Hey all! Just have to say: excellent game! Running on Arch Linux x86_64 with wine-silverlight, and used "winetricks dotnet35 gdiplus" (in a 32-bit winebottle, of couse) and everything seems to be OK

One small problem though: I have a ThinkPad X201 Tablet and my stylus' lag is incredible. I've never noticed it before because I've never been moving it this fast
Does anyone have an idea how to increase polling rates on serial Wacom tablets? I'm having a hard time finding information around the internet on how to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I figured out what I needed to do. Since the Wacom on my laptop is serial, I recompiled my kernel with a 1000 Hz tickrate, increased the baudrate on it from 19200 to 38400, enabled low_latency on it's serial port and dropped the raw sample rate to 1 and disabled suppression.
Needless to say there is no lag on the stylus anymore

On kubuntu/ubuntu and other debian like systems osu works, but problem is with debian. Idk why, beacause packets are the same...

One small thing, some unicode characters from different languages (Japanese, Vietnamese, etc.) does not display properly. For example, Japanese characters turned into weird squares, and most of Vietnamese characters is not displayed (some works though). Anyway to fix?

EDIT: Reinstall Wine fixed the Vietnamese problem (ttf-mscorefonts-installer missing files), but Japanese characters still appear as weird blank boxes, screenshots below:



Any solution?

Mine were too until I removed my .wine32 today since it was being dumb and wouldn't run osu! for whatever reason. While rebuilding the wineprefix, I ran

EDIT: I just realised that I "borrowed" some fonts from a Windows 7 machine and put them in ~/.local/share/fonts. That might have done it too.

Literally the whole C:\Windows\Fonts. Probably unnecessary to take all of them (1,240 fonts!), but I guess it did the trick

I'll also note that they weren't working until I nuked ~/.wine32. Just remember to move osu! somewhere safe (I have mine placed in ~/Games/osu!) before you accidentally delete it!

Ironically, now only JAPANESE displays as weird blank box. Both Korean and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) worked fine. Tried to install fakejapanese :

argh! The latest update requiring dotnet 4.5.2 broke wine! Installing dotnet20 on a 32 bit prefix then dotnet 45 gives me an error saying dotnet20 is already installed!

You really can't since 1: microsoft owns that code 2: it is compiled and takes work to decompile.

What osu relies on besides net framework is windows libraries. It's the software interface the OS provides to programs for different features (like getting system time or accessing a usb device). Linux and other *nix/UNIX oses try to be POSIX compliant which means all (or most) programs work on all similar OSes. That's why you can run x program on all linux distros. Windows doesn' try to be POSIX compliant. It can be, but you are porting linux libraries to windows and stacking things on top instead of actually fixing the problem.

Yeah that's exactly why osu! is working on OSX natively right now, because it's not possible.

OS X and Linux osu will be using monogame and run under mono framework and OpenGl.

No osx version is portable WINE at the moment people are also complaining about bad performances and latencies.
Mono is mainly developed for Linux but also for Mac.

I fixed it by making a fresh WinePrefix, installing dotnet45 with:

Afterwards installing osu (as usual) with:

$ WINEPREFIX="PATH/TO/PREFIX" wine osu!install.exe

but with this it still had unplayable performance.
To fix that i simply changed the update stream to experimental/cutting-edge and restarted osu!.

Now it's playable again

(I have a Ubuntu 14.04 64-Bit System and wine 1.7.44)

Edit: One drawback i just noticed, is that you need a supporter tag to play multiplayer in the experiemental update stream!

It has to be C:\Windows\Fonts from a Windows computer, not the wineprefix. I'll have to dig around and see what fonts are really needed. You also need to refresh your font cache after you add fonts to ~/.local/share/fonts otherwise they won't show up at all. Logging out and logging back in should do the trick if you're using a DE.

While that is true, based peppy has been moving stuff over to MonoGame AFAIK, which will make it cross-platform.

So I tried copying some Sazanami and Kochi (Gothic and Mincho) but no works. Also I've been logging on and off, restarting the machine, even nuking the wineprefix to do everything from scratch. No works at all.

I finally managed to run osu!

I'm a complete noob and I could not install it because:

1) When I installed .net 2.0, and then tried to run osu installer, it said: "Hi! Could not install .NET. Click here to manually install and download."
2) I though that maybe I had to upgrade .NET to 4.5, but I had to install dotnet30 first, and it gave me a setup error every time.
3) I tried PlayOnLInux approach but of course it also gave me an error...

