ZHP is a dungeon crawler. I'd say SRPGs are closer than Dungeon crawlers, myself. Granted, they're all in the same boat. Turn-based, not turn-based, whatever. Party size 1, party size 10, whatever. Movement field, no movement field, whatever. The more distinctions you make the harder it is to draw the line, until we can no longer say for sure whether or not Grandia falls into the SRPG bucket because it has AOEs and movement and the like.

I just spent, like, 70 out of the last 120 hours playing Nier, but I finally got that damn Plat. All for the sake of getting my $16 back by beating it within a week. I think I'm clinically insane.

Shadows of the Damned is pretty fucking awesome, guys. Like it really, really is. The weapons are pretty sweet and each one has its uses. Like, you don't just go through the game using just one gun. I find myself switching it up pretty frequently. And the bosses are those "expose the weakpoint" type bosses like in Zelda, and I love that. There's even a few 2D shooter sections for literally no reason. Like the characters mention it, but they don't question it.
Anyway, that being said, don't spend $60 on it. You can beat this game in a day, two days tops. There is no New Game+. There is no Chapter Select. It still beats inFamous 2 though.

Well, you don't have to post your game list or even your PSN ID. It's just, you know, if you want to. Although it's always interesting to see what games other people have.
Anyway, so I was totally gonna get Eternal Sonata, but now that I actually wanna get it, my Gamestop stopped having it. So I got stuck with Red Dead Redemption, which, by the way, hasn't been as good as I was expecting so far.

In all honesty, Eternal Sonata is not that great. The combat system is reasonably fun, but the game is otherwise just so plain. Dungeon, Boss, Rinse, Repeat. You just do the same thing over and over again but with a different scenario each time.

There aren't a lot of games coming out right now (that I feel like spending $60 on), so I'm going through a bunch of games that I feel will probably be lame, but possibly fun. I'm somtimes surprised at what turns out to be fun for me. Also, I kinda feel the need for some more RPG. I thought the Dungeon Siege III demo was enjoyable, but it's at $60, so screw it. RPGs don't really have to be fun and exciting for me to play them a lot, as we can plainly see with my FFXIII Plat.
Have you played the Disgaea series at all? Because that's a great way to kill about 400 hours (if you're a completionist but only play each game once). All 3 Disgaeas are good, though I'd go for the PSP version of Disgaea 1 and 2 if you have the choice.
Just played the Sonic Generations demo. A lot of fun for a 2 minute demo (if you're a slowpoke like I am). Makes me wonder how such a short demo had such a large (660MB) file size. Pretty much worth it for the Green Hill tune though.

I don't even have a PSP. And again, I'm not big on tactical RPGs. I mostly like action RPGs and stuff, like Star Ocean, Tales, Resonance of Fate, and Kingdom Hearts (if that counts). Eternal Sonata was only an impulse purchase due to how the graphics looked (first of its kind on the western PS market anyhow) but besides the initial couple of hours playing it, not too much else is done with it besides collecting dust.
The only tactical RPG(s) I have thoroughly enjoyed would have to be Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days (prefer it still above the first and third) and Final Fantasy VIII.
Anyone remember how hyped up Kane & Lynch was and look what happened in the end there.
For me a big thing is replayability, was it actually worth the $100-110?

Yeah, I found a way to take away the only fun I was having in the game. Going out into the wilderness and hunting animals is kind of fun every now and then, but I only did that to slowly make money. Then I found out you can do this one mini-game over and over again and get ridiculous amounts of cash really fast. And the mini-game is just pressing a button combination really fast and the combination never changes. The only thing I like about RDR so far is the main character. He's just a cool dude.
But anyway, yeah, I only got RDR cause I got it for $27 and I have the opportunity to get my money back if it sucks, which I will do. Oh, and I probably won't get a Vita unless they come out with something fantastic. So far the only good games for it are spin-offs of console games, which is basically what the PSP did a lot.

