At least most val0108 maps don't use ridiculous ar10. (yeah, I can't read it yet <.<)

On topic though: I think playing too hard maps is really fun and rewarding, if you know what's going on and don't spam your x/z mindlessly. You'll probably learn the most when you play maps you get 70-85% on. (In NF, most likely)
As some others stated, your accuracy will not improve really fast, and neither will you get rid of your nervousness before SSing a song. But it's not like you'll be hopeless. Recently, my accuracy magically improved to the point where I got A/S-Ranks (~95%) on quite a few insanes without ever practicing it specifically.

On a side note, if you're alternating (with your fingers while playing), I'd recommend playing high bpm maps since it's almost the only way to challenge your fingers and make them faster. They won't get hurt so easily, neither.

In the end, however, it's all your choice. Do whatever is fun for you, and not what's fun for me.

the only way to get a high rank with dt hd hard is to get in the top 5 lol, stop acting like it's not an achievement

Just play whatever you want.

BTW, don't stop tackling things that go above your skill level, and specially:
SPOILER
"Play things that you like the most. Go again to those maps you couldn't FC way before, and tell them 'Who's Boss'."

Note: Edited for fixing format. Sorry~

This.

Maps for me are fun as long as I can read them, regardless of their difficulty. I use to play maps that I can't pass only because they are fun to read and play, (e. g. some val0108 maps or Renard maps). Slowly I can get better results and eventually I pass them, and only improving in them makes me feel good so...

Maybe is not that bad to play songs that you can't pass. Another thing is trying to play maps you can't read.

As many have said, if you can't read it don't play it. However, it is that much more satisfying when you go back to a hard song that stumped you in your starting days, and ace it.

how would you read higher ars then?

sometimes to improve you need to throw yourself in the water

My friend and i each have about 11k plays. Ive been all about only playing songs i can barely pass while he on the other hand practices maps way out of his league where he fails in the first 10 sec. The end result when we play together every night is that i beat him in every map but if we do a map out of our league like air man he can get a higher accuracy than me like 64 percent to my 60. Also he can do streams faster than I can. He is unable to get anything higher than 95 acc on any insane map and he has difficulty in keeping note streaks past 150.

On a side note he can actually read ar 11 well since he practices it so much. He just cant do it.

So in summary, dont skip learning the fundamentals

ar11 takes such a long time to read, and so disappointing because it's a near-worthless skill

That's just your friend, I can play maps way out of my league and fail them all the time over and over, but if I play a hard / normal one with doubletime I get S / SS

Yeah i was gonna ask how you go from AR9 which i can perfectly read to AR10 which i go from 98% acc with ar9 to 65% and often fail with ar10, same map just edited diff settings.

Maybe the best way is to simply train and only play AR 10 for a week or two.

definitely a bad idea.
if ar9 feels fast for you, then as you keep playing it, it will gradually seem slower than it is and that's a good starting point on when to learn how to play ar10

many players that jumped straight to ar10 without even playing anything lower generally can't read anything below ar10

You could also try playing ARs that are between AR9 and 10.

yep

dt hards/easy insanes is nice because they tend to be ar8 (about ar9.7 with dt) and their difficulty isn't so high either.
Mikelicious
Yes, i do it all the time, specially maps AR10/10.3, even if its almost impossible for me yet im getting better reading them and my reaction is way better than before imo, ofc i play maps i can do as well, wont be funny fail all the time orz

I think everyone develops their skill in the game way differently. Personally, I've always played songs that are too hard for me on multiplayer due to a close friend of mine being a higher level, and I've always felt like it's helped. Maybe not spamming just those songs, but playing them every now and then has definitely helped my reaction time.

I'd suggest just playing a variety. And don't let not liking the song stop you from playing a good map, because you could grow to like the song by just playing the beatmap.
Soarezi
lol what i wish i could READ ar11 too.
RadicalFuzz
I think time in the game itself is going to make you better regardless of song choice (within reason, if you can check your text messages while playing the map's probably too slow for you) For example, I've noticed that I improve faster when I'm working towards getting a specific rank on a difficult map I'm having trouble with as opposed to playing a map I like but isn't particularly challenging. Either way though, I'm still getting better. Luckily, with most maps there are several difficulty levels so you can work your way up. From your video, there were two easier versions of the map which you could've played. They let you get a feel for how the mapper interpreted the song (assuming it's the same mapper) and can be good stepping stones. And when you do get to the harder difficulties that you know you couldn't beat before, getting good ranks on them is insanely rewarding.

U only have 5500 or so plays at level 55. He is same level as you but with over 13000 plays :P u dont play anywhere near as many maps as he does out of his league

I've only been playing for a month so far and I see where you are coming g from, playing song with higher note density is more fun and seems more rhythmic, but my acc went down and that's annoying. I say don't retry maps that are way above your skill level or it will result in you overreading easier maps (what I struggle with) and spamming keys for triplets and streams. Just play a difficulty you are ok with infill you can get constant A or S then go up and practise that, and if it's too hard go no fail untill you can pass it.