So I finally tried to run osu that I used on windows and which I copied to linux. I followed what this good person said in the first few minutes of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RwEBXVx7UU and I finally managed to run osu!

So if you're as mentally challenged as I am and get errors every time you do something, then download osu! on windows (maybe ask a friend if you don't have windows yourself), copy the whole folder to linux, follow the steps from the aforementioned video and enjoy osu!.

I have to run osu from the terminal, but it's not a such a big deal and probably there is a better way to do this which I don't know (I made a script and it seems to work.

Hopefully everyone else can use the installer and don't have to use such primitive methods, and hopefully it's ok to run osu like that.

Ok, I'll tell you everything I had to do in order to play osu!. I use Ubuntu 14.04 btw, but it should work on most linux versions. Anyway, that's what you have to do in order to play osu! using this method:

1) Install osu! on windows and copy the entire folder to your linux folder. It doesn't have to be a wine folder. In fact, I'd say that it is better if it is not there. I have my osu! folder on a different partition and it works great. Wherever you put it, remember the path to your osu! folder.

2) Download and install wine. It should work on most wine versions, I use 1.6.2 and it works.

3) Navigate to your home folder and press ctrl+H. It'll show hidden folders. Look for a folder named .wine (notice the dot). If this folder was made as a 32-bit folder, then I guess you can skip this step and step 4 (not sure though). If it's 64-bit or you don't know whether it's 32 or 64, then rename the old .wine folder to something else, like .wine2. If you don't have the .wine folder, then you can move on to step 4.

4) Open the terminal (ctrl+alt+T on ubuntu) and copy & paste the following command:

WINEARCH=win32 winecfg

It'll make a new .wine folder with a 32-bit prefix. You need a 32-bit version to install .NET in the next step.

5) When wine finishes making the new .wine folder, go to terminal again and put in this command:

winetricks dotnet20

This will download and install .NET required to run the game. Follow the instructions and install it.


Congratulations! Now you can play osu!. Go to your osu! folder and double click the exe file, or right-click -> open with -> wine.

I guess you could create a shortcut on your desktop, but I have no idea how to do it. Just keep in mind that I'm a linux noob myself, so there's probably a better way to do all this.

Unfortunately it seems to be running very poorly. I tried switching to OpenGL and it refused to let me do so, and I couldn't switch to Cuttingedge either. I tried changing both of those settings in the config file but that didn't work. Also, the player controls are missing.

Oh well, if I can't figure it out I suppose I could just dual-boot.

Try doing this:

Open the Graphics tab, turn on both the "Capture mouse...blah blah blah sth" and "Use Native DirectX 9 ... blah blah blah" or something like that (remember to turn on both). It is much less laggy and actually pretty nice to play without any delay of input.

Got the latest Cutting Edge set up and working with dotnet45. 2000+ FPS consistently (which is way better than what it was on Linux), universal offset is -30 (compared to 0 on Windows) and there's a slight keyboard input delay: I have to hit the keyboard keys earlier (however I don't notice any mouse / tablet input delay).

I tested osu! cutting edge (and beta) on linux mint with the latest wine and winetricks (winetricks corefonts dotnet45) and encountered this strange issue:


Note how the game objects (sliders, approachcircles, etc) are really laggy, but everything else (score/combo animation, the combo stars flying around, all the menus, the cursor when auto is off) is perfectly smooth. (the frametimes are okay too!)

Keep in mind that this was done in a VM (so ignore the major audio desync and poor overall performance), but a friend of mine confirmed this on his desktop PC as well.

On my friend's PC it solved itself, though, without doing anything.

For anyone having connection issues on cuttingedge using wine.

1. First of all, install -> wine-staging <- which fixes the missing SSL stuff required by osu.
2. Create a fresh wine prefix, set up your name and whatnot and close winecfg (make sure ~/.wine doesn't exist or change it)

   WINEPREFIX=~/.wine WINEARCH=win32 winecfg

3. Install winetricks through your package manager if you don't already have it (e.g. sudo apt-get install winetricks)
4. Install dotnet45

   WINEPREFIX=~/.wine WINEARCH=win32 winetricks -q dotnet45 corefonts

5. Download the osu!installer https://osu.ppy.sh/p/download

6. WINEPREFIX=~/.wine WINEARCH=win32 wine osu!install.exe

7. Switch to cutting-edge as soon as osu starts and restart when required
8. Close osu!.
9. You can now start osu through

   WINEPREFIX=~/.wine WINEARCH=win32 wine '~/.wine/drive_c/users/<your username>/Local Settings/Application Data/osu!/osu!.exe'

   and it should connect to bancho just fine

To minimize input and sound latency, I recommend this great guide t/256526 .

