can people be really good by playing only osu!mania? i mean there are other similar games that offer harder songs like o2jam,LR2,etc which could make better reading and playing skills
Cuppp
Yes if you play converts :^)
Pinecone
Good thing about osu!mania is that the maps are really varied. You can play o2jam, lr2, stepmania... etc converts all in one game.
So I'd say yes.

oh there are lots of convertions? even the hardest ones?

Maybe it's due to how this game hasn't been running long enough. But I don't think I know anyone that went pro with -just- osu!mania. Most the pros are from other games. From the pros that started with mania, they all started using LR2 or o2jam at some point in time as their main training platform and just come back here from time to time to pop a couple scores (or never came back at all).

I mean seriously: if going pro is your main objective, a game where such nonsense is possible ( t/224534 ) shouldn't be on the top of your list. Rather, just come here to enjoy the multiplayer and the chat from time to time.

Though if your goal is just to have fun, osu!mania's social features makes this particular game a little more "fun" for many people. Spectating, game chat, map submission and multiplayer (which are all accessible at a click of a button in-game) are all things that keeps this game well-alive despite the fundamental flaws in it's core gameplay elements.

Every game gots their ups and downs, but the way I see it (and use these 3 games) is pretty simple. I use o2jam to train my LNs and higher-difficulty reading skills. I use LR2 to train my accuracy and control (it's also recently become my main platform over o2jam due to it's dan system). And osu!mania to fool around in multiplayer since o2jam's multiplayer is pretty dead.

In reality, I'm sure it's possible to break the ET barrier -eventually- with only osu!mania. But I'm also pretty certain it's much faster to reach that level in the other games that help reinforce your skills with proper mechanics.

~

Edit: And yes multiple converts are available, though like I said without proper mechanics it doesn't mean much. The map I played in that vid is a BMS insane scale lv2. Only rare prodigies would be clearing such levels within a year on LR2. I know many with well over 2 years that still can't groove clear. Yet look at how that difficulty gets ridiculed in this game.

well but the problem with o2jam is there's not many songs there

io2pf
o2jam live
o2jam v3
o2forever

Here's the song packs for some of the more popular o2jam private servers. I think there's like over 1000 unique maps in those links (io2pf has 681 on it's own).
Bobbias
If you want some o2jam conversions to play in mania I made a thread with links to a number of different collections. My mediafire has ~6-7gb of conversions.

t/148658

I'd guess I probably have ~1400-1500 conversions here as a very rough guess. There are a lot of shitty charts mixed in because I basically collected every o2jam chart I could find. I have ALL o2pf charts (including old ones no longer in use and ones that have been considered for adding but haven't actually been added), otakujam and a few other server's collections as well. I also have many charts I collected from random places across the internet.

So yeah, if you look, there are a LOT of maps for mania:

It's not necessary to play other games to get good, but it certainly doesn't hurt either. However, everyone learns at their own pace. I've been playing mania style games (Stepmania, O2jam, etc.) for more than a decade now, and am still nowhere near the top tier players. Meanwhile, Jxyden started playing mania here a while ago with no prior rhythm game experience and is already way better than me.

I tried o!m initially just to see what it was like and I wasn't exactly thrilled with how poor I was doing. Then a friend got me to try DJMAX Trilogy and I spent a while playing offline and practicing songs until I could at least do MX level on all keys except 8k (just doesn't work for me, orz) and I came back here later to actively dedicate myself to playing and improving on here as well.

I think anyone here who's seriously good has spent more time playing other VSRGs instead of o!m, but despite t/224534 showing just how wonky the mechanics are, o!m is still a pretty decent mode for a game where the major focus is on the standard mode than anything else. It's good for practice just as any other VSRG is.

The thing with other vsrg is that songs/skins and whatever is so obliviously hard to find. (LR2 for example, mainskin just doesn't do it for me.) Which is why I use mania as my main game. As for o2jam I don't even know what private server to play on and such, I used to play on Angel Jam but that one seems to be dead.
Thing O Doom
How does one even setup, get maps for, and play lr2?
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gXn ... IqRsU/edit

this an alright guide?
What maps would people here recommend?
Pinecone
Personally I don't like that guide because there's no tutorial on how to navigate the main LR2 website, no information about stairway, concept of a fullcombo overriding a hard clear... etc

Maybe read this guide with that one as well http://pastebin.com/DPD1U8TZ.

EDIT: making my own guide....

Mania is my first rythm game, and I know I will not improve if I don't try other rythm games. I know I have to play more to get better, but there s not enough map for that.

Do you have any idea how many people here play unranked maps because the majority of the ranked maps aren't hard enough or have enough variety in them to be worth anything other than being an easy 8 pp
projectc1
they're a lot of ppl who become so pro enough (maybe anyone knows that) by playing only osu!mania

you just need practice by playing a lot of pending / graveyard / any other games conversion (full list link convert by Davteezy) or maybe playing that similar like osu!mania like o2jam, LR2, stepmania to get the "feeling"

and last words : don't ever give up. do not ever complain when your skill are on slump, and practice until you tired enough...

RIP my english was so bad ugh...

Great link! I'm pretty sure if you downloaded every map from every one of those links you'd have more than 10k diffs of mania maps. Before I got my new laptop I had just under 10k mania diffs total (including ranked mania maps), and there are MANY more songs available if you check every single collection there.
