Included maps and further tutorial

It's not exactly easy to get into osu! without a friend showing you the basics. I have 2 suggestions to solve this problem.

1) Include some maps in the game download, similar to the tutorial map that comes with the download. Perhaps 10 easy (1-3 star) maps.

2) Add another tutorial (again, similar to the current tutorial) that teaches new people how to import songs/maps into osu!, or simply extend the current tutorial.

I think this will really help new players. New recruits are almost dependent on a friend showing them the basics of osu! at the moment, in order for the full potential of the game to be clear within the first hour after downloading. These additions will increase growth, and motivate people to spread osu! because the hassle of teaching their friends how osu! works is partially - if not fully - removed.

Thoughts?

1) Has been discussed here: t/87006

Bundled songs will never happen unless I have the rights to use them. Therefore, if this is going to go anywhere, the list needs to be of beatmaps using creative commons or equally licensed songs.

Other than that, I would suggest a wiki page with an updated list of beginner-friendly songs which could be linked from the osu! download page.
2) Not sure if this is really necessary.

t/109137 would this help?

This game is not rocket science. I figured everything out by my(lonesome)self.

Lies! Add second peppy tutorial and teach streaming/alternating and what-not. A starter beatmap pack would be useful to prevent new people from downloading crappy 2008 maps

Seriously, I found everything I needed myself. And even IF you don't know where to get maps, you will most likely ask in the ingame chat, which will then lead you directly to the map listing and the beatmap pack page, which THEN tells you the following:

I mean seriously.

There was a tutorial?

Uh, you do realize that this doesn't make much sense?
Streaming and alternating depends on the person entirely and can be completely refused. A tutorial is there to teach you how the game works, not to show you 5 million ways of how to play it.
Also crappy 2008 maps, well I give you that they certainly aren't top quality, but they for sure have their value and are still fun to a lot of people, so biased comments should not be taken into an official guide either.
TheVileOne
I don't understand that fully. peppy can host the download of copyrighted material, but he can't package it with the game itself. Is this an it's up to you to not download copyrighted beatmaps kind of thing?
MillhioreF
Site owners get in a lot less trouble for hosting user-uploaded copyrighted content than hosting it of their own volition. The most they can do right now is order the copyrighted content to be taken down, while if peppy hosted some himself then I think they might be able to sue him or the site directly. Don't quote me on that though, I'm not an expert in the field.

Oh lolcubes pls be more understanding. It would be an official "advanced" tutorial that teaches players about stream basics, maybe give different BPMs to work and practice with in the same beatmap. I mean, the current tutorial pretty much teaches everything you need to know except for streaming... and learning streaming is a must once you get into [Hard] territory.

Then, the official osu download page would have a link to a pack full of easily-readable beatmaps. That probably means no 2008 map except for maybe a couple. Geez its almost like you guys have never tried to introduce the game to a person who has never played a music game before. When you are completely new to the game/genre, you dont even know what "ranked" and "graveyarded" mean. I love some 2008 maps but lets be realistic here, most of them are not good examples for newbies.

See its all about making the game more accessible, more "attacheable". You shouldn't have to probe around online forums/wikis or talk to a bunch of strangers to get the best game experience. It should all be bundled with the game itself when you download it. You still have to look up for new maps in the website, thats true, but requiring you to enter the forums or use the IRC function is a big no-no in my opinion, specially with how agressive and insensitive or just outright stupid forum/irc users can be at times.

I never played an other rhytm games. It took me like 1 hour to understand all the basics of osu!
This is simply not needed.

Not sure if you missed my point. My point is that you are bringing something which can be done in so many ways and still not fit well for the player. That is not a guide or a tutorial because it doesn't help or teach you squat if it doesn't work for you.
As for streaming, I was alternating mouse buttons when I was still new. Do you seriously need a guide to tell you to use another key if you can't click fast enough with your primary one? Seriously?

Apologies if you think of this post as harsh, however I just can't find the usefulness in the idea.
Blaziken
When I started osu! I didn't know I could use two keys. So when I finally figured this out I had to relearn how to stream. ;_; Painfull experience.
CXu
Being able to use two keys, and the keyboard might be something to add to a tutorial actually. I never knew either until I watched Cyclone SS Justice to Believe on youtube :P
Tshemmp
I learned you can use keys for clicking as soon as I checked the input options after a few days.

Well thats just you. I bet you loved playing the game the moment you first played it; I didn't. Honestly, I think the game is somewhat boring until you can play and beat hard and insanes. Thats where the game gets really fun to play, where it gets somewhat addicting. Theres a reason why most mappers have the most fun making the hardest difficulties for their song.

The goal I'm trying to plant here to is to shorten the time it takes to move from [Easy] and [Normal] to [Hard+] and [Insanes]. If the average player, who is not the same as a forum poster, takes too long to learn the game well enough to move into Insanes, he or she will just get bored and quit and contribute nothing. An advanced tutorial, made by peppy himself and included in the game could help greatly in that regard. But first we have to get off the assumption that the average player is like us and can learn the game by themselves.

See, when we talk about OSU growth, we shouldn't really talk about the number of new accounts made each day or month or whatever. We should talk about the number of people who start playing insanes each month or day. THAT is where true growth comes from. People who play insanes WILL undoubtedly see why the game is fun and consequently they will promote more growth by recommending the game to other people, and maybe even contribute to the community and overall fun by making new maps.
MMzz
I don't see the point. There are plenty of threads about beginner maps, there are beginner beatmap packs, every map (besides approval) has an easy/normal approved to be playable by a newbie by a BAT. Downloading maps is not hard and the tutorial teaches you everything you need to know (How to click the circles, how spinners/sliders work), applying these things you learn into stuff like streams and jumps(etc) depends on how you approach it, not how a tutorial tells you how to do it. And there are so many things to learn pattern wise these days because people are getting more creative, It would be almost impossible for us to put it all together into a single tutorial.
Wishy
I don't know what's going on, but from my experience, most of my friends played the tutorial, downloaded a couple random maps, failed because of any reason (2008 map, or very hard map) and ended up dropping the game. Tutorial is way too basic and it is true that a better one would be a good thing. Same with some new pack including 10/20 maps which are recommended for newbies. Most players don't come and look for help@forums, so no, having a thread with those maps is pointless.

People get more into a game when they get guidance from the game itself, if you're just starting and got to find your way through everything then you are highly likely to quit. Downloading the game and getting a recommendation during the tutorial telling you to download certain X pack which contains a few good maps for newbies (and several music genres) would be really helpful. This is a proven point and you will see how most popular games pretty much drive you through the game for days or even weeks if not months or forever, friendly games are harder to drop.

t/5456 This is actually a decent collection of maps. If you don't mind old that is.
TakuMii
There should at least be something that tells players that they can use the keyboard. There are several people I know just started that didn't know they could use the keyboard until I told them/they watched me play.

I'd love to see an updated version of that.
