Rank gain without pp gain (I figured it out after using my brain)

I used my brain a bit and I think I figured it out. Near my rank everyone is barely 1 pp apart, so when playing these low SR//pp songs its calculated that I gain a fraction of a pp. So essentially my scores which I thought were completely ignored by osu were actually being added, which was just enough to gain rank. Weird.

So I decided to take it easy on osu considering arm pain, so I played some low SR songs intending to just have fun and listen to some music.

What I was not expecting was my rank to rise.




If you couldn't tell, my rank was 4921 yesterday and is 4916 today.

I noticed it in game, when I saw the +2 and +1s. I thought it was some glitch to do with old scores submitting, but they happened shortly after I submitted those low SR scores. Also, I haven't touched osu since my insane farming two days ago. I am flabbergasted. I've noticed this happen before as well, but didn't think too much of it. What's going on? I'm going to play some more low SR maps and see if it happens again

Edit: Wait are old accounts getting terminated or something is that whats happening?

I saw my accuracy rise from 96.00 to 96.01. The players around my rank aren't getting any rank gains, so it can't be old accounts getting removed. I noticed we are all within a few pp away, so perhaps these maps are getting weighted for a fraction of a PP which is causing me to gain rank?

No, its normal osu mania. I think I figured it out, but unless theres some other explaination...

The minor PP you gain here is bonus PP. It's a small amount that you get each time you play a map you've never played before. It's designed to give you up to 400pp after something like 10000 different maps, and weighed such that after the first couple maps you only get something like 0.3pp per new map, making it a very inefficient way to farm.

Huh, okay. So I guess there is some benefit to playing more maps, but not necessarily low SR maps. So eventually my bonus PP on my low SR scores is going to get overwritten by a bunch of 4 stars?

I mean. Theres also a lot more to being good at osu!mania and 4key vsrgs in general than grinding pp. In short the pp system for 4key is a joke.

So i propose, if youre going to grind out low diff charts for the miniscule pp output, why not use that as an opportunity to train acc. Plenty of good stuff in the 2 and 3star range that you should theoretically be capable of SSing.

Yes that's what I was initially doing in the first place lol. The other day I was messing around with super low scroll speed and HR and in that moment it hit me: I actually had to listen to the music in order to play the game. WOKE

HR is fun. Maybe someday they'll rank it. Hidden is ranked and doesnt impact score, why not HR?

Before HR becomes ranked there needs to be a way to convert various OD to common OD. Otherwise HR is kinda broken.

You dont need to do anything. Just give it a 1.0 score mod. An HR score is the same as a nomod score.

But getting a certain score with HR is generally harder than getting the same score without HR.

right. and more optimally, you'd factor that in. however that isnt the case. What i'm saying is if you're not going to even attempt to balance it, at least make it ranked without providing any form of score benefit. it'd just be a harder version of a nomod score on the same thing, but at least it'd submit to the leaderboards.

I use HR as a "I don't want to submit my shitty scores rn but I still want to play the song and log a replay" function. Like in multiplayer
