2880x1800 totally works.
Use any random software on the internet to set resolution of OS X to 2880x1800 (like SetResX per example).
Launch osu, set reso to 2880x1800.
Quit osu.
Make you mac go back to 1440x900 (with the system settings this time, quite and possbily delete setresx)
Relaunch osu
It should still be beautifully retina-like.

Or at least it worked here.

For osu on OS X, give up on no-bugs for now. Somewhen they'll come up with a native client. until then we have to deal with wine
Yes that works, but I want to have it that way without changing the rest of my desktop, only the app. I guess i'll have to wait then.

When i attempt to open Osu the icon just bounces on the dock once, the light comes up, and then Osu closes right away. What do i do???? :'(
this is happening to me too. Osu! will no longer open. It simply lights up on the doc and then closes automatically. I tried deleting and reinstalling or updating the wrapper and refreshing wrapper or changing the check off of xquartz instead of osu but none of these things have worked. It will not open at all.

I had the same problem a week ago. I used my backup from time machine and loaded the older version that worked the day before. Solved the problem.
Nines
A few days ago, I spent two days, testing out every Wine engine for osu! using Wineskin Winery and the Wineskin app inside the osu package. I noticed that WS8 engines DO NOT work with osu, but the newer WS9 engines do. As I experimented, there were 3 different kinds of results that I came across.

Result 1)
-The engine caused osu! to use a really small, fine looking font.
-Osu would NOT run smoothly. Every 5-10 seconds in game, the frame rate would drop to 15-20fps (lasting for around 3 seconds)
-Osu would NOT run fullscreen automatically, but would stay borderless as the setting is in Options. (status bar still visible)
-Small cursor lag

Result 2)
-Engine causes osu to use Arial
-Runs smoothly, no frame rate lag
-Osu runs fullscreen even if its only set to borderless.
-No cursor lag
-Keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys (excluding function keys and esc) DO NOT work.
-Offset is TERRIBLY off.

Result 3)
-Osu does not open. Wine gives you a windows error saying that an unexpected problem has occured.

I went back to the old package of osu and noticed that it didn't use any such engine, but instead a custom built engine called InfinityRaw. How can I use a custom engine (such as InfinityRaw) that won't do things like crash (forcing me Cmd+Q), but won't make me compromise hotkeys, a perfect offset, etc.?
Love Kushieda
I opened my Osu this morning and it said at the bottom to update the client (by clicking the rotating arrows) and so I did. Immediately after updating the wineskin/Osu crashed and I have been unable to open it since. When I attempt to open the client I get 3 error reports, 2 from wineskin and 1 from Osu stating that a serious error has occurred preventing the application from opening. I have tried all the various things like updating my wineskin engine to the newest, updating the wrapper for my Osu client, etc. but none of these have helped. Has anyone else had this problem or have a solution to it? Thanks.

I've been having the same problems under wine on Linux (Ubuntu 12.04). My best guess is that is has something to do with the added graphics effect of snow falling. Reinstalling wine and osu! did nothing.
Vertify
Aye - I can no longer open the osu! either.

Mine shows the same message but it just opens normally about 30 seconds later.

Hamster Only
Alright so I got the message "The program winemenubuilder.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close" right after attempting to open osu and it crashed after the patch. This is what I did to fix it.

I downloaded the osu installer from the website and let it install another new osu client in a different file than the one containing my original osu client. I updated the new one. Then I copy and paste my song, skins, and configuration file over to the new client (replacing the new ones). I deleted the old client. The new one works. The same message "The program winemenubuilder.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close" still shows up but the client launch afterwards after closing the message and everything seems to be working fine.

So this method works but you will still get that same message every time you launch osu. A bit annoying but better than nothing.
Vertify
^ I did what hamster did. I can clarify it works and indeed that same message just pops up. But nonetheless, it works fine. Actually better than my previous version - it doesn't crash on me anymore.
mockingod
By downloading the installer, do you mean downloading the Mac OSX 'installer' and just opening up the .app file? Whenever I try to just open the .app file, it just closes immediately after. When I tried my normal fix for this which is to go into the package contents and open wineskin.exe then click on "test run", it closes immediately after as well.