Disgaea 1 you can do in 40 hours, but might take 80 if you need to learn the system and figure out how to optimize character building. That's really what the Disgaea series is all about; building your character's stats. Unlike other games such as FFT/Tactics Ogre which try to throw in tricky terrain and weather conditions, Disgaea's main game is "make characters super strong, then obliterate everything". There isn't really a focus on strategy until you hit the land of carnage or dark world (the dark world is interesting because it turns some levels into a puzzle game instead of an SRPG)

So I finally did a co-op playthrough last night. We almost got fucked in the graveyard in level 7 because we didn't realize for about 5 minutes that we had to kill the four Mouths. Even after we did, it wasn't until, like, level 9 that we finally realized what Mouths even did. Jeez...
I think from now on everyone who makes a comment about a game should specify what game they're talking about. This thread has been difficult to follow for a very long time.
Talking about Dead Nation. Yeah the last checkpoint in the Graveyard is kind of a bitch, unless you have flares and shotguns. Throw a flare and shotgun the walls then shotgun the mouths. Then switch to SMG, mow everything down, rinse and repeat. Or, if you have the Launcher, blow the fuck out of the walls.
Or, if you're on multiplayer, have one person crowd control while the other deals with the mouths. Since multiplayer isn't any harder than single player. It's literally just two people in a single player game.

It was easy once we realized what we were supposed to do. By the time we figured it out, we had wasted all of our good ammo and just about every single throwable item. Then my buddy died after we killed the last mouth and I had to do the rest myself. By the way, I hate it when Jumpers come out of the sky and don't even give you a chance to dodge.
Yeah, the later levels throw quite the amount of dick moves at you.
Anyway, beat the game with my friend the other day, I died in the middle of the last section and my friend just mowed down everything while I watched. Also, the Shocker is way OP.

1400?! I didn't know people were that good, the most my friend and I got to was 300 or maybe a tad higher. Course, we kinda sucked, but still, we thought 300 was high when we were playing.

The most I got was high 600s. Then one or both of us would catch ourselves on fire, usually because of a bad Rush, flamethrower, or Molotov (or rather, moe-low-tove), and send it down to 1. It's ridiculous how much that drains your multiplier.

I'm still stuck on a level in the Dark world in Disgaea 2. It's one of them where there's a single enemy prinny in a disconnected area of land, and you have no-pickup/throw + no special + no attack geopanels everywhere.
Makes me sad; especially since the dark sun has an insta-game over on like the 7th turn (which isn't really that bad, but still)
So far I've spent about 100 hours on Dark Hero Days (lv2000thief (YEAAAAAAAAH)), and I spent a couple of hundred hours on Disgaea DS. I want to get around to finishing the PSP version, if only for the dialogue/voice acting.
I've got Disgaea 3 but haven't had much opportunity to play it, as I don't currently have a PS3. Oh irony.
Play on Normal or Braindead, and max your rifle out asap. It's very easy. The highest combo I ever had was 7 or 8 thousand. But the hits you take to your multiplier are percentage based, so the higher your combo, the more you lose. A simple weak-zombie scratch starts taking off like 200x
I'm rushing through the game on Normal for kicks (playing the game just for the hell of it, rather than trying to get all loot, or no damage, or whatever) is so much fun. I'd say the achievements actually ruin the experience if you have the need to collect them (I do) but fortunately that's only 1 or 2 slow-paced runs through the game. Just not giving a fuck what happens makes the game WAY more fun.
After maxing the rifle, I'd work on the machine gun and the shotgun at a ratio of 2:1. Once those are upgraded to the max (give or take clip and max ammo - level those up, but don't bother with the last couple upgrades until down the road) start saving your money for the Shocker. The Shocker is shit for special infected, but is unrivalled at taking out all manner of zombie (weak, fat, military...the works). You can take out a crowd of 40 military infected in about four seconds with the shocker. With the rifle, that's 320 bullets. That's like 2 or 3 minutes of shooting. The shocker just tears them in half.

Man, I thought RDR was super boring and I hated the game, right? I just finished a playthrough of Dungeon Siege III and I thought that was super boring, too. But for some reason, I totally loved DS3. It doesn't make any sense.
So any of you guys played the Uncharted 3 beta?
Honestly, something just felt off about the whole thing to me. The climbing felt buggy, the combat felt slow, and fist cuffs never worked. I remember played Uncharted 2 multi and thought it was a blast, but the beta just wasn't.