By the way, if someone is experiencing low fps problems, I fixed that by updating to the experimental branch from an older executable because apparently the stable branch also brokes the updating system (for me).

it shows directx on osu! but if you're looking into the debugger, it's using opengl.. really.. thats why it was not that laggy

If you want a simple way of doing this, there is a way of making custom installs using PlayOnLinux that lets you set up wine drives without doing the dirty work.

This worked first try for me(Ubuntu 15.10)

• 
  1. Open Configure from the main PlayOnLinux window
  2. Click the New button at the bottom left of the window
  3. Click next on the wizard that pops up, and select a 32 bits installation. I have not tried 64 bits, but it might as well work.
  4. Select wine version. I used 1.7.52, because Leauge of Legends(also wine'd) was using it, so it was convenient. You can mix and match here, but for this small guides sake, let's pretend you need to use 1.7.52. If you do not have this version installed, see below.
  5. Name the drive whatever you want. Wait for the new drive to be created
  6. Select the newly created drive in the left side of the configuration window, and navigate to the Install components tab. Find dotnet45 on the list, and install it. In some distributions, you need to apply this fix before doing so: https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-10534-Regarding_ptrace_scope_fatal_error.html
  7. Download the osu installer as you would on windows
  8. Back in the configuration window, navigate to the Miscellaneous tab, and click Run a .exe file in this virtual drive. Select the osu installer, and run it. There might be some errors, but for me it turned out to work anyways.
  9. (Optionally) Navigate back to the General tab, and click Make a new shortcut from this virtual drive. Select osu!.exe from the list, or browse to the binary yourself.

What if i don't have wine 1.7.52 installed?

  1. In the main PlayOnLinux window, select Manage wine versions from the Tools menu item at the top of the window
  2. Make sure the x86 tab is selected
  3. Select the required wine version from the list on the left, and use the > arrow to add it to the list of installed versions.

As a side note, when it comes to audio delay, my experience is that i managed to bring it down to 14ms buffer latency by tweaking pulseaudio's config files. I simply ajusted osu's global offset, and after that, it was pretty playable.

Also, here is a screenshot of it working as a tile in the i3 window manager. osu! insists on still rendering for the entire screen, but it cuts in a way that doesn't put an offset on the mouse input vs graphics, so it's fine for me. http://puu.sh/m5rff/a075dcbb55.png

That installs wine, downloads winetricks (Fedora doesn't come with it in default repos; this won't hurt anything on distros that include/have it), makes it executable, creates the temp folder for dotnet40 files, grabs some file that dotnet40 installer will tell you to download manually from MediaFire (uploaded to my GitLab), grabs osu! installer (no cert check because wget was unable to verify the cert at the time), installs dotnet40, and then installs osu!, all within an isolated 32-bit prefix. The final line removes winetricks and the osu! installer, and writes all changes to the filesystem.

If that process looks good; I'd recommend copy/pasting it into a text editor, editing the username, and making it one giant command line (use && in-between commands; see AIO on my GitLab doc).

The following is how to create a launcher for osu! for use with most desktop environments (I use GNOME):

- Don't blindly copy/paste what's above; the file/folder structure should be pretty standard across most Linux distros, but you'll most definitely need to change the username

- dotnet40 seems to be good enough (it only installs dotnet40; whereas dotnet45 wants to install some other dotnet stuff); I'm unware if any issues from only having dotnet40 will arise, but starting the game and playing some of the stock beatmaps works fine

- Not sure why or if corefonts is needed; initial testing looks to be fine without it (might be needed for Asian characters judging by previous feedback; I'll wait until/f it becomes a problem)

- The above does nothing special in-regards to gallium-nine, CSMT, optimizations, or etc; osu! looks to work fine without any of that on my setup :p

This is due to pulseaudio. Adjusting buffer sizes should work. There are plenty of different ways of doing it, and i don't know how good my way is, so i won't write a tutorial on it. You will find stuff on pulse in this thread, though

Hi!

