chocolate. After what he had done, what he had said to his daughter he felt sorry. There was not way he could take back what was said. Hopefully this would get his daughters forgiveness.
As he headed upstairs, he walks to Lily's bedroom. Before he could raise a fist to knock, he then hears Lily's voice. "Don't worry Matt, daddy didn't mean it, I'm sure."
He sighs. And his knuckles hits the cold, bare door 2 times.
A few seconds later, the door opens a crack, and he sees Lily's head peer through. "Daddy?"
He forces a thin smile. "Hey Lily. Honey, about what happened earlier - I'm really sorry. I shouldn't have said some of the things I've said earlier. As a father, I should respect what you do. That's going to be a big part you'll need to learn as you grow up, but I don't wan't to give a bad influence of it, like earlier.
A grin was on her face. "It's okay daddy. I forgive you!"
He chuckles. "That's good.And uh...."
He scratches his head nervously. "Does Matt forgive me too?"
She then has her back at him for a few seconds, before turning back. A disappointed look was her response.
"No." She shook. "Matts still very mad at you."
"Ahh, I see." He shrugs. "Well anyway, here's some caramel chocolate I'd promise to give you."
A sudden thud heard on the other door makes him jump. Lily brisky turns back in shock.
"Honey what's going on in there-"
"Nothing!" She says, blocking him from peering into her room. "It's Matt who wanted the caramel chocolate."
"Oh right, Matt." He then handed his daughter the case of chocolates, before heading back down. But jsut then he is cut short.
"Daddy?"
He turns back. "Yes"
She hesitated. "W-will we have to...move again?"
He then pauses, and thinks hard.
"I don't know honey. We might, but I'm sure that won't happen."
"Okay!" She replies. "Matt hates it when we have to move so much."
He laughs. "Ahh, I see. Alright then, I'll be in the garage if you need me, okay Lily?"
~
A few minutes later, he was almost done. The shelf he was trying to fix for weeks was nearly done now. Only a few bolts left to screw in and he would be done.
All at once, he hears a small creak from behind. He turns, and sees his daughter standing there in the hallway. Her shadow casts a thick figure on the gravel floor. A case of chocolates is in her hands.
"Lily?" He says.
She then walks up to him, the same bright cheery expression of hers returned. She then raises the box of chocolates, as though offering it to him.
He stares into the case, before actually getting the message.
"Oh, thanks Lily." He says, taking off one of his gloves. He takes a small-round powdered chocolate, and places it in his mouth. The sweet, soft texture melts soothingly on his tongue. Indeed, they were good.
"Thanks honey." He says, turning back to her. But, all at once he sees her standing there, tears dwelling from her eyes.
He frowns. "Honey? What's wrong?"
She sniffs. "I'm sorry daddy."
He was confused. "Wait why-"
Suddenly, it struck. His body froze, unable to move, and he collapses. The world around him becomes blurry. What what happening to him?!
His eyes move back to his own daughter, who was now a faded blurr. His sight was blurred. All he could see now, was her feet, slowly backing away from him. She then turns, and runs towards the doorway. There, she then says aloud, "Okay Matt...I did it. I gave him the chocolate."
At that moment, another shadow slowly looms into the doorway, beside where hers was.
Once the figure is revealed, he has already lost sight. His breathing had stopped. And he was dead.
Lily then walks up to her dead father's corpse, and lightly kicks it with her bare foot. Seeing then he was fully dead, she turns back to the figure. "It's okay Matt. We won't have to move again now!"
She smiles. "So what do you want to do know?"
There was a pause. Lily then nodded gleefully. "I agree. Let's go get some chocolate!"