I've had too many games which were supposed to just be 'beta' but turned out to be exactly the same in full release.state, which pisses me off greatly considering there have been too many games I've had some amount of hope for with the premise of being something fun only to complete back-flip and turn out to be horrible.
A nice example of this would have to be Haze.

Well it's a good thing I don't care about MP then. I'm glad they're saving the awesome for stuff that really matters.
Dungeon Siege is a Kill-Shit-Get-Loot game, in the vein of Champions of Norrath, Diablo, and Torchlight. Those games are dreadful to watch, monotonous in their description, and lackluster in their presentation. But where they get you is in the sharp gameplay. Yeah, but this game is even pretty weak from a KSGL standpoint. Like, you get loot a lot, but most of it is crap and it's not fun sifting through the crap and selling it back. And then like, there's not a lot of oh-my-God-totally-awesome stuff cause it's all designed to be in tiers and stuff so the stats are equal, but put into different categories and stuff. Like minus 10 attack, plus 10 will. And even when you think you're super buffed up and shit, there's not a lot of difference, except with obvious changes like your health and crit percentage. It's hard for me to play that game for more than an hour or two at a time since you have to spend so much time looking at stats and seeing if anything's better and stuff.
And yet, despite all of that, I still love it. It's just a fucking conundrum.

Do you guys want to know the true definition of insanity? It's the state of mind you're in after playing the second-to-last level of Joe Danger 297 times without beating it. This game is awesome, but holy shit, everyone involved with this game needs to be shot for making it so hard to get 100%

No, I specifically chose to play Joe Danger on my alt account because that's what it's for. I knew Joe Danger would be hard, so I didn't want to force myself to get 100% if I didn't want to. I had no way of knowing that I would get so determined to get 100% in that game. I've actually got 2 plats on an account that's not supposed to have any. And I've almost got a 3rd as well. It's like, it's still my account, and I still got the trophy, so that's good enough for me.

Unless you're trying to get the Plat. Then it's infuriating. I hecka liked going into military bases and stealth killing everyone I possibly could. Like, they are the worst soldiers ever.
Anyway, I sure am glad I was able to get Wipeout HD as well, cause that game is pretty fun. I'm not much of a racing game guy, but I like this one. At least I like it more than I liked Super Stardust HD.

I found the plat easy, but hated getting the sphere things. Unless you're marking them from the getgo, you're stuck with one left and a lot of frustration.

I liked getting the collectibles, but Platting the events was annoying and doing the game on Hard was just lame at times.
Final boss on Hard. I remember that being a nightmare. Difficult + timed.

Yeah, he sucked dick. Like he was hard enough just by himself, but then you get that strict time limit and it's ridiculous. And if you accidentally blew up the helicopters in the first half of the fight, you weren't gonna get him on your first try at all. Also, that Elizabeth fight was so stupid. It took a stupid long time to kill her and you had to fight off an endless supply of hunters.
You jerks talking shit about Eternal Sonata need to back off, okay. Such a good battle system; it more than made up for the mediocrity of the storyline.

Wow. I'm so glad I was able to get Wipeout HD in addition to Super Stardust HD, because I would've made the completely wrong decision if I had just gotten Stardust. I spent more time and had more fun with Wipeout than I usually have with most of the $60 games I get.

Wipeout HD was one of the titles I was eagerly awaiting for release on the PSN the moment I found out it wouldn't be a disc-based release which was a let-down due to not having a way to get items off the store back then but nonetheless it was well worth the wait I had to endure.
It's also one of the only games I actually enjoy using the Sixaxis controls to go through in, even in the Phantom class races.

Am I the only one here who really enjoyed Stardust? I even got the DLC for it (which seemed like a rip off since Wipeout got it's DLC with it when you got it free) and I find it so fun trying to avoid all the crap that gets thrown at you.

So for the first time ever, I actually have been playing Half-Life 2 on Steam. I always thought it'd suck because the first one really sucked, but this game is surprisingly fun despite being 7 years old. I mean, I don't think I need to tell anyone that it's a good game, but it's just that I've finally been convinced of that. I still think it's a little bit overhyped, but whatever. It was probably the shit when it first came out.
Every time I get a new machine I play through Half Life 2. It was amazing for its time, and it's still great for the present. Largely because it isn't a cover-based shooter.

