I've been playing Osu!mania recently, and I've been noticing weirdness in performance. On my 27", 144hz, 2560x1440 display with a Corsair K55 Membrane keyboard, I've been getting lower accuracy than my 13", 60hz, 1366x768 Lenovo laptop w/ built-in membrane keyboard. I've been trying low-profile keyboards on my desktop, but I don't seem to be able to recreate the performance unless I lower my Osu resolution but not Windows resolution. What are some ideas that could show why this is the case, or anything I should change for future play styles, such as type of monitor?

you're overthinking it, using a downscaled resolution tends to stretch screen elements and make them larger, which makes reading easier for some people. If thats the case for you, then use a downscaled resolution on your larger monitor.

Downscaling the monitor doesn't seem to fix much. I think I did notice the issue.

When I tried a low-quality low profile keyboard, I was able to do some patterns I've never been able to do on my desktop. I'm planning on switching from my K55 membrane keyboard to a Cooler Master SK50 Chiclet MX Red keyboard.

Could 27" 16:9 just be too big for Osu!mania?

Ok, so this is a keyboard issue. I made the transition from laptops (played for years on laptops) to a pc with a mech kb using mx red switches. It took a while to get used to it, and there are still some things I have issues with that I didn't used to on the mech kb, but there are also some things I'm noticeably better at with the mech kb, so it's really a tradeoff rather than an overall negative impact.

As for monitor size, you can always account for that by modifying your skin, or finding a skin that works better at hat size. I moved up from a 15 inch to a 17 inch laptop, then to a 24 inch monitor, and while it took me a bit to get used to it, it was fine after a bit.

Well, here was my logic: when playing on a smaller monitor compared to a larger one, the notes seem to have less motion blur. At least, this is the case from what I've seen between 13" and 27"

As for skins, my skin works perfect for me; I am unaware how to modify it to account for this, though.

It is also the fact with my monitor, that after changing in-game resolution from 2560x1440 to 1366x768 the blur decreased, macing it easier to play. Not much easier on the eyes, since everything is so much smaller. Is there a method to just decrease motion blur or something similar?

lower your scroll speed or increase note size, if you feel more "blur" on your better screen it just means it's smoother, if you cant read notes because it's too smooth, then you either need to practice more, lower your scroll speed or increase note size

what you're asking for right now is to lower your fps, which ig you can do if you want on options and lower fps cap, but I really believe you're just overthinking all of this, and all you need is to modify your skin/scroll speed to something more comfortable on those settings, rather than downgrading everything just to fit your skin

And to the point of reducing scroll speed: I play with flashlight mod. I use speed 14, which is about half of what I used before FL. There's a lot less blur at this speed, but it does take work to get used to it, so that's technically an option as well.

I run Osu!mania off of 144fps. Does this just mean that it is smoother, and sharper imaging would only be visible with lower framerates?

Now thinking about it, lowering scroll speeds will make it easier to play fast songs, but harder to play slow songs.

But back to what I was saying, will playing on a smaller monitor make the image sharper?

ye, my screen is 60hz so there's less frames, if you've 144hz it should be twice as smooth so everything should be clearer to see

what it seems you want is to make the game go slower, which I'm not sure if it's gonna be better in the long run, I really think is better if you just play a bit with the scroll speeds and modify your skin, changing judgement line for example, or just try other skins in general

Even if your monitor is 144Hz, it is recommended to disable vsync and run the game at a higher fps than 144fps (usually 500fps or higher is good enough). This is because the fps also affects the precision the game clients detects your input (in osu!lazer, the graphics fps is separate from the logic and input handling fps, so this wouldn't be the case anymore).

If this is configured correctly, you should see screen tearing while playing. The higher the fps, the more tears there are on the screen, but the smaller the difference between consecutive tears (so the effect is less noticeable overall). Having a screen with a high refresh rate also decreases screen tearing (144Hz is already on the high end of this, though).

As for reducing motion blur, you can try getting a better screen (though your screen is probably high end in this regard already).

You can also try to adjust the colors of your skin, screens usually have less ghosting when the pixels transition from dark-grey to bright-grey and vice-versa, compared to transitions from black to white (or very bright colors) and vice-versa, so you can try reducing the contrast between the notes and the background to reduce motion blur (note this actually can make things worse in some screens, if they employ some anti-ghosting techniques that can't handle this case well).

You can also try inverting the colors of your screen (so it is dark notes moving through a bright background, instead of the opposite), this might take a while to get used to, but it reduces the blur caused by vision persistence of your eyes. Reducing screen brightness overall also reduces blur by persistence of vision.

There is also the fact that on smaller screens, the notes seemingly fall slower than on a bigger one. If switching to a small monitor, the issue falls either when playing 7K or the fact that it is just generally harder to focus on.

After thinking about it, I believe the issue is my keyboard. The difference between a laptop and a desktop is the travel distance for keys. I might get low profile speed keys, with 1mm activation.