Unless you are talking about installing the installer.exe for windows then running that through wineskin, in which case I do not know how to do either.
Hamster Only
Yeah it's the one from the Download page. Then install the new osu client (.app) in a different file than the one containing your original osu client. Update it. Move files over to the new one from the old one and it should work.

Edit: Don't open the .app directly from the installer. Move it to a different file than the one containing your original osu client then open it to update it.

Edit2: Also when I say move the files over, I meant copy it then paste to the new client. If you try to move it over, you are making a shortcut and that won't work. Copy paste them.
Vertify
Download the OS X beta installer - http://m2.ppy.sh/osu!.20130922.dmg

Open the .dmg file and run the Osu app.
To insert the previous songs you already had (as well as skins), Show Package Contents on your old Osu and just replace the 'Song' and 'Skin' folder of the osu you just downloaded.

EDIT: Ninja'd by hamster
mockingod
I move the .app file out of the disk image file and it doesn't open either way.

It pops up on the dock for one second after opening it, then it just disappears. I had that bug with my old .app occasionally, but my fix that I mentioned always worked for me. Now it isn't helping at all.
Hamster Only
Do you even get the same message that I did?
mockingod
No. Nothing appears at all. Just bounces once in the dock then closes.

Before I updated my last one, it opened fine. After I updated it, by clicking the button in game, it gave me an error that was shown in a picture about 8 posts ago. Nothing appears when I redownloaded the new installer though

I got the same message as you and i tried downloading a new client and putting it in a different file but it still does not work. Also what do you mean by (.app)?
mockingod
Last patch worked 100% fine. I can't play Osu now because the last backup of Osu.app I have on my flash drive is far too outdated and automatically updates when I try to run it. ;A

I might try update my Mac to mavericks if both hamstercurry and vertify are running mavericks. Right now I'm on 10.8.6 or so.

I am having a lot of problems with the mac version of OSU! For instance, when I click the OSU! logo thing to open it it takes like 5 minutes to load and it isn't my first time opening it. Does anyone have the same problem or have a solution?
(I am currently running Mavericks on my Mac. My mac is a Macbook Air 11 inch.)

Thank you :D
Ichance23
i just reinstalled the osu! from scratch and then refreshed the wrapper and then updated it. it is now working at least for now! i started this game to get better at aiming in fps games but i have quit fps but i still love osu! lol.
Termiinal
Whenever I attempt to make Osu! fullscreen it immediately goes black and crashes.
mockingod
I've tried pretty much everything I could.

I installed Mavericks and it still doesn't open. I refresh the wrapper and it still doesn't open; it just bounces in the dock then closes.

These are the errors I get from the test log. If anyone can help me debug it, I would be extremely grateful.

I'm having the same problem, can't open, it just bounces in dock once. In activity monitor there are several osu wine processes open with one osu wine server open, if I kill the server it kills off all the other ones. Just something i remarked.
peppy help! :(

I was having difficulties on my desktop with osu, it wouldn't run. There were two processes in Activity monitor running, but it would never produce the game. I just deleted Razer Synapse and that did the trick! Now, I would like to be able to control my dpi as well as my macros; is there a way for I to have both osu and Razer?

Oh my god. Thank you so much! Osu finally works after deleting Razer Synapse :D I was playing on Windows for the past like 3 months...
Tupples
Oh god, I'm so stupid. I had to do this a while ago because it wasn't running. What I did is downloaded an old version of Synapse.
My mouse started acting weirdly, so I needed to reinstall, that put it on the latest version. So the problem came back! I'm sooooo happy someone mentioned it, thanks <3

Yes there is a way! You need to download Synapse version 1.16 or less, I believe. I'm not sure at which version it starts causing the problem (the latest version is 1.18) so if 1.16 doesn't work, download 1.15 instead.

EDIT: Apparently 1.16 doesn't work either. I downloaded 1.12, and osu! opened fine. However the old versions fuck with my mouse and makes it act weirdly (the reason I had updated it in the first place). So basically I'm fucked. I can't use the legacy drivers either because I can't set my mouse to 1200 dpi with it.
mockingod
hmmm.... I will try deleting Razer Synapse on my computer later. I'd rather play Osu on my portable laptop with Inklet than games that I actually need to use my mouse on.
Asphod
Since the last patch I have quite some problems with osu!
Doesn't want to start
Make my computer reboot/crash

Before, it was all okay :(
Hope you'll fix it rapidly!
mockingod
Deleting Razer Synapse seems to have worked. It'll bounce in the dock for a second, then disappear, but then the message that says winebuildersomething.exe has become unresponsive, then a few seconds after, Osu! will open.