I like it because it's quite varied for an FPS. It's not just room after room of enemies and crap. Like there's some physics-based puzzle shit and that's cool. But like, you've got that whole section with the riverboat and that was really fun, then you've got that sort of zombie level, and now I'm doing the dune buggy level and that's been pretty fun, especially when you have to shoot down the gunships. I kinda wish there was more suit power around, but whatever, no biggie. I think this game would probably suck a lot more on the console. Like, I love consoles, but I don't know how I could do this game on one. Just makes it easier to shoot guys from farther away, which is really good since I can't zoom and shoot.

Yeah, I already did the crane part. Or at least the crane part where you lower the bride and pull your car up. I kinda hated how the magnet swung around whenever you moved it, so you'd usually have to wait for it to stop swinging if you needed to be precise. But whatever. I'm at the part just after picking up the crossbow and I took down the energy wall there. Also, I've been doing the achievements in this game for kicks and there's one for destroying 6 gunships, and I've taken down 2, the one at New Little Odessa and the one along the highway, but the game decided to only credit me for one of those kills. Lame.
Try the crane part in Synergy. Goooooooood times.
Also I don't want to spoil it (and nobody else will either) but the last part of the game is also a ton of fun. It pretty much takes what you've been wanting to do the whole game (in my case) and lets you do it.

I finally beat the Half-Life 2 series, so I went down and got Eternal Sonata. I have to agree with Ival, this game is pretty sweet so far. The English voice acting is a little bit terrible, but the combat is really sweet.
So yeah. I have a PS3 now, kinda. I guess I'll play through Disgaea3, now that I have the opportunity.

Yeah, I wanna unlock counterattacks and the second set of special attacks. I'm not gonna be happy about my infinite tactical time going away though. And losing a second on my action gauge is gonna suck.

Well, I just started chapter 5 and I can do counterattacks and Harmony Chains now, so those are cool. Counterattacks are cool if you can actually pull them off. Jazz is the best character in the game, so I'm just waiting to get him back. Viola is overpowered and awesome as well. Salsa and March are kinda cool, but they die way too fast. And Claves is the most useless RPG character I've encounted...probably ever. I mean, as far as combat is concerned.
Anyway, FUCK FUGUE. That guy was a baaaastarrrrrrd. I've never seen such a cheap enemy in this game. That was such a difficulty spike and it made me waste so many Angel Trumpets. And you have to fight him with some of the most killable party members in the game. Ugh.
But yeah, I haven't actually put that many hours into it. I tend to play it for a little bit, then pause it for a couple of hours while I do other stuff, then play it some more. The fights are kind of draining and the story isn't really pulling me along, so I don't play for too long at a time. Also, is it just me, or is Fred a pedophile? He's always hanging around the underaged ones more than the adults.
Edit: Oh yeah, and after the holiday rush of games, I'm probably gonna get Star Ocean 4. I was gonna get it instead of Eternal Sonata, but they didn't have it for once.

Star Ocean 4 is awful, make sure you finish Eternal Sonata first.

No, I do use March, mostly because it's one of those split sections you're talking about, but the only thing that bugs me is her attack style. I like how Salsa's attacks are more smooth and consistent. But I like that March can get a nice echo amount from her specials. And I rather don't mind Beat mainly because he can get about 12-16 echoes with very little effort and his long distance specials are decent. I'm not crazy about Falsetto. She's near the bottom of my list at the moment. I like some of her specials, but she doesn't have enough health and doesn't get quite enough echoes. Also, I base a lot of my preference on whether or not the character has really awesome-looking specials, and Jazz has my favorite of anyone's so far. I love how he treats that sword like a twig and gets a ridiculous hit radius. He can almost hit dudes behind him. It's crazy.
And yeah, I'm mostly looking at Star Ocean 4 because I know it has a fucking retarded Plat, so I wanna see how close I can get to that before giving up.