I installed osu! on my Linux laptop, but whenever I click Solo, or a new map, or when I fail or pass, it shows a pure white screen that only changes when I move the mouse (only for Solo), or whenever I click again or press escape. Any solution?

EDIT: Disabled shader, and it works now. Sorry for taking up thread space, but if anyone else has this problem this is the solution.

Here is a script I put together that installs osu! on Ubuntu (easy to adapt elsewhere), creates the launcher shortcut, and does this in possibly the cleanest manner possible with very little user input (only need to enter sudoer password for PPA add and packages). The script has comments to let you know what something does, and is verbose while being ran.

Could someone try installing osu! with only dotnet40 and cjkfonts (in a 32-bit prefix and no manual dll overrides)? It would appear that gdiplus (and its huge 500+MB download size) isn't a requirement for cjkfonts. A quick way to test if CJK fonts work is to go to the select language drop-down in Options (if you see CJK characters, it works; if boxes, then it doesn't work).

My script currently does this for anyone who also wants to try it out that way.

For example, when looking at https://osu.ppy.sh/s/198034 the source field (which contains the characters 東方) show up as blocks if and only if I prefer English metadata. When I enable "Prefer metadata in original language" the source filed is perfectly readable.

Even better, if I edit the beatmap title or source to include a hiragana character, the 東方 starts showing up correctly. So I suspect it's something about wine's default font selection algorithm that is not recognizing that certain characters aren't available in certain fonts.

For Debian (stretch/sid, x64), I had to install allfonts with winetricks before successfully installing osu!; until that, the installer was unable to find Sans Serif font:

I'm getting this too. Either the logo isn't transparent (or wine doesn't support the logo format's transparency), or wine doesn't apply the logo transparency.

Guild Wars 2's launcher uses transparency as well (all the area around the main rectangle) and looks to be fine, but to be fair, I'm sure both are using totally different methods. I'm wondering how osu! is handling the transparency and if it could be improved somehow.



On another note, I updated my script for installing osu!; it now sandboxes the prefix and locks the cursor to the window when fullscreen. Pretty sure I didn't miss anything, but if anyone could test it out, that'd be great

It only works as-is on Ubuntu (other distros may need to modify the top part of the script and to make sure wine and aria2c are installed; if other distros just ignore commands it can't run and continue executing later commands, then the script may not require any editing).

Can run the script with the following command (it's all one line):

For anyone who didn't see the first post I made about it; the script above should install Wine (and aria2c), handle the creation of a Wine Prefix for osu!, dependencies (dotnet40, cjkfonts), create a desktop launcher, and install osu! with very little input needed and as lightweight as possible. Works out-the-box on Ubuntu, and can work on other distros with very minor editing.

Alternatively,I have my install doc here for osu! I use on my machines.

Thought I would share my experience about how I got osu going on my particular rig. Might help some of you.

Please note that you may be prompted to change a value in a file called ptrace_scope.
Even if not prompted I recommend you change the value in the file from 1 to 0 as playonlinux complains if it is set to 1 (note that this change is temporary so if you need to restart your computer at any point during the install remember to reset this)

To edit this file just type:

sudo gedit /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope

(If not running GNOME then substitute gedit with your prefered text editor)

So I used playonlinux, a special automator for setting up windows games. There IS an osu script on there but I found it didn't work.

So anyway I opened playonlinux and added a game. Now in the add a game menu there should be an option for manually adding a game not listed, select that.

Name the drive whatever you want but MAKE SURE IT IS SETUP AS 32 BIT. THIS IS IMPORTANT

A menu should pop up, select the checkbox for: Use different wine version and Install some libraries

For the wine version select version 1.9.1.

For libraries to install you need to select

Dotnet4.0

Only select to install .NET 4.0, DO NOT SELECT 4.5 AS THIS MIGHT BREAK THINGS (We will come back and deal with the rest later)

When given the option to select a program to install do so. Browse to the osu installer (The new installer not the old installer) and select it. Click next and the program should install.

Now playonlinux most likely WILL complain and say something has gone wrong. Ignore this and wait until the install is finished.
Once finished osu SHOULD start. Once it starts, exit it and then select CANCEL in the playonlinux window (which should still be displaying some sort of error about the install failing)

Now click the configure button and you should see your virtual drive in there, select it.