However, I find that it is kind of lagging a little more than it usually has. It may just be me, because I haven't played in half a week, but I can notice the visual lag that I've never had.

It's still definitely playable, though.
mikunegi01
It opens up fairly quickly, but I can't seem to click on "New version of osu! is avaiable."

It asks me to log in, and then tells me that I can't play online because my osu isn't updated (although at the bottom right corner it says that it's up-to-date). So I try to click on the "new version is available" at the bottom center of the screen, and it won't let me click on it. :o

Does anyone else have this issue, and how can this be resolved? :o

What hotkeys don't work for you? If you are talking about F1, F2, etc. to pick mods or random, then you must press "fn" (which should be to the left of control on the bottom left of your keyboard), while you press the F# keys. Or you can set in system preferences to make it be the other way around, where you have to press "fn" and F# to make your screen brighter/darker etc.

I had this same error if you were reading the past pages. The suggestion of deleting Razer Syanpse helped me greatly. If you have Razer Synapse, I suggest deleting it from your computer. If you use a Razer mouse to play, maybe downloading a previous version of Razer Synapse will work, but I use my trackpad + Inklet to play rather than my mouse, so I never looked if installing a previous version of Razer Synapse worked.

This has been a problem ever since i started using the new package. Keys such as Q, W, E, A, S, D, F, G, Z, X, C, and V don't work when using them to shortcut selecting mods. Also, number keys don't work to shortcut in menu's (take the beatmap options menu for example) by pressing 1, 2, 3, etc. to select an option.
In the editor, using the space bar, using Q, W, and/or E to quick select whistle, finish, and clap, and other such features do not work either.

In a recent update, something broke the old osu package (the one running on the custom InfinityRaw engine, unlike the current one which runs a basic Wine-provided engine) causing it to always open up the same two errors. First being an error saying that something serious has occured with winemenubuilder.exe, then another that says osu has encountered a problem and needs to close.

After months of not finding time to fix the remaining problems with the OS X build of osu!, I have decided to make it public in its current state. You may have issues importing songs, but this can usually be fixed by mashing escape or alt-f4.

Please note this is a test release (beta if you like) and there are known bugs. That said, feel free to share your experiences in this thread and try and help each other out until the bugs are ironed out :).

http://m1.ppy.sh/osu!.20130922.dmg
http://m2.ppy.sh/osu!.20130922.dmg

Compatible with OS X 10.6~10.9.x

Things to know:
  1. The first time you run osu!, it may take up to 5 minutes to start. This is due to X11 (the graphical subsystem) rebuilding a font cache.
  2. This build will always start the updater when you run it. It will update to newer releases and therefore when the remaining issues are fixed you will automatically receive the fixes.
  3. Importing songs may get stuck. If this happens, try alt-f4 or esc mashing, or quit osu! and run it again.
  4. To see the osu! folder, right-click on osu!.app and choose "Show Package Contents" then navigate to Contents/Resources/winePrefix/drive_c/osu/
  5. Apparently you can load new songs by dragging the .osz file to the osu! icon.
Adding Beatmaps:

Open the package:

Navigate to the songs folder:

Drag your osz files inside:

Run osu! and goto song selection (or hit F5 if you are already there).

Note that you can make a shortcut to the songs folder on your desktop by dragging the folder while holding command and option. This should make it easier to load new maps for now!

Mine is a Macbook. Osu ran fine on it when it was 10.8.6, but I updated to Mavericks 10.9.

It was crashing in a recent update due to Razer Synapse being on the computer (When my computer was both 10.8.6 AND 10.9. My computer itself never crashed though, only osu.app

Is there a way to allow more languages into osu? Only the boxes below have been shown instead of the characters. I've had this problem since I started about 5 months ago. English is my primary language but it feels weird to not be able to see the other languages.

Also, is there a way to allocate more CPU or RAM to osu?

