Why does osu! have the most cringeworthy community to date?

Serious question. This game is has cringiest community out of any community to exist to this day. If you don't agree, log in right now and take a minute to observe the #osu! chat.

How did this happen?

It's a bit of an exagguration to say that osu! has the cringeworthiest community to date, but that's just my opinion. Take a look at some YouTuber's communities and some maybe CoD.

Good question, though. I myself can't come up with an answer that can be considered worth reading as of now, so I won't try to tackle the entire question. I do have a few things to say about #osu though:

I think everyone can agree that #osu is a complete and utter shitstorm, this is probably partially due to the lack of moderation at certain parts of the day, and the types of people who generally use #osu. As for my daily experiences in #osu, they usually consist of questioning why people are so attached to my username and why people won't stop spamming the most uninteresting of memes. That in itself is a pretty unexplained answer, I'd be surprised if anyone can actually come up with an in-depth answer to the entire question, and not just why #osu is so cringeworthy.

From an autistic person's point of view, I'd say osu! is closer to what you call "autism". I see what you're trying to say though. Feel free to disagree with me.

young average age + many people using this game as a means of escapism. Tendentiously, both groups have lower social skills than the average person (escapists and children).

I also noticed that anime-centered communities had higher levels of toxicity than the average online-community. I'm not quite sure as to why that is. Maybe it is because watching anime is a hobby that is less likely to be shared with the peer-group, compared to other more "normal" hobbies (like playing battlefield or playing tennis or whatever). Being into anime correlates with people being isolated IRL, which correlates with people being socially weak in one way or another.

I have no idea why this community is so young though. But maybe someone else can answer that question.

You do bring up a good point there.
Maybe it's how people find osu! that lead the osu! community to have a young average age. For example, say there's an osu! thread on a Minecraft server forum. Those are usually comprised of children to people in their late teens. Actually, I originally found osu! from a Minecraft server forum that was indeed riddled with people around the 10 - 16 age group.

There's probably a bigger reason as to why osu! has a young playerbase, but I'm not smart enough to be able to think of such a reason.

I didn't know about that gateway! I wonder if that'd be enough to explain the young average age, even after the game has been going for quite a long time...
I wish I had statistics on how old the anime-community is (main-gateway), but to me it feels a lot older. I have no idea how it looks like for other rhythm-games. Maybe minecraft is the explanation for osu's young age (the minecraft-com is the pretty much the youngest amongst all mainstream games after all), but I feel like theres still something else missing.

I thought of another reason as to why this community is so bad: Theres a lack of moderation, and the moderation that takes place is quite lenient. (EDIT: whoops, you mentioned that already :D )

That's like saying judging the league of legends community based on all the players in plat and below is a huge generalization and that not all ranked games are composed of autistic 12 year olds who don't know how to communicate with their team except for being able to call mid during champion select.

I see what you're saying, but basing my opinion of the community on the minority of respectable users is unreasonable. It's like basing an opinion of the counter strike community on the respectable professional players alone. Every community has their hidden gems, but generalizing a community based on a minority is ridiculous.

osu! is primarily a single player game. What's a better way to judge the community than by the global chat room? The majority of users do not even browse forums anyway.

But the majority of users don't actually use #osu because it is cancer. All the somewhat respectable people stay away from it because of how bad it is.

You're still judging the game community based on a vocal minority.

How else am I supposed to judge the community? Should I try to have a conversation with every user on the user list and then go from there? I may be judging the community based on a vocal minority, but there is nothing else for me to base my opinion on. If pm chat logs were made public I bet we would see a lot of what occurs on #osu! (rping, ranting about being bad, bragging about ranks), and thank goodness they keep that to themselves.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but the whole "couples" and "group" avatar thing that has been going on also makes me cringe. I press F9 in-game and receive an overdose of weeabooism for the day. I'm also overwhelmed by the cutesy stream overlays people have on their osu! livestreams. Is this just a phase in the lives of these individuals or what?

