I think it might be just FLCL's bizarre approach to telling it's coming of age story. The comedy is just look at how weird we can be and the metaphors can be pretty downright unhelpful but I appreciate the series for not falling into convention. It pains me that many people won't watch long anime, but it's understandable. However, it certainly cannot be the worst anime you've seen if you haven't exactly watched it.
