hello! my name is everett (IGNORE MY USERNAME PLZ), and this is my guide to taiko!
to avoid clutter, each section is inside of a spoiler box:

let's get started!
what is taiko?
taiko is a gamemode in osu where you have to hit red and blue drum notes. this mode uses 4 keys, 2 keys for each color. the default keys are zxcv (zv for blue, xc for red).
for big notes, press both keys for its color at once (zv for blue, xc for red).
drumrolls are the taiko version of sliders. they are yellow colored, and to hit drumrolls, repeatedly press the red keys (x c x c x c x c) in order until the drumroll ends.
dendens, also known as shakers, are taiko's spinners. to hit them, press all 4 keys in red-blue order (such as x v c z x v c z x v c z) until the number reaches 0.

difficulty curve
ㅤnew beginnings - 0-decimal stars & 1 stars
your taiko journey usually begins at the preinstalled taiko maps and/or featured artist maps. you should play difficulties that are 1 stars, maybe 0-decimal stars if you're a really slow learner (no offense, i'm one too because of my autism.)
at this level, maps will usually have simple, single-beat patterns. complex patterns in music will likely be simplified, whether it be through less notes or by the usage of measure-lasting drumrolls or shakers.
as for the length of songs, i recommend binging short-length maps like the kola kid songs or harumachi clover.
2 stars
at 2 stars,
(write later)
to get the rhythms, i'd recommend:
camellia - Can I add you on bassbook? lol
this map's rather unfinished but if you're not worried about the note colors then this should help you get a hang of the general rhythms.
making progress - 3 stars
now at the stage of 3 stars, you'll need to synchronize both hands. so before you take on 3 stars, try doing 2 star muzus (difficulties that are 2 stars but labeled as a muzukashii in the spread) to learn the basic 1-color triplets.

what skin/keybinds/etc should i use?
ㅤuse whatever you are comfortable with. skin, keybinds, etc are personal preference and are your decision.
what are the layouts for keybinds?
ㅤtaiko keybinds have different layouts. each layout has its own nickname.
d = don (red note)
k = katsu (blue note)
kddk simulates the taiko drum onscreen, with the red keys being the middle of the drum and the blue keys being the rim of the drum. the current default keybind in osu!stable (zxcv) has a kddk layout.
ddkk is a layout where you have two buttons next to eachother per color. an example of a ddkk keybind is the osu!laser default keybind (dfjk, where d+k are the red keys and k+l are the blue keys). the red keys are on the left side of the keyboard, and the blue keys are on the right.
kkdd is basically the same except the positions of red and blue are swapped. an example of kkdd is a keybind i tried once, zxnm.
i invented my own layout once while messing around with keybinds trying to figure out which one was just right for me, and i call it the "up-down layout". the up-down layout is where you have your red keys underneath your blue keys, resembling red notes being used for lower pitched sounds and blue notes being used for higher pitched sounds. the keybind was klop (k+l for red, o+p for blue).

what maps should i play?
ㅤ(this list isn't difficulty-specific, this is just for any skill level. difficulty-specific recommendations will be inside of the difficulty curve box once it's finished...)
here's a handy collection of pattern practice maps made by someone else! i use these pretty often and think they'd be helpful.
osu will have pre-installed maps, i believe 8 for standard and 4 for the other modes. if you want to download more maps, use the osu website (or you can use the direct search ingame if you have supporter.
here is a collection of maps i suggest checking out.

there is a lot of maps in this box!!!
you do not have to download all of these. pick and choose whatever maps you want.
[owo] = censor for a wonky word that i don't wanna risk getting this thread shut down over
if a song appears multiple times, that means it's a different map of the same song. i prefer downloading multiple maps of the same song, as they provide different ways to enjoy the song.

when searching for more maps, try searching for songs you like. i recommend enabling the "recommended difficulty" option if you're searching via website.
what does this update button mean?
if you see a "update to latest version" button when looking at the leaderboard, that means the mapper has updated the map. just click the button to get the latest version.
this might also appear because you modified the map in the editor.
if the notes seem offbeat, try going to the website and redownloading the map. the mapper might have updated the audio file.
if it says "not submitted", it is most likey because the mapper updated the metadata, which is basically the song title/artist/source/difficulty names/tags. you will have to redownload the map if this is the case.
also make sure to check the map's website page every now and then, they might have added new difficulties.

the notes are blurry!! i can't see anything!!
ㅤif you find a map scrolling too fast, the song BPM is probably high. i recommend playing lower BPM if the higher ones are too fast for you. alternatively, you can enable EZ in the mod menu, but doing this will subtract from the score you get on the map.
what are the difficulties called?
ㅤthe difficulty names in taiko are different from the standard ones. the difficulty names are:
shoshinsha = beginner (not that many maps have this)
kantan = easy
futsuu = normal
muzukashii = hard
oni = insane
inner/ura oni = expert
hell oni = master
ura onis tend to be more challenging than inner onis.
some maps tend to have the highest difficulty named as something that isn't listed above. the custom name the difficulty uses will most likely relate to the song.
shoshinshas are mainly used when the difficulties have higher star rating (such as 2* kantan, 3* futsuu, etc) and the mapper wants a full difficulty spread.
example: Transciever FX
i recommend playing shoshinshas and kantans first. maybe even futsuus if you're confident enough.

why do i keep failing?
ㅤyou may have noticed your HP is empty when you first start playing a map, and that hitting notes raises it. in taiko, you need to fill your HP to at least 50% to pass a map.
what are converts?
maps in standard mode have the ability to be played in the other modes. in order for this to work, the game automatically converts the map to a different-mode version. these are called converts
converts are usually disliked by taiko players because they often don't reflect the actual gameplay of the mode, as they don’t meet the quality standards from mode-specific maps, and might confuse newer players. for example, taiko conversion is judged by hitsounds. so, if a map has no hitsounds, all notes will be red notes. if the map only has sliders, every note will be a drumroll. the list goes on.

how do i find out if the map is a convert?
one way is look at the difficulty names. taiko maps usually follow this difficulty naming scheme:
shoshinsha = beginner
kantan = easy
futsuu = normal
muzukashii = hard
oni = insane
inner/ura oni = expert
hell oni = master
another way is to see if there is an icon next to the song title. standard maps have no icon, taiko has a drum icon, catch has an apple icon, and mania has a piano icon.
