I had another question; about how long does it take to ship to the US?
Topic Starter
montymintypie
About 1.5 weeks seems standard - express post unfortunately adds about $20 to the cost.

If you're unlucky it can take up to 3 weeks, but post to the US seems fairly consistent.

So I have kind of a weird setup. Basically none of my laptops/tablets are able to handle Osu efficiently, & I can't play near my PC. So my only choice is to connect my PC from 10 meters away to the big screen TV using hdmi & usb extension cables. I run the game at 720p to prevent screen tearing, & the speaker is in the same room so the sound is fine.

But then the input lag from the tatacon is quite noticeable during high bpm songs, due to the long distant usb cord. I can still hit the notes if I focus on the beats, but the Don/Kat sounds are really distracting because they play a bit late after the hit.

Do you guys have any ideas how to reduce the latency? I did some googling & some people suggest using a USB hub, but I'm not sure if that's gonna make a different :o
Topic Starter
montymintypie
Due to the nature of USB, it either works or it doesn't - there is no extra latency from a long USB cable (technically 30 nanoseconds, but that's about 100,000 times shorter than you can notice).

Is the audio coming through HDMI too? Some TVs can have atrocious input lag, and if it's handling the audio too it could explain it. If it's the audio, you may have to run a 3.5mm cable along with the rest :(

If that fails, try and look at the lights on the converter - see if they're also lagging. It could be the controller isn't sensitive enough and only registers a hit some time after you actually make it. I think this is unlikely as even bad controllers register hits on time, you just have to hit them really hard.

Good luck!
AsakuraVN
Nvm, after configuring the universal offset in Osu to -60, the hitsound is on point now :D

The only problem left is modding my tatacon for better sensitivity...

Adapter came in today, works great!
10/10 would recommend

No worries! Just leave a note on the payment info to let me know when to ship it out.

ok I know. Thank you

Aye I think this is a sweet Idea. I am kindo late to the Taiko segment of Osu, However my sister recently got this great interest in it and would like to play with the drum set. I was wondering what I should do about it because after a ton of research it seems that the default wii drum is bad. Do I absolutely have to Mod the drum or can I buy one that works good right away? After I figure what I will do about the drum, I would love to buy one of these converters to fix the lag problem!

Thanks!
Topic Starter
montymintypie
I would definitely say the default wii drum 100% needs modding. That being said, there are 2 other options:

Hori drum. Practically arcade spec. $270. Somewhat overkill..

$30 Chinese knockoff drum. Feels funny to play on since they use real buttons instead of capacitive sensors, but without mods it plays better than the official drum without mods.

If you mod the official drum it's the best value for money, but if you don't want to mod anything I think the knockoff wins.
Tediorej
Yeeees I see, well I will more than likely be going for the mod-route then. I see the official Taiko Drum for like $50 bucks on amazon, so I figure it will be okay. I look forward to trying everything out!

Thank you for the quick response omg.
hiandbye
What do you mean by modding the official drum? What are its shortcomings? Is there a guide anywhere on what you can do to make it better?
Edit: Actually, I just saw that GMMAwesome posted one just 2 pages ago: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.ph ... tcount=117

Also, thank you for all your hard work on making and distributing this converter!
Wise Guys
If I buy a Wii tatacon drum or wii U tatacon are they both compatible with osu? Also if I use a wii tatacon u to usb converter do I bypass owning a wii console or wii U console entirely?
Topic Starter
montymintypie
I can't remember off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure the Wii U drums also connect via the Nunchuck connector. If this is the case, it will work fine with my converter! You don't need a wii at all :)

Because the converter is small, I get away with pretending it's a "Large letter". Because of this, cost saving of sending to Korea is only 60 cents :( PM me if you're still interested :)

So... it is just a converter...

My prototypes arrived - due to differences in the USB and Nunchuck connector, they do not work. Oh well :\
karterfreak
Having remembered this is a thing, I'm highly considering picking one of these up once I have the funds to afford getting a wii drum. Possibly after the holidays depending on circumstances. Would be something great to play around with when I'm not up for really hard songs.

Email notifications froze again, sorry for the delay.

No Wii controller required! The controller plugs directly into the converter as though it were a wiimote.
Rey-Don
Nice! I sent my money through paypal, hoping that this converter will be pretty good. Thanks!
Rey-Don
The adapter came in the mail in about 3 weeks, and there isn't any noticeable delay from it. The only thing I need to do is fix my tatacon's rim, the hits are not very accurate and I have to hit pretty hard for it to register. Overall I'd give the adapter a 10/10. My drum however gets a 3/10.
SugoiReborn
Wow, that seems great!
I'll be ordering one since I was given a knock off Taiko remote, but I actually want to try and replicate your work as a side project.
Thing is, I know next to nothing about Arduino and the likes.
How do I go about making my own Tatacon to USB converter?
I'm prepared to learn whatever it takes.
Pendual
is this tatacon only? would this work on the wii fight stick?
karterfreak
Safe assumption that this doesn't work for the wii fight stick. May want to look into a different converter for that.

