It really gets annoying when I forget to add a setting to my search and the only way I know of getting back to the search is just go back or hit search again, either option erases all my settings. Where is the Modify search criteria option that most decent search systems have?

Furthermore if I realize I mde a mistake and hit the back button too quickly. I get the Sorry, Search cannot be completed at this time message. Is it really necessary to considr accessing the search criteria page as conducting a search, when no results are displayed or returned when going to this page? It should only display this if I actually hit the Search button or do an action that actually searches.

Another gripe that i'll just tack onto this thread is that there is no way I can think of that limits a search to terms that are only in the title. I think it's inefficient if I'm concerned with the topic information only and it has to search 300 characters of each thread to return results. This could be overhauled to be much less wasteful if you added more features to limit the result findings. Such as restricting by date posted.

The phpbb search framework is bulky, under-performant and limited in scalability and functionality. I have no intentions of fixing the bugs you are seeing.

Have you tried using the google custom search field? It's likely not as accurate, but if possible I'd like to move in that direction.

I didn't think of that. But even that causes issues. If i'm searching for a duplicate topic, there are no criteria for that search, it just searches every topic on the site for the keywords. I will need to get lucky to confirm a similar thread using that, because it's going to return 2000 results a search and they don't seem to be organized in any particular way.

Some form o relevence to my searching is better than no organization or structure. If eventually these things could be handled one way or another way the better. Because I don't even think the search checks the title for key words when it searches. If I search mania in technical support, probably about half the mania related topics will appear. It's bad.

As an alternative until better option come, you can introduce a tag system? Insert keywords in a box and those will be picked up by the search.

Something seach.php is really missing is the ability to view topics created by the specified author only. Searching for the author right now when having topics selected searches for his posts anyway.

and searching text found in the title only, not words found inside the thread.

Still want a way to modify search without going back to the search form again (eg toggle between Show Topic/Post refreshes the display).

Will the search function be looked into for the site re-design, or are we sticking with the same infrastructure?
