Pocahontas died 400 years ago, on the 21st March 1617 on a ship heading towards America, not long after setting sail.
When the white colonists landed on the american east coast in 1607, Pocahontas was 12 years old. The white man John Smith who got caught by the American Indian wrote in his books that Pocahontas saved his life and described it in a romantic way. This is most likely nonsense though as in his books he gets saved by beautiful women a lot thanks to being such a brave and handsome guy. So literally fakenews.
John Smith had his life spared by the chief and they made a treaty on how to handle situation with the colonists and stuff to ensure stuff would end up peacefully. John Smith however left America and headed back to England. The colonists used this to declare him as dead and as such the treaty with the tribe null and void. As the colonists were dependant on the help of the natives until that point they got more and more desperate, eventually leading to the kidnapping of Pocahontas in 1613 in order to put the chief under pressure. Over one year of being held captive she converted to christianity and married a rich tobacco guy one year later and gave birth to a son.
In 1616 she travelled to London with her family where she was presented as a civilised savage. Colonists hoped to get more funds for their objectives that way. There she found out that John Smith was still alive, making her realise what the english were really planning to do with her homeland.
There are theories that she was poisoned with food on the ship as the colonists did not want her to reach her tribe ever again.
Pocahontas was not her real name, it was a nickname meaning "the playful". Pocahontas father was a mighty chief being said to have had a dozen women and hundred children but she was his preferred daughter, not only due to her beauty but also due to her sharpness and intelligence.
In the Disneymovie John and Pocahontas kiss each other in the corn field. The reality is that the american economy was fully built on tobacco for the first 100 years or so. There was no corn at that point of time.
Nowadays Pocahontas's village is below sea level.