Falsetto gets a gauntlet later that doubles her combo count when she strikes, so each hit is worth 2 hits. Coupled with her insanely fast attack speed and movement speed, she just sort of puts mobs in a blender. Also like all of her good skills cause some sort of knockback/knockdown which is great for reducing the brunt of the next enemy's onslaught. Also Snow Claw looks awesome.

That would be pretty good. I still like Jazz for his ability to easily hit two enemies at once and getting two hits per strike. We'll see how awesome she is with those gloves though. I hate waiting until the end of a game for a character to stop sucking though. Apparently Claves is really good when you get her back, but at that point, who cares?
There are a lot of good gauntlets on the way there, too. I think there's one that increases action gauge when you hit an enemy as well, so she gets to throw in a few more punches each round. Also a couple that slow an enemy while attacking.

Dude, Retto's best weapon sounds so good. 100% crit rate and action gauge increases with hits? Awesome. Actually, that second effect is so subtle that I don't even bother with it. I've got a Pocket Watch that does that and I put it on Salsa, but it barely did anything. Falsetto's weapon really is probably one of the best weapons though. I can't wait to get an accessory that lets me do that so I can put it on March.

Oh my God, Ival, do you have any expert advice on actually succeeding in a counterattack? I know I can only counter the first attack of an enemy's turn, but it's so random when they'll ACTUALLY let me counterattack. I can't predict it, so I can't be fast enough to counterattack. I've pulled it off once and that was pure luck. I'm thinking I'll just stop trying forever because the payoff isn't big enough.
Well, the counterattack sound is usually what I focus on. If you're in a situation where you'll die if you don't guard, just don't even bother with the counterattack. Not sure if you're at the point where your buttons start getting randomized after every enemy action yet; I can't remember which party level that's at.
The payoff is pretty huge, but the risk is about just as high.There are plenty of monsters that can easily wipe out a character in a single assault, and if that character's already damaged it can probably be done through their guard. Completely cancelling an enemies' attack and getting a free quick turn is really nice. Especially when you're dealing with asshole bosses. I think the more you get used to it, you'll find you actually have a bit of time to decide between counter and guard. Of course, it requires you to be very familiar with boss timings as well. Yeah, see, before I unlocked counterattack, I eventually started just watching the word Guard and hit it when it lit up. Waiting for it to pop up took too long and sometimes I had no idea who was even being attacked and the camera angles would fuck it up even if I did know. And the sound appears a little bit after the word popped up. But this method doesn't really work that well with counterattack, because now I'm used to just hitting guard the second I see the word light up. Sometimes I'll see Counterattack and hit Guard anyway out of habit. Then if I try to hit counterattack instead, it's not available and I get hit. The timing for some attacks is ridiculous. I don't even have time to hit Guard sometimes, let alone decide whether or not I should hit Counterattack instead.
Also, it's level 6 where you get Moving Command. I think it's optional on the first playthrough, so I will probably skip it cause a friend told me you can change party levels in Encore.

That's a terrible idea. Party level 6 is the best. The randomized commands takes a little while to get used to but you get an insane amount of item slots, the ability to do 6 harmony chains, and echoes carry over between battles.Seibei4211 wrote:

How is that a terrible idea? The first playthrough is absolutely useless and a waste of time. The real game doesn't even start until Encore mode. If I have to lose all of my items and level progress, why should I give a shit about the first playthrough? I'm getting the score pieces and costumes and stuff, but if it doesn't carry over, I don't care about it.
And I end most battles with a special anyway, so carrying over 0 echoes isn't very helpful.

Uhh, specials still build echoes? Unless you finish every fight with a 1 hit special. Which seems a bit arbitrary!

I've been doing pretty fine without Level 6 so far. And I usually end the match with a healing spell if I can, just to stay fresh. Viola's the only one I use Harmony Chains with so I can Sacred Strike/Healing Arrow. When I get 3 chains, I could throw in something else though. But even if I did start the match with Echoes, it's not very helpful anyway. Battles already take too much concentration as it is, so I don't feel like adding more to it. It's not like I'm playing this game because I'm totally into it. It's not something I feel like mastering or completing to 100%. I'm just killing time until school starts up again.

