Note to mappers

Just because the song is instrumental/techno/bass heavy, doesn't mean you absolutely have to add flashing white or whatever qualifies as the "epilepsy warning" at the start of them. I'm so tired of seeing so many maps of my favourite music genre rendered annoying to play because so many of them have flashing shit on them. "Oh hey that music sounds great, let me just play the map "THIS MAP CONTAINS FLASHING ELEMENTS" "god fucking damnit"

That's my note.

Edit: I can always remove the flashes from the map folder, but this note is more geared towards when OSZ2 takes control and they are unremovable.

People use Kiai Time to brighten and style their map for some extra fun as I'm currently using in my Not Released map. Basically, most mappers use it. Storyboarding on the other hand is for the mapper to use to give their map some EBA styled fun into the game. Don't argue, it will just make it worse.
What the fuck are you talking about.

Orkel is complaining that this is being used too often without reason. Adding unnecessary elements to the map in this case reduced the map's [potential] audience. Do you really want that?

I have to agree with him. Maybe SB's with just strobes can be 'banned' unless there's a very good reason to have it?

Kiai time is fine. The thing that irks me, and that is the point of this thread, is that so many instrumental dance songs have flashing storyboards, and it will make playing my favourite genre annoying in the future. I don't have epilepsy, but flashing stuff makes me really nauseous.

Oh...

/thread and also, viewtopic.php?f=7&t=29821
That score of mine is nothing special. I removed the sb as soon as I saw the epilepsy warning. Plus that thread is about something different.

What?
This is about that he dislikes massive stobe usage that can make it more annoying to play. (And if a storyboard makes somebody puke there is a problem <.<)
It has nothing to do with EBA.

It seems like every song has some kind of stupid pulsing background thing. It's dumb, looks like shit. Your little loop SB isn't good. STOP IT!

wait, white flashes and strobing might become unremovable someday? Oh fuck...

Tribute is the only map I can think of where the strobing part actually adds to the experience. Now that I think about it, one of awp's maps is also one of the few maps where I found the white flashes to be used appropriately.

Seriously, SB little dancing people or something instead of making my eyes sore. I don't get sick from flashy crap. However, 90% of the time I'm like, "...this is used inappropriately and looks horrible."

Either do it right (see how Tribute does it for an example) or don't do it at all, please.

While I agree partially, I'm totally fine with flashing stuff (no sorry, I want them).
Some mappers are adding epilepsy warning on the beginning of the map, and that's fine.

The thing is, some people are actually having problems with epilepsy, while most of them doesn't know how to focus on certain elements on the screen. This way, making such a thread is just an "excuse" to that fact. I assure you, I'm able to play osu! even with sun raping my screen or UFO flying next to my eyes etc.

Im not too sure what side to take here. I don't like strobe effects like in this, but I like strobe effects like in this.

Then again, strobes don't bother me all that much unless they start lagging me, so I guess I don't mind them.

Bagno, one doesn't have to have epilepsy to be affected by the flashes/annoying shit. Some brains are more sensitive to the stuff or the eyes are wired differently or something (not a doctor)...it's why people without real eye problems get headaches and nausea from 3-D; some people are like you and "can focus on certain elements" while others physically can't because their eyes are being raped. This thread isn't an "excuse", it's a legitimate complaint.

I'm glad peppy added the epilepsy warning but I'm worried about the apparent lack of ability to remove the annoying shit in osz2 and the apparent need for more and more maps to flashflashflashstrobestrobepulsepulsepulse.

I've noticed that light (not-heavy) strobes on a black or dark background are much nicer and fun than strobes on a lighter background. Could be brightness/area or something.

strager's got a real good point that I want to emphasize: doing something "for the sake of doing it" is bad. I've seen a lot of maps with difficulty names where I can't really make sense of them. Sometimes, if you think about them, or someone explains it to you, you go "Oh, that's actually kind of clever", but they feel like they're just there for the sake of being there. I've done this once, but I did have intent behind it (and still do, time and patience permitting).

Back when the SBE was new I saw a bit of that, too. Storyboards for the sake of being storyboards. Basically, I think if you're going to do something, you should have the vision to match it. Don't do it just because, and if someone asks you "why", you should be able to defend your decisions. Map making is an art, the end result should be a cohesive product, and you should know where you're going before you start.

I'm fine with flashes, since I got already flashbanged couple times on Counter-Strike.