Hop over to the install components tab and install these libraries in this order:
Dotnet30
Dotnet30sp1
Dotnet35
Dotnet35sp1
Dotnet40
Dotnet45
gdiplus

Now the installer will be a bit weird as each time you install a version of .NET it will "install" previous versions. I don't know if it is actually installing them or if it is just checking to see if they are there but it doesn't cause any problems.

Once you have finished installing those libraries go back to the general tab and select "Make a new shortcut from this virtual drive" then select osu.exe in the window that pops up.

That's it! You should be all set and ready to go! Note that while these steps worked for me they might not work for you but if they do please let me know. Enjoy!

Why do you install all those dotnet packages? I've checked a few times in the past, and as of maybe a month ago, only dotnet40 was needed to get osu! up and running (the dotnet40 package only installs that one package and nothing before it).

As for ptrace_scope, you ideally don't want that to remain at 0 after closing osu! for security purposes (it basically lets apps talk to each other; you don't want some malicious script to run from Firefox and then just casually log other apps). That may only apply to PlayOnLinux though, as I don't recall having to do that for years with regular Wine.

Running gedit with sudo is also a slight no-no. It can cause some weird permission issues when you try to go back to using gedit as the normal user. pkexec is a better option, but I'm not entirely certain if it works out-the-box with gedit or not (I know it didn't back on Ubuntu 15.10, but not sure about Ubuntu GNOME).

Ptrade_scope is changed back to 1 after the computer is rebooted. It is only required to install .NET. To actually start and play osu ptrace_scope does NOT need to be set to 0. The program runs just fine with it set at 1

Only reason I installed all those frameworks was because the info I kept seeing around which frameworks were required was patchy. In the end I just thought it better to install all those frameworks to just be sure. Plus when I selected .NET 4.0 to install playonlinux insisted on installing the previous .NET's along with it. I dunno why but it just did.

As for gedit, I've run into no issues with permissions while using that coupled with the sudo command. In fact I've never even heard of that happening before.

I was only posting what I found worked for me when it came to getting the game up and running under linux. It isn't an end all solution and any suggestions on things to change would be appreciated

I installed osu! by following a guide on winehq.org (I installed dotnet40 instead of dotnet45 btw)
Everything went well and the game worked, until I closed the game and tried to run osu!.exe from the prefix directory. Now it won't start the game.

I'm using Xubuntu 14.04.04 LTS and Wine-Staging 1.9.11
I can run Touhou without any problems, so I don't know why Wine won't run osu!

Edit: Nevermind, I got it working by running it with Terminal. I'm such a noob

Just something to note FWIW I have seen this on standard Windows XP as well so it's not just a wine issue but probably with the runtime used. While I've never run osu! in wine and I don't know your configuration, I take it to get osu! to run you are using wine as Windows XP mode with the XP version of .net which is the default (at least it was last I used wine which has been well over a year now lol), which is probably the limitation. While it's probably not recommended and even more likely to not work whatsoever, has anyone tried running Wine in Windows 7 mode to see if it fixes this?

I actually recreated the prefix multiple times and with multiple installs of WINE but to no avail. I've installed Linux Mint now though and it works fine.

It's because there is an exclamation mark in osu!. You need to put the word in double quotation marks (e.g. drive_c/Program Files/"osu!") ^^

Interesting how there is still no effort to produce a native solution for Linux. At this point, we may as well create a Snap or Flatpak-wrapped wine-wrapped copy of the game so that no one has to be bothered with ensuring that they have the right system libraries and associated wine configurations.

It seems like the development team doesn't care about the Linux users, because osu! is available on everything but Linux, which just sounds a bit odd. Everytime someone suggested a native port for Linux, Peppy just told them "to use a real operating system".

The main problem i see here (maybe i'm wrong) is .NET, since the game depends on libraries of .NET and .NET is a framework of Microsoft so they make sure you are caught on the platform once you start write code for it, you can't change it to cross platform easily.

There is some effort in porting .NET to cross-platform called Mono, but it is somewhat behind and probably will never port some important libraries like Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).
Also some of the devs were bought (xamarin) to develop .NET Core, a Open Source .NET rebuild from Microsoft with fewer element tailored to the needs of the cloud.

All in all it's pretty complicated with all the framework stuff and corporate interests.
If you want cross platform, you better stay away from closed source proprietary frameworks owned by a company thats very interested in keeping you locked in the ecosystem.