I just hoped on the taiko train, this seems really nice ~ Any updates on the refill ?

And since nobody ever asked ima ask here : can it work without installing Chrome - and ever better, can it be customised without using the Chrome app ? My toaster laptop's burning at 60°C without anything launched, so I'm not too keen on installing new softwares on top of that.

SugoiReborn wrote:

Arduino Leonardo (for keyboard emulation), nunchuck adapter for arduino ($1 off ebay) and communicate via I2C to the nunchuck. You can even use my code, just as long as you hook it up to the right pins.

Refill coming ~soon~, waiting for my PCB fab to ship. You do need the Chrome app to configure things, but can uninstall it once you do, since it remembers the settings.

Oh, and sorry to crush the colourful people, but the next batch will be black only (unless you 3D print your own case). I've had ongoing issues with getting parcels out on time, and I don't like being that guy. Making them all black lets me pre-print everything for massive gains in shipment speed.

USB adapter came in today. Works great! I have a question more so about osu. Is there any way to lower the sensitivity of drum hits? Because I feel like I have to hit really hard on the drum for it to register hits.
Topic Starter

If it's an official drum, use this mod. If it's a chinese clone, you just have to hit harder :\

2 months late, I'm afraid. Knockoff is all the same (as far as I can tell) - design is simple and playable, you just have to hit don a little hard. And noisy. But it works well!

Sincere apologies, I've been overly busy in the leadup to Xmas - I should have posted an update sooner.

I've got all the parts, just need to print cases + solder things together. I've been having some Z-axis issues where the USB connector doesn't fit through the final print, so I've expanded tolerances and will reprint soon. I expect to have stock shortly after Christmas, maybe only a few days after boxing day.

montymintypie wrote:

Still waiting for the parcel, but while I wait, I got hard numbers on latency.

Using my scope, I had 1 probe connected to a piezo mic, and another to the LED of the converter. This LED updates at 1KHz, the same rate as the USB update rate.

I then smacked the drum 50 times, and recorded the delay between the moment the piezo started to respond, and when the converter registered a hit. An example measurement:

After 50 hits, here are the results:
Average: 1.802ms
Median: 1.77ms
Std Deviation: 0.44454517
Min: 1.1ms
Max: 2.78ms

Rounding the max value up, I can confidently say that there is an absolute worst case 3ms lag. And average lag of 1.8ms. This is imperceptible. Lagfree = confirmed!
Well, I hope that this actually works :) Anyway, where can I buy dis thing :D

if you're happy with the default keyboard bindings, you don't even need the config app at all! Plug and play :)

Phew.. 7 months since anyone said anything- luckily I do have a specific reason!

Does anyone know if MontyMintypie still sell these or is it completely inactive? I tried contacting the sellers email(just to ask a few questions) and PM on this community but no response, so I figure I try asking here on the forum where maybe anyone might know? xD (Worth a short!)

Hey montymintypie! Are you still selling the USB adapters? I wrote you a few weeks ago to sales@mon.im and got no resply. I would like to purchase 2 of your awesome adapters if possible...
raiyoku
Hi,
I wanted to buy a Tatacon to USB converter but Paypal told me you don't have any left. So I wanted to ask if you had any left somewhere or if you would produce more of them sometimes.
Animaitor
Nice, it looks like I'm not alone. Hopefully montymintypie comes back the the forum.
ScorpionGaming
Yo, it may be a stupid question, but can the Drum be directly connected to the adapter, or do I need a Wiimote too?
Topic Starter
montymintypie
Directly connected, no wiimote required.

I'm going to produce more in the coming months, if you still want one after such a long delay...
ScorpionGaming
Hmm gonna buy this when it comes back to stock.

Also, Will I be able to somehow bind the keys with the TaTaConfig extension to get it to work on a PS4?
Topic Starter
montymintypie
I think you might need an adapter to convert keyboard -> PS4. PS4 needs a specific controller layout if I recall correctly, that I don't supply.
ScorpionGaming
Ok, got it. Thanks for the extremely fast replies!

EDIT : Hey sorry for asking so much, but can You map the TaTaConfig settings to mouse keys? If Yes i would not need a Keyboard to PS4 adapter.

Simply wait - I have a new design I need to verify and Switch support I need to code for (the main blocker). I promised this over a year ago but I just haven't been able to dedicate the time after work to make it happen :|

Great! What's the reason behind the design revision if you don't mind asking? I'm just interested on the Wii (Wii-U) adapters as those tatacon are the ones I own. Please update us once you get more in stock.

The connectors are difficult to get a hold of and fairly expensive, so I'm redesigning with PCB based connectors and a second connector since I have room.

Last I checked with him he's really behind and works been taking up a lot of his time. He's still getting him out but the orders have gotten to a point where he needs more people to get them out but doesn't have the funds.