Oh man, Falsetto really is pretty good. Tyr's Left Arm (action gauge increases with hits) + Werewolf Choker (double echoes) + Speed Shoes = 32 Echoes in one turn. And I've gotten better at counterattacks. I just pay attention during the first attack of an enemy's turn. Counterattacks got really awesome now that I can use special attacks in them.
Falsetto's the bitchy one with the platinum-ish hair, right? Blue dress, if I recall? She was kind of cool.

Yeah, she's the one. She completely sucks all the way up until the point where she gets Tyr's Left Arm, then she starts kicking monumental ass. Serenade is pretty beast, too. I underestimated her. Her Expello attack can do over 140k damage with 32 echoes. Crazy.

Jazz is still probably my favorite. No one can do anything to match his attack radius, he's got crazy attack power, powerful/flashy specials, ridiculous amounts of HP and defense, and he's not bad at echoes. Also, he's just a badass. The only thing he sucks at is speed. When you first get Falsetto, she's no better at echoes than Beat, and at least Beat can do that from across the map. And all of her other stats were weak aside from speed.

Falsetto still has kickin' damage, and being across the map only matters on like the first attack. Once she's in there she's in there. I really don't care about defense and as long as someone has average HP that's workable for me. Offense is way more important.

So I got Party Level 6 and this is waaaaay not as bad as I thought it'd be. When I heard of Moving Command, I thought it meant that it changed your shit around after EVERY attack. Like you couldn't do a combo without changing buttons. But since it only happens during a Harmony Chain and it moves right after you hit the right button, it's easy. I can still mash on the Special button to do a chain like I usually do. Easy, but annoying. Also, no one mentioned that you keep echoes after a Harmony chain, too.

Ok, I didn't know Encore mode was also a difficulty increase. Good thing I went for Party Level 6. Ival was totally right about that. I was right about Encore being the real game though. This is what an RPG is supposed to be like. You have to grind and work to be stronger than the enemies instead of walking in and being able to destroy everyone. There might even be some sort of strategy involved with some bosses. Cause seriously, I beat Annihilator in less than 2 minutes with no items and that's ridiculous. Maybe he might manage to kill someone on Encore.
Yeah, encore is the serious stuff. I still need to finish my run actually, I think Tuba on the bridge killed my spirit and motivation previously.

Yeah, I read that that guy was serious business. I'm gonna have to grind it up like a bitch to get through him. If only the game didn't split up your party all the time. Like now that I know Falsetto is good, it's gonna piss me off when I won't be allowed to use her forever.

Well, it's not so much that you have to, it's more that lenience is reduced to nearly zero on encore, so if you're not on point with your counter attacks and guards you'll probably end up dead.
Eternal Sonata is way more skill based than it is level based, aside from learning techniques, anyhow. If you can survive a round by the enemies you can probably win any fight; the rest is just threat mitigation.

When you guard/counter every attack and you're still getting massive damage, I don't see how that has anything to do with skill. And that wouldn't be a problem if you could actually heal yourself without items between battles, but I can only hold 99 Peach Cookies and that goes down quickly after a dozen fights. So when I got to Fort Fermata and kept getting brutally hurt after every single fight, I knew I wouldn't be able to get through the whole thing. I had to run all the way back to Agogo Village and kill goats until Viola hit level 15 for Heal Arrow. Now I'm doing pretty good. Took me a few hours to do all of that though. Very annoying.
Because levels wouldn't even be a factor if you weren't guarding/countering; you would just be dead. Levels are really only important for learning critical techniques.

HP and speed. I wouldn't want to be at 900 max HP still and I wouldn't want to attack last in every battle. And I have to be at a high level for guarding attacks to even save me from massive damage. And I'm not just talking about one single fight. I'm talking about when you have to fight a dozen fights in a row and they all take a chunk out of your HP with every fight. Before I got Heal Arrow, that wasn't going to ever work. I literally could not hold enough healing items to get me through that dungeon and Fred/Polka friggin' suuuuck at healing at level 12. The more accessories I get and the more abilities I get, the easier it'll be to get through this, but until I get the game-breaking Falsetto set-up, it's gonna be annoying.