However i really wonder why there is a MacOs X port of the game, if it isn't heavily wrapped in wine, the assumption above may be wrong and peppy just don't want to support linux for whatever reason.

Well WINE works nicely. The game works very well if you use the playonlinux script:)

But unless peppy decides "Hey, I want to support a bit more of the community, I'll develop with cross-platform in mind and write the engine with OpenGL and Vulkan" it's probably not going to happen. os

For those who are having trouble getting osu! to run with the looping 'Information Class 16 not implemented" or such, there are two things I would try: Try installing winbind `apt-get install winbind`, first, and then if that doesn't work, `wineserver -k`, `wineserver -k9`, or `killall wineserver` *might* help.

Thank you, people, though, for making this guide. My tips are from playing osu, thn osu not working without changing anything, and then doing those things... though in opposite order. So, I hope this helps someone.

I've only tested it on Solus, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work fine on any other mainstream distro. This provides a plain install of osu! with no additional tweaking (in my experience, I've had no latency issues on the computers I've used). CJK fonts are untested (if they're broken, winetricks cjkfonts should fix that)

dotnet40 is still the only dotnet package needed (I'm still a bit curious why dotnet45 is being used by some people; does it actually solve anything?)

Not entirely sure if it's harmful, but I'm pretty sure it has the potential for more problems if anything. I'm not aware of anything that dotnet45 and its massive dependency set would solve that isn't provided solely with dotnet40.

Notes updated also; I keep forgetting osu! doesn't start the install on Ubuntu if it happens to be in the Downloads folder (seems to work regardless on other distros strangely). corefonts is also added (it fixes most non-Latin fonts).

What GPU do you have and what drivers are you using?

If it's Intel, NVIDIA with nouveau, or AMD with open-source graphics drivers (radeon or AMDGPU), try running osu! with the environment variable vblank_mode=0

If it's NVIDIA with the proprietary driver or AMD with GPU-PRO, try figuring out some way to disable vblank/vsync (NVIDIA has an environment variable, no idea on GPU-PRO but it might share the same variable as the open-source drivers above).

Alternatively, try another distro and/or desktop enviroment (like Xubuntu or Ubuntu MATE).

I honestly gave up after a while of trying to run osu! on any version of Ubuntu I have on any device, it was always slow and jittery. Plus it took way too much work to get it to even function at subpar 50 fps. That's when I gave up and went back to playing on Windows 10 with everything smooth. I do recommend though if you are going to be running osu! on Linux that you try using OpenGL and changing the capped framerates off of VSync (if it even is in the first place) as I find that VSync is broken in a lot of games on Linux.

The amount of work is pretty minimal nowadays (with the guide in my sig, you can copy/paste the lines and end up with a working set-up). osu! nowadays only has an OpenGL renderer.

I had the same problems as you, and the problem was wine 1.7, it's not the last version, try installing wine staging, run winecfg and in the tab "staging" check "Enable_CSMT for better graphic performance" it will allow wine to multithread. it actually gave me a 300 fps boost, hope you will have the same :b

Can you confirm this happening still? osu! nowadays should only use OpenGL (not sure if there's a fallback to D3D) and CSMT (as-documented) only affects Direct3D.

Not really related to osu!, but I just realized that the version of Wine in the Ubuntu repositories is really old (1.6.2) and I want to install latest version of Wine Staging using the official Wine PPA for Ubuntu. Will the prefixes disappear, if I uninstall Wine?
Also, osu! is apparently installed in a folder in my downloads folder. Will that go away too?

Not really related to osu!, but I just realized that the version of Wine in the Ubuntu repositories is really old (1.6.2) and I want to install latest version of Wine Staging using the official Wine PPA for Ubuntu. Will the prefixes disappear, if I uninstall Wine?
Also, osu! is apparently installed in a folder in my downloads folder. Will that go away too?

Nope, the prefix will be preserved if you remove and/or update Wine. If you change Wine versions, then upon osu!'s next start, you'll get a quick message about the prefix updating and then it should start.

Can you confirm this happening still? osu! nowadays should only use OpenGL (not sure if there's a fallback to D3D) and CSMT (as-documented) only affects Direct3D.

Sorry, i didn't see your post because i don't check osu often. and yes, CSMT still works with osu!.