I had this same error if you were reading the past pages. The suggestion of deleting Razer Syanpse helped me greatly. If you have Razer Synapse, I suggest deleting it from your computer. If you use a Razer mouse to play, maybe downloading a previous version of Razer Synapse will work, but I use my trackpad + Inklet to play rather than my mouse, so I never looked if installing a previous version of Razer Synapse worked.[/quote]

Someone has already come up with a fix for Razer Synapse interfering with osu!. Just find the .dmg for the Razer Synapse 1.12 update and install that instead of the newest update which is 1.18. I can use Synapse just fine.

There isn't a way to do that. Your best hope in being able to run osu better than running it now would be to take the basic steps of making sure osu! is the only application running. Don't download anything while playing because that takes up memory, which can slow down other processes.
Nines
I have a pseudo-fix for hotkeys (Q,W,E,1,2,Spacebar,etc.). All you need to do is change the engine of osu!.

Warning! This is only recommended for tablet players and mappers. Personally, I wouldn't even recommend this for playing because of the slight cursor lag compared to the Wine engine 1.7.8.

First, go to Spotlight search and type in Wineskin Winery. Open Wineskin Winery and click on the small plus icon.

Scroll down until you find the "WS9WineCX12.1.2" OR "WS9WineCX12.1.2AMDSpeedHack" (both worked for me).
Download and install it.

Go into the package contents of osu! by right clicking the osu!.app and click Show Package Contents.

Open the Wineskin app.

When prompted, click on Advanced, then under Wrapper tools, click on Change Engine Used and find the engine you just downloaded.

It'll go through a little process to change the engine, so don't open osu! while it's doing this. It will finish and return to the Advanced option window.

Just repeat the steps to go back to the old engine (which i believe is WS9Wine1.7.2. You can download the latest version, 1.7.8, from Wineskin Winery if you like), but instead click on the other engine to switch over.

I'm having problems..... Soo when I'm playing OSU, the app would automatically freeze mid game and I would have to exit out. I have another question again..... Is it possible to download osu skins for mac?
mockingod
Yes. You install it by opening up the package contents of Osu.app then navigating to the skins folder.

Find drive_c in one of the folders, then open the folder named osu, then skins should be there. If you still have trouble, I believe you can zip the file up, and rename the extension to osk then just drag it to your osu! game window.

how do I unzip the dmg file? Also I used to have issues when my OSU app kept freezing and I would have to force quit the application. After a while, whenever I would click on the OSU app to open up the game it won't open. It would show in the dock that it's opening then automatically close out. I would click the app multiple times but it would still do the same. I also downloaded wineskin and I tried merging the installer with the wineskin application (OSU application) and it gave me an error open. Also, when I download the .exe file and when I try to extract it, it won't work. Could someone please show me how to download OSU and stop the freezing issues when I play OSU?
mockingod
I don't know about the freezing issues, but:

1. You don't unzip dmg files. You can open them normally like folders. They are disk image files which usually all applications on mac that are downloaded appear as. (I don't know why they don't use zip, but I don't really care for the technical side of things)

2. If you can't open it at all, then delete Razer Synapse off your computer. We told you in a previous post to, but you didn't reply back. Razer Synapse 2.0 is the cause of the crashing at startup. If you want to use your razer mouse still on your mac, then you will have to install a previous version, Synapse 1.2 or something. I haven't had the need to install it because the default movement speed with acceleration disabled is fine for me. (I don't use the mouse much anyways)

Did you force quit Osu? Or did you leave it like that still? (to force quit an application just hold Command+Alt+Esc and select from the window)

I recently downloaded a high definition skin which made loading beatmaps really long and sometimes crashed into a black screen too... are you using any complicated skin?
Vertify
^ This is common. Anyone crashing/freezing - check if you're computer can handle it (your skin that is).

Forcequit is your best friend guys. I've used it so many times I've lost count lol - not complaining; bugs will always be here and there.

Thanks for the help. Sorry that I didn't see your other post before. I have deleted Razer Synapse and OSU has started to run smoother. I get up to 300+ FPS and the game doesn't freeze automatically anymore.

Hm. Maybe try deleting the old Razer Synapse too?

I don't know how long you are waiting when opening Osu!, but if you just started up your computer, try waiting at least 3 minutes for it to open.

Thanks, no snaking sliders made it lag a lot less, but it still lags. I use the DirectX renderer.