If someone asks you to briefly describe the osu! community, what would you say? I'd say it's mainly composed of a bunch of 12 year old tryhard roleplaying weeaboos with anime avatars and guys pretending to be girls who obsess over PP, DT and AR10 while ranting about not being as good as cookiezi. I don't know about you, but that's pretty much my opinion of the osu! community at this point. This doesn't really include the mapping, taiko, o!m and ctb communities, just the osu! standard community.

Look at any big community, and I guarantee that you'll find plenty of unlikeable people on the surface.
Honestly, I've been active for long enough to know that the type of people you're seeing is a result of the type of game osu! is (aka the type of casual people it attracts), and the sheer size of the community (it wasn't this bad when it was less popular). What you see isn't at all representative of the community as a whole, but you just gotta accept that the ugly face doesn't represent the entire picture. The game has more community aspects than just the global chat, you know.

I think what you see represents the community if you don't count all the people who do nothing and don't talk at all as the community.

Pretty much what I've been trying to say the whole time, but people can't seem to understand this. You shouldn't have to make an effort to find out what a community is like, it should be evident.

First you need to understand, osu! is way too big for a single community, you'll find smaller communities all over the place, for example the forums alone (the part im most familiar with) has several communities with their own mindsets and such. As example, the offtopic community is vastly different from the one over at G&R, same can be said for FG and the modders. Each has their own group and for the most part keep to themselfes.

You're judging all these groups based on what you see on the #osu community, dont you think thats unfair? I can gurantee you, almost nobody here regulary chats in #osu, so why would #osu be representative for us?

If you'd want to take a proper look in order to judge the osu! community as whole, you'd have to talk with people from the sepperate subcommunities. Ofcourse, you dont need to talk with EVERYONE, but randomly pick a few and you'll find the people and communities all rather different to each other.

Ok, for the last time (maybe), with the exception of a few decent forum users and players, the osu! standard community is pretty cringeworthy. I generally don't include the taiko, ctb, o!m, forums and mapping communities as being part of the osu! community because they just keep to themselves all the time. Since the osu! standard community makes up the majority of the osu! playerbase, I'm basing my opinion of the entire community on them. This is because they are the most active and influential community out of all the osu! sub-communities. Communities are not to be judged based on a minority of members, but by the majority.

An individual's opinion of a community is built from what that person has seen and experienced from it. It's shaped by what has been made evident to the individual. There's a reason why the league of legends community is seen as the worst by many people, it's because the cancerous parts of the community are more evident than the good. If anyone has played Vindictus NA they would know that the game has a great community, in fact, probably one of the best online mmo communities out there. This is because the good parts of the community (helpful, friendly playerbase) are more evident than the bad (elitists).

I don't see why people are taking offense to this. I mean, if you know that you aren't part of the cringe-inducing playerbase then there's no reason.

#osu! makes me cringe because of the "12 year old tryhard roleplaying weeaboos with anime avatars and guys pretending to be girls who obsess over PP, DT and AR10 while ranting about not being as good as cookiezi.". The roleplaying, communicating though emojis, and blatant attention-seeking that occurs on #osu! is just so toxic to me and many others, and as a result good conversations rarely ever occur in #osu!. If only there was a chat channel where these sort of individuals can be separated from the respectable users, that would please me a bit.

And no, shitposting on off-topic isn't helping the issue at all, but I just can't help it. This doesn't even seem to be an issue to people based on the kind of replies I've been getting.

I'd like to think that, ideally, no one wants to see idiocy when they don't want to see idiocy. (or any idiocy they don't like/agree with for that matter)

You can avoid that if you want to in-game by not paying attention, to reiterate an earlier statement.
#osu channel has traditionally been the hub for any and all users, and I'm confident you remember not so long ago when that channel was mandatory and not given the option for closure.

You've spent what, 3 years here ? I'm sure you can deal with cringing from time to time.

On a side note, why not consider adding or approaching the users who've taken the time and given replies to this thread of yours ?
